Surely Boyd's goal will be to get himself above Pav in the pecking order, which is fairly realistic if he's decent. If he can do that he should get a fair few appearances off the bench, plus more game time during international windows and if there are injuries. Good signing imo.

I think he is already above Pav in the pecking order
Will we see Pav in Wellington at all this season is the burning question ??

Yeah it has seemed very odd that he didnt travel with the squad or isnt back in town now?

The 2 year extension was always a bad choice. But it did happen in the Terry financial era which we are still feeling the effects of this year with Downey and Pantelis

I think he is above Pav already without having played at this level! :>)  An exciting skillful talent from what I saw at Porirua Park a few weeks ago.  Hope he gets some game time now...wise move from Club to secure him for 3 years.

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

So with the AW defenders out during the window - surely that means someone like Rowe has the inside running for the spot?

Can't wait for YF's favourite devil's advocate - James Dean - to awaken from his slumber and poor cold water on the so far largely unrestrained joy on display at this signing:

"He's too old"

"His goals per game ratio is crap"

"He hasn't played for months, he'll be unfit"

"This is a knee-jerk signing by the Phoenix three weeks out from the start of season"

"He's Belgian"

JD - you know I love you and you also know this is a thinly disguised attempt at a wind-up on my part but let me just pre-empt your natural inclination towards the dark-side by saying it's all cool bro. Just relax and have a little faith. Any signing is a gamble but on paper at least this seems like a good one. It is the natural state of any football fan three weeks out from the start of the season to be highly optimistic and dream that better days are ahead, so let's just enjoy the moment.

And with that I'm off to buy a packet of Belgian biscuits and settle down in front of Youtube for the evening watching 6 year-old videos of Stein scoring goals on FIFA.

Just saw this as been away in San Sebastien (I'd recommend it, great food great City beach)
This is exactly the type of signing I've been crying out for!  Quality, properly targeted to fill a gap in our squad and should enhance our style of play.  I'm really looking forward to seeing this guy in action - hope he has some match fitness.  He'll get a lot more chances here than he would do in Holland/Belgium with A-League defences so I wouldn't worry too much about those goal scoring stats.
Did people read the announcement as he had signed in the Ukraine but then backed out of the contract?  If so, we may have gotten a bit lucky with this one...

We agree!

I would think Fenton, since he played a lot during pre-season. We seem a bit light for wide midfielders with Bertos being moved back to RB. I guess it would depend on who we can pick up for an injury replacement for Pantelis. We should have a bit of cash to spend on a replacement, but finding a decent Aussie/Kiwi will be hard.

With Hard News saying we are looking for a injury replacement for Sanchez also, I guess that means his injury is worse than we thought? Maybe we can find a import RB for an injury replacement, but not 100% sure if the rules mean we need a like for like replacement.

The import injury replacement thing is a little vague, but the team could argue that losing Sanchez in the middle means we had to push manny in there and therefore need a RB.

I think Sanchez will be out for the first few eeks getting fit.

Pantelis replacement would be great - but only if they had A-League or european experience

I hope Boyd gets more opportunities than Kosta did.

Only option I can think of that would be available would be David Carney. Sounds like he is on his way out of Bunyodkor, but I would think he would a lot want more than we pay Pantelis. But he would also add cover for Lochhead at the same time.

Toby Bertsch from Lower Hutt has taken the spot vacated by Boyd.

Had forgotten Pav.   So wished some other team had swept him away with a juicy transfer fee

Not sure on both accounts.  Played holding midfield tonight.

Scott Basalaj I reckon

But in all seriousness, as long as the other lads work hard, I can see another 3 or 4 of them making the bench at least during the season as injury cover or short term promotions.

Considering how impressive Fenton has been in the pre-season, he'd have to have inside running for the spot.

Agreed  El G. My pick too.

By the sounds of it Fenton deserves it on merit.....but it leaves us heavy in numbers in the attacking third on the left flank.

For the balance of the squad would still prefer to see Rowe there

The way his pre-season has gone, I wouldn't be surprised to see him start against Sydney.

From all the reports, anyone other than Fenton would be madness. He hasn't just had the best preseason of the youth players, he has had the best preseason of any player. Could well be starting but otherwise sounds very valuable as a sub to bring on if we are chasing the game.

A Sydney start would depend on the fitness of Ifill and Sanchez and the form of Totori I imagine based on the line-ups we've been starting.

How's my driving? - Whine here

I'm also hoping its Fenton as we don't want to see another A-League club swoop in on our talented yoof.(Not another Marco/Kosta saga, please)

Mind you, we seem to have some good talent in the academy, that's heartening.(Piss off Melb. Tarts..nothing to see here!)

its obviously fenton. the fact people are questiong that seems mad.

However the nix would look even madder if they chose someone else.

I would have taken Rowe over boyd, and in fact would still take him as well, but fenton has to be there

That too. Fenton > daylight > Totori.

To be fair i dont even see this as a bad thing. Yeah of course i hope we keep Fenton, but if we had kept Kosta and Marco theres a good chance there wouldnt be any room in the current squad for Boyd + whoever else. Im not going to complain about more and more young kiwis moving into professional football, even if that means theyre on the oppostion

I hear what you're saying AJ13. I agree that for them to advance their careers is great for them and for NZ football.

My gripe is I'd much prefer to see them go to overseas rather than an opposition A League franchise.I'd also prefer WP got some financial benefit too.

Great news, hope to see him go ahead of Totori in the pecking order.

Like most young men and women who succeed in their chosen sport, Fenton has much to thank his parents, Lindy and Mike, for.

“They’ve supported me from day one,” Fenton says.

Dad is soccer crazy, while Mum is the voice of reason and tries to keep some balance in my life.

LOL.

Anyone feeling a bit excited now with 2.5 weeks to go?
