Caira would be a bit of a disappointment IMO. Would definitely not be putting any money on McKay though.

I reckon its going to be cancellation of CCM game in Rotorua. Will post details in pre-season thread.

Unsure. Building suspense for bad news seems like a dumb move.

Allegedly

My cousin's girlfriend's flatmate saw Ernie Merrick with Matt McKay at the airport and McKay was signing a piece of paper...

They are going to have to make an announcement on the game because as it stands CCM that plays in the HAL, not sure if there are other CCM teams around, have said they are not coming. Could be a change in opposition or CCM have some contractual obligation they need to hold up.

RadioSport saying Phoenix to announce latest signing... so it's a player... unless they're doing a Perf? lol

Would Matt Thompson be an option for midfield? from what ive heard he is still a free agent

According to soccer stoppage time Dura was in Ernie's ear to bring in Thompson but Ernie is put off by Thompsons advanced age of ... 30

At the right price I think he would be a good player for the team.

Yeah sounds like a lot of what Ernie wants to do is rejuvenate the squad rather than bringing in guys over 28.
We have enough leaders and experienced heads in the squad, but lack the players in the next level down who will step up in the near future. Like the 23-26 year olds

Matt Thomson IMO is the type of player we are looking for in midfield. Surely if he is a free agent it wouldn't cost the earth, assuming no-one else is interested.

I'm hearing it is Caira on a 2 year deal..

So is Caira really better than Lochhead? From all reports - no.

Worryingly, from reports, he doesn't seem to be fighting for his place that hard either. Can anyone else comment - someone who's actually seen him play?

Meh, I'm willing to back Ernie with this one. He knows what he wants and obviously sees it in Caira.

Hmm he is moving clubs in order to get more first team footy so in essence that is him trying to get more game time.
He seems more mobile than Lochy, less experienced but will improve.
Think he probably is better than Hogg / Rowe - or maybe a mix of the two

It is well known that the best LB in this country is Tony Lochhead. So that's not a huge sak.

Matt McKay is the same age (30).

I can see what Ernie is doing in getting a younger squad in and building it. Good on him.

Something that I think Feverish or El Grapadura mentioned, we signed both our starting CBs on 2 year deals and both are of similar age. That would imply that both would be done at about the same time. You can generally look around and find 1 starting CB but 2?

Hmmm.

We do have 2 CB backups.

Of the little bit I've seen of Adams, I personally think he has the potential to jump Boxall in the CB pecking order.

Also I think Dura has the aspects of a CB who can probably play on quite a bit longer - whereas I would have to say Siggy's time will draw to an end sooner imo. So we may not be left in the dark and lose 2 CB's at once

I would even go a step further and say that it's possible Adams could jump Siggy. He just seems to fit Ernies style so much better. He's very good on the ball, composed, and distributes from the back calmly and effectively. Siggy on the other hand tends to lack the skill and composure to play the possession based philosophy that Ernie wants to play imo. On the other hand, we might even see Boxall jump Siggy this season. I wonder if the Dura-Siggy monopoly of central defence may be coming to a close under Ernie.. on the other hand, Ernie may not think Adams is up to A-league level yet and the same could apply to Boxall, who knows..

Did Hogg and Rowe ACTUALLY trial for the Phoenix..........I mean .......invited, watched and talked to by Ernie??????
If they did trial.....what were there short comings and reason they were let go as Caira turns up for a couple of days and gets a TWO year contract = must be VERY good? So what of and where are Hogg and Rowe now?
World Cup next year and a very big game looming in Wellington before hand. Lockhead 32 (best years far behind him) is our only professional left back in the country who'll be playing second fiddle to Caira = not playing.
Very underwhelming signing.........looks like a 'deal' to me.

If this is a conversation about who should play LB for the AWs then I don't see how it's connected to who the Nix should sign. We are a professional club competing in a professional league, not a training group for kiwi players who aren't good enough to get a contract anywhere else. If Caira's better value than any other option I'm glad we've signed him.*

Who should be LB for the AWs qualifiers is a whole different debate.

Fair enough, point taken but you only confirm us as just another Aussie team who happens to be based in Wellington.
NZF have been more than supportive of the Phoenix and I'm bl**dy sure us Kiwis would prefer to get behind our team with at least a few Kiwis in it....

the nix are not an nz development team. We are first and foremost a team representing wellington in the a-league. The spinoff is that nz players get a better chance to play professional football.

I get your general point but if we don't sign players based on their value to the club then we risk getting left behind by the rest of the league. How many more seasons like last could we sustain before the club folded? Is it better for NZ football to have a team that is 50% kiwi playing out of NZ in a pro league or no professional team in NZ at all?
We'll always have some kiwis because each club can only have 5 foreigners and we are the only one where kiwis don't count as foreign. And we've got the FSE which should help develop kiwi talent too. We shouldn't have to sign a player just because it will help the All Whites.
