I am guessing he is signed under the salary cap?

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Coops.  Lyrics please.

Leave it with me. Will listen to song over and over tonight probably to the bemusement of my better half!

When you combine my brain with a few glasses of Chivas Regal 18yr you never know where it may lead...

Housework without pants?

Pretty good tbh, not the most prolific scorer but we are talking about Eredivise here. Anyone have more detail on this though. Was he signed under the cap? How many year(s)?

Permalink Permalink

2 years, not sure about under cap, if he is gonna be marquee, would assume he'd only be a tiny bit over cap given the owners desires.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Not sure where the pace to burn statement came from, but if true, we are in for a pretty huge change of attack this year. Can't wait!

That just leaves us the 2 kids to sign now.

Am I right in understanding that we are also getting two Indian players for the academy once we promote two to our yoof spots?

Don't think there was a firm commitment about this, more something that could happen at some point in the future.

 Looks like a good signing.

I was expecting the "played for his country" part of this to be a bit of an anti-climax, like 1 cap for Latvia in 2002 or something, but 15 caps for Belgium is impressive.

Looking at his international record from the Belgium FA  - It only lists 14 caps and all but one of those was as a sub. He played 346 mins in total (an average of 24 mins every time he got on).

Knowing our luck, this striker will be the 21st century equivalent of Fake George Weah. But seriously - jd has been reduced to complaining that our press statements have been inconsistent and confusing? That's not glass-half-empty, that's glass-is-filled-with-acid-and-covered-in-TB-germs. (And I know, I know - I was wrong once and therefore I lost my right to comment forever.)

That's not what I'm saying at all.  I think our recruiting has once again been completely haphazard.  Nothing to do with media statements

Moss is a good signing, but arguably doesn't improve our starting XI.

We've not replaced our main midfield goal scorer for the last 3 seasons.  We resigned two overseas midfielders, both of whom could really only be classed as ok last year. No attempt seems to have been made to improve in that area.  Our one backup has never played a minute in the A-League (Lindsay).  We've also lost Daniel.  So we're weaker than last year in that position plus we've lost goals.

No right back still.  Still no-one to pressure Lochead either.

We've taken a punt on Totori, a guy who has been around the traps for ages and not deemed good enough previously, seemingly because he scored goals against the AWs.  I really don't see what he has done to now be A-League quality but an ok punt.  Recent internationals not promising.

Brockie I like as a signing.  Same with Boxall.  Our central defence has improved marginally. But both of those players were signed after becoming available as free agents.

There is not a single imaginative signing in there and it has been that way since we signed Ifill and Greenacre.

- Sanchez and Smith (both brought to Aussie on trial by other clubs - we ended up signing them)

- Brockie, Moss, Boxall.  Free agent All Whites.  Good to see them at the club

- Jade North, Liam Reddy, Danny Vukovic - Aussie Internationals who just happened to become available

- Nick Ward, signed again last year purely because available

- Tony Warner, the club actually go out and target a player and it's him?  Very odd

- Tattsalios, Downey, Diego - random A-League journeymen who will leave each having played less then 10 matches over 2 seasons

Our recruitment is completely reactive and seems to be driven by who is available, not by what the squad actually lacks!

Now we have this new striker, a position that clearly needed filling all season. Looks like we will get someone 3 weeks before the season begins, will be unattached so unlikely to be match fit and hasn't played with the team.  We have a 6 month off season, why leave it until now?  Very intrigued anyway to see who this guy is.

I'm not saying our squad doesn't have some decent players.  I am not laying the blame on Herbert either - but there is something not right in the way that we do our transfer business.

I just don't see a plan in amongst all of this and I had hoped this off-season to see some improvements being made to the quality of the squad overall.

