As an FYI, Ifill is from Barbados and that his nationality. Could I have been referring to him possibly? Had I said lazy Englishman, would you have viewed that as rascist too? If I have used the slang term Yank for Smith, would you have written a 2 pager on that as well? The fact of the matter is that we have only one Islander on our roster and its pretty obvious whom that Islander is. What would you like me to refer to him as? Polynesian? Considering he is a Pacific Islander and its a normal term to call someone an Islander, I could have chosen a lot more offensive terms if I was trying to be rascist, considering I am sitting behind a nom de plume. Either way, I suspect you would still have gotten your knickers in a twist. But please, enlighten me as to how I should identify him... This should be good.

Ok, I'm probably just being over-sensitive but laziness is a negative stereotype often associated with people from the Pacific Islands in New Zealand so I think it just implies that correlation - it would be more like saying "bad Asian driver" or "money-grabbing Jew" or even "bad female driver" than "stupid woman". Not that I think Jeff meant that but it just read it and it made me cringe. To much time hanging out with pompous left-wing intellectuals, sorry!

Jeff Vader...you need to get your shiite together. Using terms like "lazy islander" would be considered racist by many people. Saying that you didn't intend it to be racist does not cut it. Think before you post next time!!!!

Moving on...the Earnshaw story looks like it might have some basis. Normally these stories are wildely inaccurate(as well as being fun). If talks have broken down between him and a league 2 club then the Nix could well be in the picture. If he is the guy and arrives with the right attitude then he would be an excellent signing.

He's not that tall so it would mean this seasons strike force won't pose much of an aerial threat(no Brownie either). Nothing wrong with that if you play the right way. Are we going to see a change in the Nix style? More ball on the deck and cutting out looping crosses. Ceretainly with a midfield of Muscat, Smith and Sanchez the potential is there.

But look at this:

"He is the only player to have scored a hat-trick in the English Premier LeagueChampionshipLeague OneLeague Two (or the divisions under their previous names), the League Cup, the FA Cup and for his country at International level."

And still no-one has scored a hatrick at the nix... yet

Its a match made in heaven accoreding to wikipedia.

Of course, how could I be so stupid. Let's sign Hard News then, he's had a lot of playing time this season.

Think he meant that he'd be benchwarming in the championship, so he'd rather come to NZ and get playing time. Not like that makes any sense either mind you. We'd be signing any number of players based on that little series of 'mathematical' statements.

Yeah, that's essentially the point I was making. And like you said these 'this over thats' are pointless.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Killie turn up on loan for the season, he's in a difficult situation at the moment in a shite team with a manager he's had poblems with and he and Ricki seem to have a good understanding.

He's probably terrified Ricki will play him as a DM.

Would be cool though.

I wonder if the mystery loan striker whoever he is, and his manager, are waiting to see if they can arrange a transfer in Europe somewhere before commiting to a loan to New Zealand for a year. For instance it seems like Earnshaw is still being linked with UK clubs and if I was him I'd try to stay there rather than shift across the globe for one season, so the Phoenix move might just be the backup option. Ditto with his club, I'm sure they'd rather sell him or agree to a mutual termination of contract if he had somewhere else to go than keep him on the books for another year. If that is the case then we won't get any confirmation for a while yet, but if he doesn't turn up then have we wasted time we could have been looking for a permanent option? Just a thought...

There are three options for mystery loan striker last I heard and it looks like any movement will happen while Ricki is in the UK for the Olympics (multi-tasking) rather than anything confirmed in July.

so this "lots of games for his country, not gonna play for his club this season" guy is only one of 3? The other 2 could be young guys then, or are all 3 older and more experienced?

Not sure about their age, but I understand all three are possible loan signings. Which would probably suggest they're a bit on the older side.

Permalink Permalink

But generally speaking most loans involve young players dropping down a division or 2 to get them experience. Although in this case, they'd be going to the other side of the world, which does kinda make it seem like they would be in the twilight of their careers. Either way, I doubt they'll be in their 20s

Yeah, that's the point I was making. Younger players looked on as prospects are much more likely to be shipped off to a lower division for game time, not many would be keen to come halfway around the world. Older players under contract who aren't in the first team frame are much more likely.

Probably players that are wanting to be in the shop window for a big money China deal, but not quite good enough to get it sight unseen. So if they rip it up at the start of the season, they would be off in the January transfer window.

random quesition, have we ever made money off a transfer? or do we let our players run down their contracts/release them?

Really I thought it was 400k

Permalink Permalink

400K aint bad, ok I was just wondering

To me selling players for a profit is an indicator that our recruitment strategy is going well and that as a club we can spot and develop talent. (Obviously we want to keep it whenever we can) but now we are an established team in the comp, and we have been in the past 3(?) finals series shouldn’t we be aiming to get bigger fish than what we have seen? Let’s say more ifill, less ward...

Not to say I’m not a fan of the latest recruits, I think they are great players in their own rights. It’s just I want us to start pushing for a league win, rather than a playoff spot.

Just a thought.....

400k transfers are the exception rather than the rule unfortunately. I don't know that we've had many other fees of that magnatude.

More would be nice seeing as the owners have pledged to put profits back into the club.

The difficulty is the salary cap. There are quite a lot of short term contracts in the A league, particularly for those who take up a fair chunk of it,and for foreign players.

Could be worth a go, I rated Culina pretty highly before injury.

Bit of an unkown quantity now seeing as he's been out for ages, other clubs might not be so keen forking out big wages for him.

Can he play on the wing? Would be good for competition for the creative CAM spot.

Wonder how much cash we could scrape together? Whatever is left over from the loan/striker signing + 80% of whatever Pantelis is on?

"Yellow Fever are fantastic – I have to say that"

Permalink Permalink

I would say no chance for few reasons. A fully fit Culina wouldn't move over here to be an injury replacement for what we pay Pantelis, he could get a lot more in Aussie. And will he ever be fully fit? Jets were told he might never play again, we already have enough players with dodgy knees.

Also its not a position we need to fill. As much as I would like us to sign another midfielder so we have to play Manny at RB, it won't happen because we are 110% commited to playing him in the mids.
