We're needing a number of changes to be fair, and Im all for Hogg. Finishing outside the 6 might be what we need in order for Welnix to start looking properly at the squad at hand, especially if they want people to start turning up.

Not really Welnix's job to look at the squad. Welnix told Ricki he could spend the whole salary cap. Ricki got the players he wanted. Ricki has always said it is not his philosophy to go and sign marque players. We have got the squad that Ricki thought could do the job, the buck stops with him.....now its up to him to make it work with the players he recruited!
Id say it is, as owners its their job to look at and oversee the entire club operation, players and all. Its Ricki's job to recruit, sign and implement yes. They pay Ricki to do all these things, and when results are coming and youre at the top of the table, as owners you can sit back and put your feet. When results are inconsistent and you're falling outside the 6, you could say owners might jsut grow a little concerned.

I think you are confusing the job of the owners vs the job of the General Manager.

Eric Watson does not scout for players for the Warriors or overlook the Warriors squad - he pays people to do that in specialist roles in the club. Its not Welnix job either. In this case I would say its overseen by football operations which would be Ricki, David, the other coaches and perhaps Mal?

Im simply saying, as seen with clubs the world over, if the owners dont like whats going on they make the call. Chelsea managers dont fire themselves

I was just about to suggest Dan Keat as a loanee, considering the MLS is over for the season. However, I don't think he'd be better than what we have as he looked pretty average for the All Whites. Tim Payne, on the other hand, would be ideal. I know we tried to sign him before he went to Blackburn. Is he better staying in the Blackburn system or getting a full-time gig with the Nix?

The Chelsea situation is a rather extreme example to use though.

Three for me, and two for them.

He started in the last 3 reserve team games before the Xmas break and was captain in the last. Given his age and talent, I think he will be in their future plans. But then again the clubs in a mess atm, maybe he wants to come home.

With the greatest respect I think you would find that Keat would be significantly better than any of our current CMs. Don't judge him by the last AW game where he came in with little team preparation. He looked OK when he came on against Jamaica. You don't get signed and retained by LA Galaxy if you have no talent. Keat did not look out of place when he made his debut for Galaxy against Real Madrid. He would have been trained by some of the best coaches in the MLS. He also would have been rubbing shoulders with the likes of Beckham, Donovan and Kean at training. If he was available for a loan spot at the Nix then I would take him in a flash.

Question. If we loan a player and the Club loaning the player agree to pay his wages while he is with us, does this count towards our salary cap. My thinking is it would be classed as a guest appearance? Also along the same lines.. Do we have a parent club where they provide us up and coming quality youth players to get them first team football experience

From Page 39

13.15 Player Payments include (but are not limited to):

(f) for a player loaned to the Club during the Contract Year - the higher amount of either remuneration paid to the Player by the club or the pro rata proportion of the Minimum A-League Remuneration; and

http://www.pfa.net.au/fileadmin/user_upload/_temp_/Variation_of_A-League_CBA_2008_9_-_2012__13_-_Binding_Sheet__August_2011__01.pdf

Anything we pay them counts. If we pay them less than the A-League minimum wage, they still get calculated at the minimum wage.

More interesting is the link to see who is a free agent. A couple of names stood out Darius Vassel and John Carew.....both useful EPL players. Not saying we should sign them...can't anyway with import slots taken. Carew 32 is 6 ft 5 inches.....not a bad target. Was a very handy player from memory

Yeah... Don't sign him but here are his stats.

I am saying two things
1, Its interesting that quality players who are not that old are struggling to find clubs....which is a sign of tough economic times. We will probably see more and more quality European players being offered in this part of the world. When I was in Singapore last month the local paper reported that Malaysian club Johor had just signed a Spanish striker Daniel Guiza 32.... La Liga's top scorer 07/08 season and 2 goals for Spain at Euro 2008. Also being offered was Brazilian Geovanni 32 from Brazil ex Man City and Hull City....I remember him scoring a screamer against Arsenal at the Emirates a few years ago. I'm sure we will be seeing these sort of players appearing in the A-League...which will be great!
2, Carew was off contract last August....probably around the time we were looking at Huysegems. We ended up signing a Belgian with good feet and crap in the air. When you consider that a large part of  our game consists  of putting the ball in the ball in the air, a player SIMILAR to Carew would have been quite handy at the Nix. Watching Paartalu and co clean us up in the air for the Roar I just had this whimsical dream of John Carew at the Nix.

these players are finishing contracts of about £20-30k per week, so have no pressing need to continue to play football.  I am sure that they would continue to play if a club in Asia/Dubai offered them some similar wages, but I cannot see them trapsing all the way to Wellington to play for somewhere around £2-3k per week.  If they were going to continue to play for the love of it, I am sure that they would do it closer to home.

Yeah! you are right. NZ is a long long away to Europeans. Carew went back to Norway but his wage demands were too high and then was apparently trying to squeeze money out of clubs in Asia. I guess we have quite a way to go before attracting those sort of players. Mind you Geovanni was asking for up to $300,000  NZD according to the Singapore paper.

I know it's been considered before, but maybe this is a good time to have another look for prospective imports from the J-league and K-league (both are in the off season).

If fitness is the name of the game, well these are two of the most fast paced leagues in the world.

But they didn't come out saying that they wouldn't. Adelaide wants a transfer fee for him also. It is all a bit weird.
