Was a reasonable crowd there considering it was midweek and at 5-30pm. I'm hopeless at guessing and was seated right at the front so didn't get to see much of the crowd. At a guess, I would say around 200 maybe?

Closer to 90 at my count.

Right you are. That team had a number of All Whites plus the like of Totori and Ifill and yet got soundly beaten by YHM.

I would have given you kudos has you stopped before you said Totori and Ifill. Considering its Ifills first 30mins back from surgery and Totori should be playing for YHM....

it also needs to be noted that this si in effect a training macth for the nix lads, it's being used to get injured players match fit, the youth guys some game time and getting out of form players a chance to prove themselves. hardly a fair representation of the best nix lineup.

Still a professional setup and good players fighting for their place in the team.

Vs

a bunch of guys from Palmerston North who train twice a week if that

Yes a Bad loss. But still hardly representative of anything that alireggae suggested.

Side note: I'm not giving an opinion on that, so no twisting my words or putting them in my mouth.

Allegedly

I suppose if you want to specualte, you could say that YHM winning means they should be playing in the a-league - it's unlikely anyone would agree with you - including I expect their coach - unless he is a complete madman.

Until the nix have a competitive league for their 'b' side to play in none of the midweek gmaes mean anything. They are simply a training game and I'm pretty sure that's how guys like Ifill, Totori, Smith and all the other players returning to fitness see it.

C-Diddy, who was Gouldy's assistant tonight? [not the fit looking physio either].

I thought that only Boxhall and Totori looked to be higher than NZFC level on that performance tonight. Solomons looks a good young player. Hogg didn't particularly stand out for the half he played.

Several in the HBU side looked better than the A guys. Lucas [2 goals], O'Neill had a blinder, Peverley was never troubled, the Pommie boys; Hoyle, Tinnion and Hindmarsh also went well.

Well, hard to say. It must be hard to pick only half a dozen out of the whole country, there's bound to be better players out there overlooked or not rated. Of those names I mentioned, only Fergus Neill is academy type age and he might be a little older than I think, and Lucas. The other guys are mid twenties and above.

Agreed Boxall and Totori looked several classes above NZFC.

Also agree that Solomons is one for the future! Was solid enough under pressure and is good in the air. Also think Doyle had a few nice touches. Apart from that maybe Justin Gully at right back was the only other player for Wellington to impress me somewhat.

Lucas looked good for his goals but didn't really bother Boxall and Solomons too much.

Not sure who the assistant was. Where were you standing Wayne?

And couldn't the Nix spend a little bit of money to put numbers on their shirts? These are meant to be the stars of the future and we can't tell who they bloody are!!!!

They did have numbers on the front, but they were too bloody tiny to read! I thought Hawke's Bay looked pretty good today, particularly after the second half changes took place and the Phoenix seemed to fall apart a wee bit. Was pretty frustrated with Totori by the time he was subbed - although he was playing well at the start (including the cross for the opener), he soon resumed his usual brief of run at the opposition, fall over, and lose the ball. In all honesty, noone playing for the 'Nix really stood out to me as having good or bad games, the whole game was a bit 'meh'. I still wonder how Lucas is only playing in the ASB Premiership.

Cause he is a head case. Ask him about smacking a ref. Ask him about trying to go 1 v 1 with Manny. Reputation is that he is a complete cock.

Was it Caleb or Shane's son? Caleb wasn't good enough for Sydney's NYL team and was just a squad player for a VPL team, but think Shane's boy has appeared for the Nix reserves previously.

Alex Rufer, yes looked ok, would probably fit into an NZFC team, the likes of an Otago, Manawatu or Waikato.

You think they place  much importance on winning?   I'm only going on this game but its on par with a normal NZFC game in terms of intensity. It certainly gave [edit] Totori and Boxall a good workout and probably helped Hogg get up to speed too.

My source said Caleb but my source is shit.

Alex has been playing for Youngheart.  Very young.

Am I right that a couple were offered a spot and turned it down? If so, how are they going?

We've ranted and railed about this in the media and on the Podcast this week.

The club needs to find the money for a proper media person to 'control the narrative' on the Phoenix and build the relationships needed to get the club decent coverage.

Russell has been a fantastic journalist over the years but he's packed it in to be kit man and he's been pushed into the media role.  The job needs more than a part time person releasing news once every couple of days with no real story generated.

This weekend is the 150th game.  Imagine if that was being talked up and was the focus meaning Gareth could get on murdering moggies and swanning around China instead of being the entire story and frontman for the Phoenix.  Lots of stories about Heskey to get the EPL snobs along, talk about the 150th, better control of social media, some decent offers about the birthday party this weekend and a chance to positively put the weekend debacle behind us.

Instead we've had some late adshels, the media story all about comments from gareth that have done nothing but alienate supporters and not a thing about the game this weekend that will make a significant positive difference to the crowds.

Nope.  I couldn't work for the Phoenix.  I enjoy being in the stands jumping around and (occassionally) being drunk to much to chose to work on matchdays.
