I still think Aaron Clapham could step up to the A League. He's good at distribution, tackles well and has a good shot. Not only would he not breach the import quota but he's desperate to get a professional contract. It seems so obvious to me.

On another note I started a thread on the Holmesdale forum (Crystal Palace) suggesting they should sign Chris Wood when his loan deal expires with Millwall. It has received a lot of posts, mostly favourable. One knowledgeable A League fan has suggested Palace chase non other than Siggy. So you've heard the rumour here first - Ben Sigmund for high flying Palace in the English Championship.

Too slow and would not play as he gives up too many dumb fouls/yellows. If he is whinging about referees now, his style will not win him any friends in England.

Siggy would have no chance as he just does not have the pace.

Read that the Phoenix could increase the number of NZ under 21 players who get professional contracts next season to six. Following on from the success of Fenton and Biss, this would be wonderful for the development of local players from the national league. I take my hat off to you.

Two of them would be Pavlovic & Downey replacements. Would Lindsay be too old for another yr as a youth contract player?

That sounds cool but a lot of youth in the squad. Sounds a bit Gold Coasty and that didn't exactly go well...

Unless we're gonna use the cash we save on wages for some fairly epic players to fill in the squad.

Where you read this anyway? Sauce?

From he Tom Biss article on Stuff - "Herbert has dangled a carrot by signalling that up to six under-21 players could be on the fulltime books of the Phoenix next season."

I was having a think about this tonight. Is Ricki saying that as next years coach or as a director of football? If he isn't the coach next season, it is tying the hands of however replaces him if they are all part of the 23man squad.

Perhaps it indicates that as next season's Director of Football this is certainly his thinking and likely will be part of the new coach's mandate when that person is chosen....or announced, if that role is to be filled by someone in the current wider Phoenix setup.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

I'm all in favour of young kiwis but we have to manage it.  Guys need to come into the A-League prepared through good coaching and preparation not just chucked in straight out of ASBP etc

Ricki for Sydney? :P

They'd have watched the game on Sunday and decide to put a giant X by his name.

This entire article is pretty interesting actually

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/7951406/Phoenix-close-ranks-on-Pavlovics-departure?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

The Wellington Phoenix will not reveal why Mirjan Pavlovic has left the club.

But they have confirmed they are seeking a replacement for the striker.

The Phoenix yesterday announced that Pavlovic's contract had been "terminated by mutual consent" before thanking him for his services and wishing him "every success in his football career".

Last month, the Phoenix issued a statement saying Pavlovic, 23, had "a medical condition which restricted his ability to play professional football".

Phoenix general manager David Dome would not elaborate yesterday, saying "we're just bound by the rules of termination and that's it."

The club's lips were sealed because of an agreement with Professional Footballers Australia, and "it's a sensitive issue". Dome said he could not say if the Phoenix had paid out Pavlovic's contract, because "it's all confidential to the player".

Pavlovic joined the Phoenix in 2010 and scored two goals in 25 games. The former Australian under-23 representative was loaned to Sydney United during the A-League off-season and never returned to Wellington.

Dome said Pavlovic was in Sydney and coach Ricki Herbert had been given the nod to seek a replacement. The Phoenix were "right on" the A-League salary cap of NZ$3.17 million meaning a new signing would be a "straight swap" for what Pavlovic got.

The minimum salary for an over-21 player is NZ$60,000.

Dome said Lucas Pantelis was still in Adelaide recovering from his serious knee injury and confirmed loan player Ricardo Clarke would make way for Dani Sanchez once he was fully fit - most likely next month.

New player potentially.

We're on the brink of our salary cap.

Bye bye Pav.

Bye Bye Clarke.

Yeah some interesting comments. Interesting they want a new player - I wonder if they have any in mind? Or if they just wanna bring in a FSE lad

So couldn't say that whether we paid him out, but then goes on to say the salary would need to be a straight swap. Implies that we haven't paid him out then

Please, please let it not be Hamish Watson.

Or that we did but the FFA allowed us his cap room due to the uniqueness of the termination. But yeah more likely we didn't pay him out.

Fallen off the radar a little, but maybe we should have a look at Panny Nikas? Centre Mid, former NYL player of the year at CCM. Wouldn't think he would want much over the minimum.

Careful,we don't want to hurt pavs feelings by talking about a replacement for him so soon.

Well we still have Pantelis' injury replacement available, if pretending I'm talking about that makes Pav feel any better.

Save up the money and get someone better for the last 3 months.

Save the money up,what money. The way i thought it read this morning was they had spent up to their salary cap limit and could only afford someone on similar money.

Which begs the question where the FK have they spent that money on.We must have some guys who must be getting way more than they are worth.Makes you also wonder how some of the other teams assemble their squads under the cap,or dont they.

The money from Welnix. The salary cap won't be an issue because we don't have marquee, local marquee or youth marquee players. I'm assuming the money from Welnix will be for example 60k less what has been paid to Pav, and that amount will be the same whether that pays for someone over 6 months or 3 months. I don't think a 60k striker is likely to add anything unless we get very lucky. So, save it up for the Jan(Feb?) transfer window and get someone better.

I would love that.  Wouldn't solve our midfield issues, but could see Huysegems going very well alongside him.

Based on Killen (unlike Huysegems and Brockie) being very good receiving the ball in the air (which makes up 60%+ of the balls our forwards get).  He also has a very good touch, and I could see Huysegems running off him well.

Pipe dream though.

Huysegems is better with his feet than his head and Killen is the reverse, could work. Huys certainly needs someone who can play to his feet though. Couldn't RH tell McGlinchey if he wants to go to Brazil then he better shift to Wellington?

Still think Tade is the best finisher in NZ but you can't have him.

Once again, your flair-less midfield is crying out for Clapham.

We already have our quota of imports thanks. If he was good enough, he would have got a spot.

He could be getting close to becoming a NZ citizen. His chances would improve vastly if that is the case.

I'm sorry, I don't know how Smith got selected for the Phoenix. I doubt he'd even get in the current City squad. Clapham has better all round skills, is tenacious and is good at free kicks. RH has some peculiar preferences, remember you guys had to force Rojas on him when it was obvious the kid had talent. I think RH has a stubborn streak that often gets in the road of his judgement. Just look at Lochhead's continued presence in the AWs.
