Um. It'd be in a different city. A second team would increase total spectators at A league clubs. It wouldn't decrease the nix crowds at all,if anything they'd increase due to a nz derby game being played 6 times a year.

I think your maths is a little off there Tegal.

3 + 3 = 6

At least that's what my calculator says.  Maybe it needs new batteries.

EDIT: nope, changed the batteries and it still says 6.

I think what nightz is getting at, is that it won't be 6 derby games a season, it will still only be 3 games.  One nz team will host the derby team team twice at home and once away, thus playing each other 3 times in the regular season.

Great idea. Needs to be passed on every week. Takes me back to the time I declared that Tony Lochhead was the best right back in the league, not to mention various other bits of drivelling nonsense.

Needs a nominations thread, and a poll thread. Though guess that could turn bad.

Two thoughts on another team our of Auckland

1: Give it to ACFC. After all, they beat CCM so they would clean up the league with their team of ESOL players... oh wait, import restrictions. As you were.

2: Give it to someone else and watch all the ACFC players go there. Great to see the knitting circle have a meltdown.

Having 1 kiwi team in competition offers the FFA a whole extra revenue stream. Adding more teams from NZ wont be adding a lot more in terms of money they get from sky.

And why would they choose another NZ city when they have other bids sitting in their own backyard?

Auckland is the biggest city in Aus/NZ without a team. Long term I am sure they will go back, but not any time soon.

Saying that I would love an annual Waitangi Day derby game, even if it would always be an away trip.

I agree, I think one day Auckland will have another A League team. It would certainly be a big boost for local players seeking a pathway to a professional career and the Phoenix-Auckland derby aspect would be great. However it would need someone with deep pockets. There would also be the thorny issue of the O League, which is currently the lifeblood of the ASB Premiership. Where would this leave Auckland City, unless it became a feeder club for a new A League franchise? Don't see anything happening for another five years.

ACFC are a credit to the hard work and dedication of a lot of supporters of the best club in the land. Without this great little club there would be no NZ national league because NZF don't give a stuff.

If some one did come along and got an A-League team for Auckland, what would they need to do to get the support from the fans of Auckland City & Waitakere?

With due respect to the Phoenix and the current environment, there is no way in hell ACFC fans will ever support an A League side. Its not in their interests too. If it was, they would be behind the Phoenix wholeheartedly

They wouldn't have to get their permission - the arent professional teams.
However it would be silly not to communicate with them and work with them so they can all benefit.

So ah David Beckham for a guest stint...

Terry gave us an exhibition match, Welnix to give us 10 games for our team? David Dome denies nothing.

So grinds the rumor mill, breaking down harvested tweets into baseless speculation.

Come on admit it JV. You still resent the fact that ACFC were the 1009 champions of Africa. I've heard you muttering under your breath at Kiwitea Street.

Im asking about the fans, rather than the clubs. What would a new team have to do to win their support? Would support from the two clubs be willing to support 1 team?

Tbh, even if they are not really interested I'm surprised the Nix haven't tried to fan the flames on this one a bit more. Would be a piss easy way to keep the Nix and the A-League in the papers for a while.

Agreed - just make a press release saying the nix have not ruled out making a bid for David beckham

I find it very interesting that this would even be an issue, although the history of the Kingz/Knights suggests that it might be. In Wellington the football community has pretty much jumped in behind the Phoenix regardless of any local club loyalties. OK, so there's an extra ASB Prem franchise in Auckland but does that really matter? Wouldn't you just support both? (as ACFC fans on this forum are always imploring us to do with Team Welly).

If there were some people from ACFC involved behind the scenes and the set up was similar to what the Nix now have with ACFC acting as a feeder then I can't see why it wouldn't work nicely. It might actually give ACFC (and the ASB Prem) more stability, while also satiating their supporters desire to compete at the highest level possible (as long as a hardcore few can get past an almost xenophobic dislike of NZ's participation in an 'Aussie' league). Waitakere supporters would just have to decide how petty they are, or get in behind their own bid (which is the same choice facing ACFC supporters if an Auckland bid came from elsewhere).

I will withdraw my support for the Phoenix for any period while David Beckham is playing. He may increase crowds, but if that is the reason for signing him, we could maybe sign Bono, who would probably increase crowds even more, and isn't much worse a footballer.

Or maybe I will keep supporting and bring some banners along, like LA Galaxy fans have done in the past:

1) Increase crowds
2) With FFA funding, potentially it will cost very little
3) He is still a MUCH better midfielder than any other option we have.

Can't see it happening, but I certainly wouldn't complain if it does.

Ive said this eariler, but I feel like Beckham might be as effective as Elliot was for us.

He too had a great vision and range, but in his small stint, couldnt settle into our team and get on the same wavelength..
However we are a different attacking unit now, and maybe it could work?

I'm guessing it was more the effect of a guest player on our team? If so, then Elliott was not effective at all. Would Beckham be? When you look at the calibre of imports that have come to our league and done well, then its not unreasonable to think Beckham would do well too. The effect he has on the team, may be a different story. If I was coaching against him, I'd sacrifice a man and have him stuck to him like loo papter to an asshole and suffocate him out of the game - minimise his effect. I'm surprised no one has really done that with ADP and he is having a field day. Surely coaches have woken up to that (or is he just too good)

How do we feel about Fred and his guest stint?

ex herald

We are extremely concerned,'' Dome said. "There's no doubt the crowds outside the first game with Del Piero have been poor. It's not sustainable. At the moment, Wellington is saying to us that football in the capital is not a sustainable business model.

"If it means playing away from Wellington, we will look at it. If it means more money to buy players, we will do that. It's all up for grabs.''

Can't believe Dome said this - don't they get it. Start winning and seriously challenge for top two. Crowds 10,000 plus easy. Wellington is saying to us that it will no longer accept a mediocre campaign, which includes a late run to scrape into the top 6. They want to win this thing, and with the exception of the opening game and last weekend, Herbert and his side have been mediocre.
