It will take more than a couple of half decent games in the last few weeks to convince me that McKain is worth a shot. Perhaps injuries have had a bit to do with it but he was very poor last season and has hardly set the world on fire this season. No spring chicken either.

Yeah kinda seems like Saudi Arabia(?) or where ever he went killed him. Has been pretty sub average ever since he got back.

76 - Ben Sigmund has made 76 interceptions in the @ALeague this season; more than any other player. Sharp.

and probably 76 times he has flown out of the line, missed, and left a gaping hole too! :P

I think my perception of Siggy this season is coloured from being at the WSW match where his screw-up in front of goal let one in.

This is all a bit silly. We've got Siggy and he is a perfectly good A-leauge CB. He has his shortcommings like any other player but based on form I don't see McKain being better so....

Our problems this season were largely Midfield ones, the defense didn't do itself any favors but the entire team has been dysfunctional this season.

Bottom line Siggy is a more than acceptable CB for the Nix and the A-league. Fond memories of McKain 3 seasons ago are made more distant by his record since.

Seems I jumped the gun suggesting McKain, he still has one more season left at Adelaide.

My perception of Siggy is that I too believe that he is a more than capable CB for the A-league, and whilst he may have made a few errors in judgement this season he has to contend with a piss poor midfield and a general low morale team around him. yes he has his faults but nobody can deny his committment to the team as a whole...in fact there are a a number of players that you can  see visibly shrink from going into a 50-50 ball with siggy because they know he isnt going to,pull out of the tackle.  Of course i also dont deny that I could be one of those pathetic and unsophisticated types that one of our owners talks about

Unless I'm much mistaken I don't see any wingbacks in that list besides ours. Ooh wait Ritter is a LB. Ooh shit missed Heffernan too.

Tottori is there which is interesting...

Miller and Thompson are the only two names there that spark my interest. Anyone else see any plausibly desirable additions?

Hmm, not so sure about that. While we've clearly had a problem in midfield this season, the problems our CBs have had are not all related to that. And it's not just Siggy too, Durante hasn't performed all that well this season too.
I guess the other way to look at it is that our previous approach and combative midfield may have masked some of the problems we've had at the centre-back position.

Really? I don't recall an even faintly combative midfield last season (Dani Sanchez combative?). In fact the rather odd and frustrating tactic seemed to be to concede midfield, invite the opposition onto our defence, then repel them through a mixture of good luck and extremely effective work from Paston and the back four.

As A82 says it's A League we're talking here. If you were to go through all of A League CBs and pick out those who have performed consistently well over the last three years you would end up with a disappointingly short list.

Since when was Sanchez a big part of the team last season? The point is our focus in midfield was on breaking down opposition's play rather than building our own play, and that is always going to make the backline look better than it actually is.

If new boss signs a confident, ball playing CB, which you'd assume is a requirement for our new football philosophy, then siggy will be struggle to make starting line up...

...and with one remaining import spot and gaping holes at Right back/DM or in midfield in general I'm going to say that is a highly unlikely area for recruitment.

I don't see signing a new CB as very high on the priority list. In saying that, gonna be interesting to see the draw in November if Siggy and Dura are both away.

Fair call news - Id love the sigg of 2011/12 back.  He was just on the cusp of becoming a bit more than a heroic 1980's style CB.

And totally agree that DM is the big ol' gap.  Manny can stay put at RB, as he is pretty bloody good there...

FFA have said that will not be a problem for us again.

I just don't get why they can't break for the windows, we have a ridiculous sized off-season as it is. Lets look at the dates, assuming similar season start to this year

Season Starts Oct 4th Round 1

FIFA Window Oct 12-16

Round 2 would have to be Oct 18th-20th

FIFA Window Nov 16-20

Round 6 would be Nov 22nd-24th

FIFA Window Mar 5th (Wednesday)

So after that the season would be two weeks delayed for 2013/14 with the final round being 11th-13th April

With the Final Played May 4th (Still leaving a 5 month off season?)

And going forward the windows are expected to be March/June/Sept/Oct/Nov each year (All 5 being double game windows) - So would move the final out to May 11th (Barring starting earlier, which is unlikely due to League/AFL Finals)

I think that the TV deal has had a lot to do with it, Fox Sports expect 5 games a weekend for 27 weeks during the league, which is frankly stupid bargaining from FFA. That is the only reason I have heard that explains this ridiculous policy.

But this has been discussed in depth elsewhere though, no need to have this conversation again.

That's good news, at least they're thinking about it. Qualifying is obviously more important but if they can prevent out squad getting too f**cked over, that would be nice!

That is the same shape as the Ranfurly Shield. The plate in the middle of the players is wildly similar too.
