Ok confirmed.

Doesn't say much about the imports (Totori I'm looking at you yet again) if he is the one to drop from the match day squad. Hopefully the start of some tough decisions that need to be made.

agreed, no idea about what he'll do but at least it's an effort to fix things in the middle.

He's a wide attacking player.
Sanchez is much better in the middle than him and he can't defend so can't see him taking Lia or Manny's spot.
More likely to see him come in for Boyd, Fenton or Totori.

Hope he proves me wrong and turns out to me a midfield maestro but I doubt it - potentially could do a similar job to Malik at Adelaide, I guess.

Stoked to have the signing. Hopefully injects something new. I do have to question it though. Its just that we are supposed to be trying to play this total football style and we just signed a player who has been released by the coach who has popularised this style and generally regarded as the total football guru in the A-league.I know its only til seasons end and we are in a spot but still...

Regardless good to see some positive action at the club.

I liked him at fury. Seemed to have good pace and was dangerous when used well. Doesnt seem to have the same pace anymore - or hasnt used it.

Thought maybe he would become a different player under ange but nope.

think he offers something different in an AM role - not afraid to run at players through the middle which we done really have (well totori I guess).

To be honest id rather have him than totori

He started the 10-11 season very well, then got a lengthy injury. Never really got that form back. Seem to remember Victory signing him up whilst still recovering.

Pretty underwhelming signing to me, just feels like another body in the squad. Really hope he proves me wrong.

so replaces totori on the bench?

Totori would have a better video highlights clip than the one of Cernak's  that was posted on here

so I don't see where this new signing fits, if Totori is better then he's not going to make the ebnch which seems a waste of $$$

Is it though?  The problems in midfield are at the core of it - the Smith - Muscat - Lia bit - not really further forward.  It's a replacement for Smith/Lia we need not another attacking player

Problem is our midfield is full of players not up too this level...[ and our full backs ].....

Even at Victory I wouldn't have said he was crap, just not a stand-out.
I think he's probably a step up from Lia, defending wasn't awful at victory.
Or a Totori replacement, that's fine.
Either way not a big risk.
Hey guess what...
We recruited an NZ left back and an AM during the January transfer window.

at least they've learnt not to sign crocked players on longer term contracts aka Pants

underwhelmed.  not another wide attacking midfielder.  surely.  ahem

brockie totori fenton boyd ... cernak
bye bye totori?
fenton to be developed centrally?

He looks to have 4 goals in 50 apps

So thats 4x Vinny's conversion rate

I think Ricki has a massive blind spot when it comes to central midfield.  I don't think he actually knows what a good functioning central midfeld actually looks like.  Or maybe he just doesn't seem to value midfielders in the same way he doesn't value right backs?  It's the same with the AWs - there is so little attention paid to that part of the pitch and he often seems willing to sacrifice a midfielder to get an extra attacker on the pitch or play someone out of position there.

Started off ok with Ross Aloisi, Richard Johnson, Felipe, Lia, Ferrante and Tim Brown - easily our best midfield crop in my opinion (also had Jeremy Christie though - pretty yuk)

Lost Felipe and Aloisi and it's been pretty much down hill since then.

McKain did an ok job in there at times, but he's not really a midfielder.  The Muscat switch has worked ok at times too, but again he's pretty limited.

The league moved past Ferrante pretty quickly and has done the same to Lia (crazy we re-signed him in hindsight).  Manny I'm concerned is going the same way, although if his job is limited to getting the ball back he might be ok.

Sanchez was signed, then played out of position, now looks a bit lost and light weight.  Alex Smith is basically a utility player doing a job in midfield and is woefully out of his depth at A-League level.

Toto, Diego, Simon Elliot, Cameron Lindsay, David Mulligan, all signed and barely given a game.

While Isaka has more than Vinnie, I have to give Vinnie some credit, Cernak only has twice his conversion rate.

And Cernak has played 50 A-League games, whereas Lia has 124.

I know. My understanding was that Tiki-taka evolved from Total football as a progression of ideas. Therefore if I couldn't call Total Football by that name I guess I would call it by a similar name, Tiki-Taka seeing as I don't know of a another name for the style.
Jeez.

Wait are you doing the maths right? 4 goals in 50 would be the same as 8 in 100. I was thinking of just Lia's nix games but he's on 2 from 100 games (actually 124 as you point out). So clearly his goals to games conversion rate is at least 4X

I don't know Vinnie used to have quite the goal lust back in the day. Would be interesting to see their total career shots taken stats. Get an idea for how many goal kicks he has instigated.

Freak aren't those beginning to look like glory days- two midfielders with experience at prem clubs, the legendary Ross Aloisi, Timmo AWs VC, Lia and Felipe. The good Ferrante too- not the one who lost his bottle.

[quote=james dean]

Elliot definitely got a run- and it was a guest spot IIRC? Mulligan I think could have been tried in the mids, but who would he have to have pushed out? Diego was a sub ala Totori and seemed to have motivation issues. Toto total cack. Lindsay perhaps- but then...

These aren't the most impressive names to make a case for Ricki's failures in the mids. I think Brown is the clearest case for keeping Ricki- you all bagged him you baggers- but now we are really missing his leadership, experience, fight and goals.

Who should we look at? Caravella might have been a name, but is surely towards the end of his career. This is the tricky bit. Keat isn't a midfielder anymore apparently, and hasn't had the experience Brown had before we signed him.

Rumours on twitter that we are chasing Carlos Hernandez, despite the fact that we have no import slots left.

Guest stint is still possible, but I would rather we get Smeltzy if the Glory are looking at off loading him.

Not sure Carlos would meet the criteria set out by the FFA for a guest spot (not that it has mattered in the past)

Former Johnny Warren medalist? We were allowed Fred and Kentucky Fried Carlos has had a bigger impact than him in the a-League.

C might the biggest hurdle.  Doesn't provide any marketability for the club.
