The Sydney deal is put together through a retailer Bing Lee, rather than direct through Sony Aus. Also the away only sponsorship would be quite a bit less than full sponsorship.
As an aside I believe Sony NZ would have loved to have continued sponsoring the club but with billion dollar losses and redundancies the company HQ wasn't going to be seen renewing a sponsorship.

Exactly. I really don't hold too much of a grudge against them tbh. Recession and all.

I guess it would also help get sponsors, if TV channels gave the A-League some better coverage.

Smitty, this is something I've been thinking for a while too but couldn't see the buy-in for Weta... but what about this?
Weta is a group of companies with, as I understand it, Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor and other key film-making legends involved.
If the Weta Group would be principal sponsor to the Nix for say 1+2 years and, on the Nix's behalf, approach the major film companies' working on big productions with them over those years for contributions.
e.g. The Lovely Bones Dreamworks
Avatar 20th Century Fox
The Adventures of Tintin Dreamworks
Dambusters Universal/StudioCanal
The Hobbit 1 & 2 (Warners/New Line?)/MGM
to name the major ones we've seen publicised.
Why would they bother? What's in it for them?
The Nix shirt logo would read "Weta Digital..wots next?" or similar....
with url beneath to a link of latest updates for those movies, merchandise and special deals available only to those using this link.
That shirt url could be especially powerful when reinforced with on-field electronic and/or hoarding advertising for each game...=2 hours of captive sky and fox coverage most weeks through the A-League Season...
+ australian and nz national sports news coverage, highlights packages to ESPN, asian affiliates and europe etc---all embedded in the programme content.
Contrast that exposure with the cost of an equivalent ad-buy across all of those markets.. where the majority of viewers with mysky, tivo and equivalent set top boxes will fast-forward or delete ad segments( or make a cuppa) anyway!
I don't know how the film industry works or if this is feasible.
The key is, Peter Jackson and Co. started from small beginnings here in Wellington and battled the giants of the film industry and isolation to become the film industry force they are today.
In much the same way, the Wellington Phoenix have started from small beginnings and aspire to be a force in the A-League.. and beyond, in time to come.
A mutually-beneficial helping hand from a fellow Wellington company with clout could certainly keep the (foot)ball rolling.

I think I'm right in remembering that either Atletico Madrid or Bilbao in La Liga had something like this a few years back, it was a deal where they were sponsored by a film studio or distribution company and so across the season had the names of various films as the sponsor on their shirt.
Just looked it up - from 2003-05 Atletico Madrid were sponsored by Columbia Pictures and the following films were featured on their shirt:
"Bewitched (movie), Hollywood Homicide, S.W.A.T. (movie), Hellboy (film), Spanglish (film), Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse, Hitch (movie), XXX (movie) and the aforementioned Spider-Man 2"
- http://www.gfdb.com/Club.50.Atletico-Madrid.aspx (scroll to the bottom).
An interesting idea, but I don't know how well it would work in the A-League. I guess La Liga gets more exposure, but you never know.

Actually, I'd say there's a few Wellington Phoenix supporters with Weta connections who read these forums and if they want to pass it on to the powers-that-be ...good for them!
If Weta were to contact Tony and sound out the possibilities that would be excellent too.
Any actual pitch would need to come from Terry, Tony and Phoenix marketing dept I guess, if they thought the idea had any merit.

Aussie tourism is hugely important to us.. note in the article NZ govt has provided $2.5 million additional funding for Australian promotional work...hmmm!

it, awesome idea.
Combine them.
Some of those upcoming movies..maybe all of them... will feature Weta footage of NZ scenery and panoramas. As each movie is rolled out TourismNZ could work with Weta on "100% Pure NZ" promos launched in conjunction with each movie launch.
The Nix shirt sponsorship might have the url
www.purenz.com/weta
or similar and thats it, reinforced by electronic or hoarding adverts opposite main camera positions at every one of the Nixs games.

I have to ask the question though would tourism NZ want to be associated with the Phoenix brand? When the phoenix have a shocker, then the headlines like "100% pure useless" for similar crop up, you would bring negative publicity to their brand.
"Ive just re-visited this and once again realised that C-Diddy is a genius - a drunk, Newcastle bred disgrace - but a genius." - Hard News, 11:39am 4th June 2009

I'd love to say that won't be a problem this season Ubergunner

but who knows..I'd like to think the Nix are up for it this season.
The Nix are the only NZ based team in the Australian HAL...Australia is TourismNZ's biggest market by far.
I may be wrong, but whether you win or lose may not really matter to. The sheer fact that the brand is out there, traffic is being generated and driven through the website and sales made may be enough...Any publicity is good publicity in effect.
Remember the key exposure point is the brand is seen during the game for at least 1 and 1/2 hours each game, plus available in NZ and Aussie sports news bulletins and additionally to asian, european and us affiliates too.

Fair question, Sebsational. What would be in it for Weta?
Weta are essentially a corporate entity employing hundreds of people and receiving visits from many corporate guests in the course of filming and production. Entertaining staff and visitors is an important part of their business too..and the Nix is in the entertainment business.Properly structured corporate packages could be part of the deal.
The key though is guaranteed almost weekly tv exposure through the season, on the Nix shirts potentially reinforced by surrounding advertising.
Weta could offer that as exposure to their film production clients who would pass it on to distribution/ marketers of the movies.
I'm not a film person. There may be good reasons why this can't happen ..but being untroubled by whats not possible I'm just putting it out there!
Those that do know what's what may be able to make it work for the good of the Nix and ultimately for everyone's benefit.

Everyone in the film industry already knows who WETA is (almost everyone in NZ knows who they are). Advertising isn't something that Visual Effects and Animation studios need to do (to the general public). Films either want to use certain companies or companies may have to pitch for them.
ILM, only needs people to have seen Transformers, Iron Man, Jurassic Park (well any movie with amazing effects) to get jobs. Weta everyone knows is associated with King Kong, LOTR...and Animal Logic have 300, house of flying daggers.... You get what I mean though, no need for Public awareness, just industry links.
Movie advertising rights would go through film studios i.e. Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Warner Brothers.

Oi! this was my idea!
It's not so much about WETA getting advertising it's about WETA supporting Wellington, Something Peter Jackson has been keen to do in the past.
Think Elton John and Watford, he hardly did it for the advertising did he?
ForteanTimes2009-07-22 08:57:29

That's a great idea! How do we go about it?
You know I don't always make serious suggestions you know?
ForteanTimes2009-07-22 09:14:46

It would be more out of generosity than huge business benefit they would choose to be involved with Wellington Phoenix.
Of course the Nix would recognise that generosity in an appropriate way.
