I really hope the club has a solid plan of talent they are going to sign before they start cutting people loose.
It will be a shame to see Daniel go, I would start him and Sanchez every week up front with Ifill.

I dont see this as cutting people loose. Nor do I think you have to have someone in mind yet to replace him
If he doesnt want to accept what the club is offering, and they will have a good idea of his worth to the club, then he moves to somewhere else that will pay what he thinks he is worth, and good luck to him if he gets more elsewhere
I do think he hasnt been utilised enough as a starter but we have been winning, so it is hard to argue against the coaches choices.

Ricki sees Daniel as a squad player, so the club is offering squad wages. It sucks for Daniel but is understandable. My biggest sadness in this, is that if he leaves for Singapore, we won't have a chance to give him the farewell he deserves.

I'm surprised he wouldn't take what was offered to be honest.
He always seems so keen on NZ and the club and I would have been happy to see him come off the bench for a few more years.
He's a great sub and I'd rate him higher than Ward and tentatively say that he is more consistent than Leo, both in delivery and performance.
Isn't the salary cap 1.5 mil? And therefore 125k is close to 10% of the salary cap designed for a squad of 20ish players?

Well, if it is true he's currently on 250k, then he'd basically have to accept a 50% pay cut. Not many people are keen on that.

So sad to see Daniel go. He was from day one a real club footballer. The kids all loved him and he was a great embassador for the club.
Completely understand him going. Hitting 32 he must have realised that his career is nearing an end. If he can cash in for a couple of years in Asia then good luck to him.
I still think he would have had a role to play at the Nix, certainly for the rest of this season and maybe next year as well. He was one of our few "flair" players and when on form could deliver as good a ball as anyone in the A-League.
I was wondering if something was up. Daniel was in red hot form up to about 5 games ago...he was top of the league= for assists and him and Sanchez were going great guns together. Then he started to miss out on game time and got hauled off afew times which did not please him. probably just a coincinence but he probably got the word that he was unlikely to be an AW as well...who knows
Good luck Daniel...you have been great at the Nix. All the best for were ever life takes you!

He hasn't gone yet. He is contracted until the end of the season, and has not been released. He's been given permission to fly to Singapore to look at whether a deal there is worthwhile... he is flying back so he can travel with the team on Thursday for the Mariners game...
..it's still possibel the Singapore deal might fall through and he might still settle for a lower deal with the Nix for next season. (It seems unlikely, but it is still possible). Even without that playing out he probably has not played his last game for the Nix, and we will hopefully get to give him a HUGE send off.

The main reason Daniel is leaving is due to lack of playing time, not the money!!!! He wants to play for the All Whites and also wants more playing time, so cant blame him for leaving. He is sick of coming on as an injury replacement or for the las 10 mins - Source is a good friend of Daniel.Zammy2012-02-13 21:26:31

I would be too if I was in his position, and to be honest, he's been playing better this season than Leo has been.
Such a shame.

As bwtcf says he's not gone yet. Let's see how it plays out before delivering eulogies.
Personally I do find it baffling that Daniel hasn't been used more because he is far and away the best crosser and dead ball deliverer we have, and I think overall has looked consistently more dangerous and creative than Sanchez who is clearly uncomfortable with that wide role.
On the other hand no one knows Daniel better than the coach. We all know Daniel's as slow as a wet week and that he has 70 minutes in him tops. Perhaps Ricki doesn't think he has the hunger to force himself into the line up. Perhaps he's not a great trainer. Who knows. At the end of the day it's up to Ricki to make the tough selection decisions.
The unflattering comparison that quite a few people make with Leo is interesting. Much as I love Daniel, the difference between the two is that Leo will run his guts out for 90 minutes and do the kind of defensive chasing and tracking back that generally goes completely unnoticed.

If the rumours surrounding $ are even partially correct can certainly see why The Club have offered less and Daniel has gone looking. Will be sad to see him go, but realistically he now seems to have a limited role in Rickis plans and would rather see that money spent on younger players. Daniel is also a realist and knows he only has maybe a couple of years left in him so he would want to maximise what he can get.
Good luck to him and fair play to the club for making a tough call on such a popular player.

Bit of a risk considering that they have to play a qualifier now. It would be quite unfortunate if he transferred for that reason, but then Adelaide only got to play one home game against a second rate indonesian club.

This
Sanchez said he really likes playing when Daniel is in the team as well.
Don't think Rickie really gets "flair" players. Daniel was on fire up until 5 games ago and Sanchez was going great guns playing centrally. Since then Sanchez has been quiet playing out on he wing. I know its Rickies call and we have been winning so its no big deal but he does seem to prefer "runners".....whatever works is OK by me.
I wonder if Sanchez will be off at the end of this season....the re-signing thing has gone quiet and Sanchez has said he will take every game one at the time. He also has been gushing about the way other A-League sides play...like the Roar. Possibly he does not see much future playing out wide at the Nix who employ tactics that are not really to his taste. He would be snapped up by quite a few other A-League clubs IMO.
Waste of time recruiting the mythical central playmaker.....we don't play that style of football. Rickie could argue that his style has got us to second on the table......and you can't knock him for that....in truth whatever style delivers you to the top of the table is the right style for the team.

Interesting point about 'flair' players. Herby was anything but a 'flair' player himself. He was more of an athlete. But he turned himslef into a good player by hard work and application.
It is only natural he would like players who are similar: Vinyy Lia springs to mind.

250k was the figure John Mattheson was throwing around on Twitter. On that now and club offering new deal at 125, you can see why he would walk really?
I can see why he would with a 50 % cut, but realistically, that was a HUGE wage bill for a 32 yo sub.
Even 125k seems high to me. Thought he'd be around the 80k range by now.
Bring in some youth for around 50.
Seems like this is the consortium's doing, and from a financial point of view, its the right call.
You know we belong together...

[/QUOTE]Has delivered us there partly by default due to Brisbanes loss of form. Trick is to stay there(4th I suspect) now. If Sanchez and Daniel leave I agree a lot of spark will have gone which leaves a conundrum of how to play with flair and win to keep the 13000 plus turning up.

We haven't played that fantastic one-touch ball speed football since Smith, Sanchez, Daniel, Lochie and Manny (and perhaps even Ward and Pav?) were combining together due to injuries. Quick passes and quick players. Great to watch, especially when we were winning.
Ifill often takes a touch or two and really is the playmaker, not Sanchez in our current system.
Daniel would be a great loss. Is there another player he is comparable to in the A-league?
I will be really annoyed if he leaves this year because of not getting enough game time. He's been in great form this year. When we couldn't unlock Brisbane in the first half I was wishing he was on.martinb2012-02-14 20:31:15

Contrary to opinions lodged to date, Daniel has vastly improved his work rate and defensive chasing back. Watch him closely when he comes on.
Despite climbing to second in the table it still seems to me that RH is defensively minded, conservative and generally favors the grafters. Daniel has his weaknesses but he has great ball skills, excellent vision and delivers beautiful balls into the box and from set pieces. Tragic to me that he is not starting every week; always makes things happen.
