PANAMANIAN MAY MAKE PHOENIX DEBUT

The Wellington Phoenix has signed Panamanian Ricardo Clarke and he may make his debut from the bench tomorrow in Christchurch against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Clarke, 19, has joined the Phoenix on loan as an injury replacement for midfielder Dani Sanchez who is out of action following a knee operation.

The player only arrived in Christchurch this morning and head coach Ricki Herbert said he would be assessed by the club’s medical and technical staff before deciding whether he would play a part in the game at AMI Stadium.

“It depends how much the long journey has taken out of him,” Herbert said of Clarke, who plays up front.

“If possible I would like to give him a run but we’ll wait and see how he is.”

Herbert describes tomorrow’s game as his team’s “first real major test” after touring India and playing local sides in pre-season games.

“It is a great opportunity to get a bench mark as to where we are at,” he said.

“West Sydney have played other A-League teams pre-season, they are new to the competition and will give us a good challenge which is what we need.

“We are missing Paul Ifill, Dani Sanchez, Jimmy Downey, Vince Lia, Mirjan Pavlovic and Lucas Pantelis, but it provides a good opportunity for the new players we have signed.

“Louis Fenton will get an opportunity to start and Stein (Huysegems) will have the chance to familiarise himself with his new team mates in a game situation.

“Leo (Bertos) is settling into a new role at right back. He has looked comfortable so far but he will get tested tomorrow.

“Manny Muscat is reverting to the holding midfield role where he has done so well in the past,

“My focus is on what we’ve been working on for the last few months.

“We’ve elected to play a little differently so this will be a test of what we are doing.”

The game kicks off at 2.30.

Great stuff bringing a wild card in. Love it. Would rather try something out there like this, than bring in a journeyman without as club right now.

Hope he isn't a Panamanian Johnny Chen then. I guess we are taking a punt here, short term injury replacements wouldn't be that attractive to overseas players.

Is the best I could find about him, current season 7(2) 1G, calls him a striker. Look forward to seeing him in action, I love that the team is looking to a lot of different spots for players now as well. Also good to see a young foreigner given a chance.

Well, I doubt we'll buy.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

crazy? didnt expect that. I wonder if he is seen as an attacking mid or how we are going to fit him in? Hopefully he impresses

Maybe we had both him and Stein lined up for the striker spot? Odd that hes a striker. Wonder if we could see Huysegems play a bit deeper behind a front 2 - he seems to have the technical ability to do so

Sanchez getting the cut if this guy turns gold?

This signing is a pleasant wee surprise.

What if this guy does turn out to be a gem and not a Johnny Chen? - Do we keep him, who do we cut (Alex Smith) ?

I'd say Sanchez's spot would be much more in danger than Smith's.

Well yeah, if he turns out to be good we'd be fools not to sign him given we will have the option in January.

Has he been signed sight unseen though by Ricki... has he or anyone else actually watch him play at all at the NIX???

If we are signing young talent unseen, a kid at my work has been offered 3 contracts for footy (know his mum) but his saffa passport gets in the way.... runs a 100 meters in less than 10.5 (quicker than Usain Bolt at same age) and can finish. Technically ok, but not brilliant. Bring him over!....

the above is actually true... but i would never expect him to be signed or anyone unless there was some serious scouting done (aka George was Awesome) so whilst its great to see signings I would have like to see another academy boy get a run. Atleast the coaches know what they are like first hand.

Surely Totori on pre-season reports (although obviously not before he's given a couple of months to prove himself)

I read somewhere on these forums that he had signed or was about to sign to a Ukrainian club but then went to see the place that he was going to play football and changed his mind. I guess his manager then put out the bait and Wellington bit.

OK...

Why are Panama Hats called Panama Hats when they actually come from Equador?

The Panama Canal is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. What are the other six?

How will James Dean manage to spin this so that it is bad news?

Interesting signing, I would like to know the back groud and how long the eye of the Phoenix have been on this young one.

Oh yeah, completely forgot about him. Goes to show how much I expect from him this season I guess.

I don't think it's spin.  This is weird

we've replaced a central midfielder who was probably in or close to our best XI with a 19 year old none of our staff have ever seen play live (I think that's a fair assumption).  It's hardly like for like

Plus, instead of using the young players we're developing we've brought someone in from overseas.  We already have 2 young kiwi attacking midfielders who signed as pros this week

If some thought/scouting went into those one it would be nice to hear about it at the press release Just saying we have a 19 year old from a club in panama with a ground capacity of 1k on loan doesn't inspire a lot of confidence

How about giving him a chance? What do you want, every little detail that went into the signing put into the press release? Since when does that ever happen, for any signing. I get that we haven't exactly heard of him, but it's funny how predictable the doom and gloom bandwagon jumping in is.

Actually if he's not going to start we're better off holding onto the extra import spot

Between you and Doloras you seem to think we should be glad that anyone wants to play for us.  You do realise we pay the players right?  They're not doing us a favour
