I asked this in the Southern thread but this guy Tom Jackson, did he use to play upfront for Otago? Ran about and did some headless stuff at times or have I got the wrong guy. Thinking 4 years ago?

Not sure. At 22 I'm thinking why? I'd rather we looked at other guys in NZU17's like Stuart Holthusen or Ridenton etc and gave them a trial. Kind of guys we need to be bringing on really...

Doesn't hurt anyone to give him a trial.

This from a Costa Rican football commentator on Twitter sounds hopeful :

Wender @ wender31       July 24

Kenny Cunningham began the process to obtain VISA to travel to NZ where he played with the Wellington Phoenix

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Some Costa Rican fan opinion on the Cunning Man move:

Kenny Cunningham arregló en Australia y no jugará con Saprissa. Es mejor irse a un país con un futbol mediocre y que pagan bien, que quedarse en un equipo mediocre, digo, campeonato mediocre y con salarios bajos.

Kenny Cunningham arranged in Australia and will not play with Saprissa. It is better to go to a country with a mediocre football and paying well, than stay in a mediocre team, I say, in a mediocre and low-wage Championship.

Personally, after my initial week of "WTF??" when he first started commenting, I've grown to like the lad. He has a sense of humour, and his new 'balls' rhetoric promises for some very funny banter during the upcoming season.

I find it humorous that you find him humorous. He's like the new mate that was around for a while until everyone realised his chat was shit and repetitive. From then on he was just a pest. nufc do you run the Ernie Merrick twitter account?

And hype it a bit more. But they did say "team announcement" so it should be somewhat significant news

This Costa Rican commentator was right yesterday then (they're 18 hours behind us):

Wender @ wender31       July 24

Kenny Cunningham began the process to obtain VISA to travel to NZ where he played with the Wellington Phoenix

AND THIS ONE HAD IT RIGHT TOO::

Juan Ramon Miranda Hidalgo

Wednesday

Kenny Cunningham arranged in Australia and will not play with Saprissa. It is better to go to a country with a mediocre football and paying well, than stay in a mediocre team, I say, in a mediocre and low-wage Championship.

I reckon it's a great signing and he's going to be one of the best imports in the A-League this season.
Current Costa Rican international (sitting second in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying) coming off a Gold Cup quarter-final just days ago.
Played in the Copa Libertadores, the South American club championship, for his Bolivian team, the Strongest earlier this year against Brazilian powerhouse Sao Paulo etc.
Highest status player to ever sign for the Nix in my books.
Will be good for Carlos to have a countryman to keep him company and make it more likely both Costa Ricans will stay around for a while. Always works better when you have two imports who speak the same language etc. (Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa at Spurs late 70's)
Yes, we have our own Ardiles and Villa pair now !!!

so one goal a bit under every six games for Kenny Cunningham (172cm, 72kg)

Brockie, Ifill, Husygems, Cunningham

Pick any three, plus carlos up front.  Maybe the old guys share time.

Still no natural striker or strong aerial presence.

But looking useful overall, if not that quick overall.  If Cunningham is the quickest he'll complement any of the other three well

nice signing, maybe not sensational, but should be solid or better

Fenton gets to play at RB, Boyd's going to have a quiet season

where do you spend the next bigger bucks, LB or better DM, or just look for a range of developing talent and hope a couple come off.

Has to be DM.We got owned through the midfield last season, imo. That way Siggie won't have to keep charging out of position (as much)

May also be a portent that Costa Rica will invade the Kermadecs in a few years time.

We will have to retaliate by sending a taskforce of ex- America's Cup yachts or the Cook Straight ferry.

Yeah, he's a midfielder for sure who doesn't score heaps of goals - though if you look at his record season-by-season here, he's scored 15 goals in 59 games the last three seasons (about a goal every four games):
but on a lighter note, as Irish supporters have said, "there's only two Kenny Cunninghams" and it's the Costa Rican one who's scored more goals:

THERE ARE ONLY TWO KENNY CUNNINGHAMS
PJ Browne April 11, 2013 Football

We thought there was only room in the world of football for one Kenny Cunningham but it turns out we were wrong.

There’s the Kenny Cunningham we all know and love.

And there’s the Costa Rican Kenny Cunningham that plays for The Strongest in Bolivia. He’s already got one goal in just four appearances for The Strongest, chances are that he will soon have scored more goals for The Strongest than our Kenny managed in his entire career.

No word yet on Costa Rican Kenny’s eyebrows though.

Now that would be a coup. Would fit perfectly into our team. Would relegate Manny to the bench. (I don't think Manny is good enough to be a DM in the A-League anymore)

    Can't see it happening, though.

Anyone else think this is a big coup?

Hard to say without having really seen him play. On paper he looks about the same as Hysugems. However I do think we are overloaded with attacking players. Hopefully he is quick, if it turns out he isn't I would declare it a waste assuming we keep the rest of the current squad. I think we desperately need one or two high quality box-to-box midfielders more than we need anything else.

Quality signing but I share your sentiments. We are overloaded in the front court now.

If you take keeper, back 4 and a DM as a minimum, that leaves you 5 spots. You would like to think 1 would NEED to be a box to box midfielder and be a link. If not, you then have to shoehorn in Brockie, Ifill, Stein, Hernandez, Cunningham (wide pacey winger Merrick described him as), Boyd, Bertos into the 5 spots left. When you take into account that the obvious starters are not known for their defensive workrate and we are shoehorning a young inexperienced kid from the strike force to fullback, I am actually quite concerned about our ability to defend. I know you have to score more goals to win, but if you can't stop the opposition, you are in essentially a mentality that 'stuff stopping them, we'll just outscore them'. Good sides do both.

    Also we need a LB.....

That aside, a quality signing and well done to the club. Now do we still need to trial Tom Jackson, yet another striker?

Reposting this away from the Kenny thread as it probably has more relevance here.

Manny > Lia. I would be quite happy with a Manny & McKay combo.
