Phoenix to move to Auckland (maybe)

WTF??? Is there any truth in this and if so why?

Captain Andrew Durante was initially happy to talk about yesterday's report in The Dominion Post in which Wellington city councillor John Morrison claimed New Zealand Football was working behind the scenes to move the Phoenix to Auckland.

But Durante was then told by club officials to keep his mouth shut.

After reading the draw for the A League last night. I note that there only 2 games to be confirmed (TBC), with all other games set down for Wellington.
So my question is, and the answer so I can understand it, just exactly when is the Phoenix supposed to be shifting to Auckland? (Smartarse answers will be ignored)
Sorry I just don't get this shifting stuff now!!! Somewhat confused!!!!???

The media ban initially made me more nervous. Then I realised it doesn't really mean anything, and we still don't know anything. So I got over it.

I guess ultimately it's an issue for another season. Draw is out and they are based in Wellington.

Sam - you must be an understudy to Burgess. Tacky "journalism" from you this morning.

Unfortunately really par for the course these days. Very glad I don't pay your wages - you don't do much to justify whatever you are on.

I agree with Junior. Shoddy journalism by a rubbish publication that seems to be getting worse over time.

Oh wait, I forgot. The worlds greatest rugby player Sonny Bill Williams is also the worlds greatest boxer.  That's a good news story!

Seems fair enough to me. If I was the club I wouldn't be talking to the Dom Post right now either.

Even the way the story above has been worded shows why the Phoenix are right to be cautious. "Durante told by club officials to keep his mouth shut", oh the drama! How about this version instead:

Captain Andrew Durante was initially happy to talk about yesterday's report until he was reminded by club officials that the Dom Post is likely to mis-quote whatever he says, cut and paste his comments together with a few random quotes from the Yellow Fever website to ensure everybody gets taken out of context, and also publish it all alongside a two-year old photo of him looking disgusted.

If the Dom Post wants people to talk to them they should try doing some actual reporting instead of acting like a tabloid.

Just wait - I bet by the weekend they publish another "opinion" piece like this one complaining about their treatment by the club and promising to report on the Phoenix "without fear or favour". Yeah right.

I think the media ban on the players was a great idea. Why get the players involved in fuelling baseless speculation, it achieves nothing.

And anyway, that's what these forums are for!

THIS!!!

By the way, if someone from the Hawkes Bay Today is reading...

I just stubbed my toe whilst putting out the washing. Looks like it might get infected. I think I might wait until its festering before going to a local hospital to get it looked at. We can then conjure up a story together about how the hospital system is "putting patient lives at risk" by being understaffed!

You interested? I'll pose for a rather emotional looking photo to make the story all the more believable...

A question. Do you think Burgess and/or the DoomPost bosses actually want the Nix out of Wellington?

Given the fact that they just make up stories anyway would they actually require anything  actually newsworthy to write about?

Of course not, then they wouldn't have something to complain about! (But brag about when it does well)

Exactly, it stops the players accidentally giving the 'media' another angle to continue this non-story for another few days.

Slapping a media ban on the players gives them another angle to continue the story. I really doubt the players know much about this and I generally don't like players being muzzled.

It gives them one story. Rather than multiple players saying multiple things that can be taken out of context.

Getting?

There was one interesting quote in it though

"But if he [Terry] did run into big problems one would like to think we could step up to the plate," Mr Morrison said. "It's about making sure the Phoenix stays in Wellington, stays healthy and stays strong."

Is he suggesting the WCC would be prepared to take over the Phoenix?

How many days until "Peter Jackson rules out Phoenix deal"? "They released Toto and I don't want anything to do with a club that discriminates against hobbits..."

I've just been so busy.......from predictions to poetry and now sub-editing. I predict the following in the next few editions of the Dom;

"Messi in talks with Phoenix".
(Next day, "Messi says he knows nothing about upcoming Phoenix deal")

"Ferguson new manager as Herbert leaves Phoenix"
(Next day, "Herbert: Ya Wot?")

"Rockefeller to buy Phoenix"
(Next day, "Terry says: shut up")

"New keeper at Phoenix, Gordon Banks is signed"
(Next day, "Terry says: I've already told you once")

"Elvis seen delivering crosses to Paul Ifill"
(Next day, "Terry says: are you delusional?")

"We meant Elvis Costello"
(Next day, "Terry says: are you pissed? Fark off")

The above examples are just about as well-researched, inciteful, and on-the-mark as the utter dross seen this week in our local "newspaper". Do you reckon I'd get a job there? Anyone know what they pay like?

I don't think there's anything as blatant as actual Government interference, but you must remember that when it's a National-led government, the people who run the media and big business are from the same background, frequent the same clubs and restaurants etc. as the people in Government, and it would be very weird if they didn't have "little chats" about how they could help each other out.

And in a Labour-led government, the same goes for the creatives, the small businessmen, the academics, the professionals and the union leaders.

in the 9 years Labour was in power small business thrived, since National have been around small business have been steadily going out of business. I'll accept some maybe due to earthquakes but the rest is predicable ebb and flow stuff, none of which national were abnle to deal with.

No, and there are sections of the media that are quite critical of the supposed economic benefits of hosting. We have a free (sometimes irresponsible, tabloid and lacking in integrity) press here.
