That's not what I'm saying at all.  I think our recruiting has once again been completely haphazard.  Nothing to do with media statements

Moss is a good signing, but arguably doesn't improve our starting XI.

We've not replaced our main midfield goal scorer for the last 3 seasons.  We resigned two overseas midfielders, both of whom could really only be classed as ok last year. No attempt seems to have been made to improve in that area.  Our one backup has never played a minute in the A-League (Lindsay).  We've also lost Daniel.  So we're weaker than last year in that position plus we've lost goals.

No right back still.  Still no-one to pressure Lochead either.

We've taken a punt on Totori, a guy who has been around the traps for ages and not deemed good enough previously, seemingly because he scored goals against the AWs.  I really don't see what he has done to now be A-League quality but an ok punt.  Recent internationals not promising.

Brockie I like as a signing.  Same with Boxall.  Our central defence has improved marginally. But both of those players were signed after becoming available as free agents.

There is not a single imaginative signing in there and it has been that way since we signed Ifill and Greenacre.

- Sanchez and Smith (both brought to Aussie on trial by other clubs - we ended up signing them)

- Brockie, Moss, Boxall.  Free agent All Whites.  Good to see them at the club

- Jade North, Liam Reddy, Danny Vukovic - Aussie Internationals who just happened to become available

- Nick Ward, signed again last year purely because available

- Tony Warner, the club actually go out and target a player and it's him?  Very odd

- Tattsalios, Downey, Diego - random A-League journeymen who will leave each having played less then 10 matches over 2 seasons

Our recruitment is completely reactive and seems to be driven by who is available, not by what the squad actually lacks!

Now we have this new striker, a position that clearly needed filling all season. Looks like we will get someone 3 weeks before the season begins, will be unattached so unlikely to be match fit and hasn't played with the team.  We have a 6 month off season, why leave it until now?  Very intrigued anyway to see who this guy is.

I'm not saying our squad doesn't have some decent players.  I am not laying the blame on Herbert either - but there is something not right in the way that we do our transfer business.

I just don't see a plan in amongst all of this and I had hoped this off-season to see some improvements being made to the quality of the squad overall.

. Ok to much thought in J D statements, must be well educated but the reasoning is right.

Lets be positive, it looks like we have a new striker (his calibre we will find out shortly)

That is a much better situation then we were in a week ago when it looked like we had to make do with what we had

I believe (hope) that there is no way that Ricki would sign a foreign striker who at least was not an improvement on a Brockie or Totori

You never know he may turn out to be the next Ifill

I do see Jemal Johnson is listed as being uncontracted. We were interested previously. However seems to be a wide attacker rather than an out and out striker, which we seem to have a few players already.

That would be a disappointment; I'd think we'd do better with someone playing at a higher level than this.

You forgot to mention Lucas Pantelis.  Still injured, never played a competitive game for us, still with a year to go on his contract.

Yes, you can add LP to the "random A-League journeymen" pile.

I should add that all clubs do need random A-League journeymen!  Ours have just been pretty terrible

To counter one of JD's points, if this mystery striker really is of a reasonable standard we probably weren't going to be able to secure him until at least the end of the transfer window. We'll have to see who it is before that becomes any clearer.

One thing that will be interesting to know (and we probably never will) is how long we've been chasing this guy. I'm curious as to whether statements earlier in the off season about having certain players in mind, lined up, in negotiations etc. were actually the same guy that we're getting. I guess we'll never know how many potential targets fell through and how close we got to securing one.

Also (apologies if this has been mentioned) I notice that tomorrow is the last day for early bird prices on season tickets. I sincerely hope the entire marketing strategy is based around 12 hours of sales tomorrow, and the pitch is "hey, here's this awesome world class superstar we've just signed, BUY YOUR TICKET RIGHT NOW. YES, I'M YELLING AT YOU. RIGHT NOW!" That would be ballsy and impressive in equal measure.

We have to wait and see if we are getting a new striker, but if we do it will be a position that needed filling and it happened, who cares when it happens, it is.
It is prior to the start of the season, just as other teams are still filling their rosters now. Piero, is he in Sydney yet? Who says this player wont be fit ??? how negative is that ?
Of course he hasnt played with the team yet, who says he cant click quickly. The quality of the squad has improved over the off season. I agree with Doloras

I see this on the Nix Facebook as well.  I guess the club decided to extend the earlybird season as it was originally finishing on 31 Aug?

JD,I think you are going to say something positive this year, and when you do the Mayans prophecy will come true - it'll be the end of the world.

Do you think we've done good business this off season?  Perhaps you can spend a bit of time explaining why? I think we've assembled a squad that will be pretty solid and probably finish between 4th and 6th which is fine but doesn't get me excited.
Looking forward to hearing about today's signing as I mentioned.
In a 10 team league we've never finished higher than 4th.  All I want is for once in my lifetime for us to win the league - it would mean more to me than any other sporting thing that could happen (maybe other than the Rabbitohs winning the NRL because my dad's from Sth Sydney and I've supported them since I was tiny).  I make the points I do because I love the Phoenix and I want them to be awesome.  I don't see that happening this year with this squad so I'm not turning cartwheels.  I don't really get why being realistic is labelled "negativity"!

In the spirit of complete and utter over-analysis, I'll put my sizeable balls on the line, lead a wild goose chase and say he's Belgian.

So following in that spirit of over-analysis, a quick troll through wikipedia and we have Emile Mpenza as a striker and Carl Hoefkens as a right back.

That happens a lot around here. Pointing out the million flaws of Ben Sigmund makes you a judas as well.

Now we are getting somewhere, add in Piney`s big and strong and played for his country.......Trolls must be able to come up with a very short list on that info if the hunch is correct.......Then again he could be Dutch !

Delighted 2 introduce our new addition 2 the squad 2day. pedigree & calibre speaks for itself. Good bloke, good english, good name

I asked him how his Welsh was and he hadn't asked... haha!

Speaking of Rigters - where has he gone...? Luckily he was only an U21 or we'd all be a bit pissed in a few hours (insert laughy face).

I was successful in predicting last seasons european transfer speculation (more of a trial) when i said either Maceo Rigters or Andreas Lasnik, but ive got no idea this time around. More hints were dropped last season so it was pretty easy

Agreed... but who knows. If it is him, I'd be more than happy.

If it isn't him, I'll more likely be more than happy too.