I dont understand all the negative emphasis on players being 'free agents' and 'unnattached'. Don't they have to be one of those things to sign for an A-League club? Or have the rules changed and now transfer fees are allowed? I guess the buyer and seller could negotiate an early release for the player, but what else can be done without transfer fees?
You've said that brockie, moss and boxall are good signings (agreed), and I would argue that brockie has goals in him this season and those goals will replace brown's, albeit from a different position (incidentally a position which bertos hardly ever scored from in previous seasons - so a double whammy of improvement there hopefully). No competition for lochead is a valid point but rowe does sound promising - more promising than tsatts anyhow....
We've also created a proper platform for young players to work from with this academy hoo haa, as well as signing totori (I agree that's a gamble) and now the european striker we were long promised, who seems to have very decent pedigree. Ricki made this comment about him:
"We searched long and hard to find someone who fitted the criteria of the club and I'm delighted we were able to get the deal over the line"
I am guessing we had to wait until now for him to sign as he would've been waiting for european offers within the transfer window - we could never compete with anything there if it had come. Although as it turns out we did come across more attractive than the ukraine...
i understand some of your views on the previous seasons transfer dealings, but I rate this off-season as a complete success after today's cherry on top. RB is probably the only area where we aren't resourced well enough, but I've long been a supporter of the leo-to-RB line of thought so personally I'm completely satisfied...
Cmon JD, our glass is half full, get on board!

Yes, I See Red adapted to a chant.

 Something like this:

(Chorus)
Want to see the ball at his feet
Hi-c-gems, Hi-c-gems, Hi-c-gems
Want to see you scoring goals for me
Hi-c-gems, Hi-c-gems, Hi-c-gems
Hi-c-gems, Hi-c-gems (Gems!)
Hi-c-gems!

Two Under 21`s to be named and we are across the line.

How about an injury replacement for Pantilis.....could be a right back if Leo doesn`t work out......Have to be an Aussie or Kiwi though.

Btw Ricki said that himself, Noah Hickey, Mal Impiombato, Rob Morrision, Henry Tait, and David Dome make up the recruitment panel.

Huysegems, Ifill and Brockie up front.

Juicy.

Re chants - I love the I See Red options.

Also @andrew_gourdie had some genius when he suggested Queen's Bicycle:

Hi-c-gems, Hi-c-gems
We want to see Stein Hi-c-gems
We want to see him score
We want to see Stein Hi-c-gems
We want to see him more and more

Hi-c-gems, Hi-c-gems

In other news - he's a really nice bloke.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Does anyone know how much celery cap Pantelis occupies? I presume we will be more or less full after Stein.

vertonghen, kompany, fellaini, dembele, witsel and defour would all have been very young back then too

stein must've realised the national gig was up with the strength of this belgian generation

Add hazard, lukaku and vermaelen to that side... f*ck me...

Seems like a very decent signing... From what i can tell we have developed a near perfect 11, with a rather large hole at rb

Now, which two youngsters will we sign? I would like Fenton and Rowe. Boyd will behind a lot of players and is really young ASBP will be good for him and next year he can replace Pav.

Some-one of some quality over 6 foot in the box. Could make it interesting. Thankyou Phoenix.

Boyd a definite.......with Huysegems in I`m picking Rowe over Fenton but it could go either way

Hmm no I would leave Boyd for next year and sign Fenton and Rowe.

Rowe offers a bit more defensive cover and we are a little light on that left hand side.

Fenton for similar reasons - we havnt actually got as many wide options as we have had in ze past.

Boyd now has 3 other players in front of him in his position. But once Pav is gone then I would sign him up next year. Still young and another year of regular footy will be good for him

So effectively you have

                  Moss

RB    Sigmund   Durante    Lochhead

                    Muscat

2 spots to fill in here.

    Brockie       Steiny     Ifill

If Sanchez is one, then the other midfielder needs to be a box to box man or we are going to look thin defensively.

Grumpy old bastard alert

Can't wait for YF's favourite devil's advocate - James Dean - to awaken from his slumber and poor cold water on the so far largely unrestrained joy on display at this signing:

"He's too old"

"His goals per game ratio is crap"

"He hasn't played for months, he'll be unfit"

"This is a knee-jerk signing by the Phoenix three weeks out from the start of season"

"He's Belgian"

JD - you know I love you and you also know this is a thinly disguised attempt at a wind-up on my part but let me just pre-empt your natural inclination towards the dark-side by saying it's all cool bro. Just relax and have a little faith. Any signing is a gamble but on paper at least this seems like a good one. It is the natural state of any football fan three weeks out from the start of the season to be highly optimistic and dream that better days are ahead, so let's just enjoy the moment.

And with that I'm off to buy a packet of Belgian biscuits and settle down in front of Youtube for the evening watching 6 year-old videos of Stein scoring goals on FIFA.
