If we could have a marquee I would want Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, he is a great player even at 34 years old (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatoliy_Tymoshchuk). He is a defensive midfielder with a great long range shot. He would be perfect!

Interesting discussion. But would WSW be attracting their mammoth support without 1. winning lots of games and 2. doing it with imports. No. The Phoenix get one chance now Herbert's gone. Only winning will reignite the Phoenix club, and you always have to ask yourself what would you do if it was your money (as an owner). Kiwi players will get their opportunity regardless if they're good enough. If the objective becomes developing Kiwi talent above anything else, then NZF should be paying for it. I'm personally hoping they appoint an Oz coach with connections to get the right Oz players here. The need to get back to the old fortress thing at the Cake Tin is a given, but this new squad need to lift the bar away from home with mentally hard and tough customers that won't give a damn yard. We won't do that with a Kiwi player development focus. That's why our young guys tend to do so well when they move to oz clubs. The bar is just so much higher.

Agree that success on the field - with predominantly non-NZ players if necessary -  is the main requirement, rather than expecting too much from developing local players. The few professional-standard players developed in these shores tend not to hang around long anyway but go on to sign for Aussie (Rojas, Barbarouses) or UK (Howieson, Payne) or North American outfits.
The Nix might do well to take note that the two currently successful Welsh clubs in English football, Swansea and Cardiff have few Welsh players and tend to look for the best managers available rather than employing Welshmen. (Cardiff: two Welsh managers in the last thirty years  and they only lasted three years in total) Their crowds in recent seasons are amongst the best in the history of Welsh football clubs...
Cardiff City: most first team players are English, then Scottish, with Craig Bellamy the only Welsh first-teamer.
Avge home crowd: 22,476 so far this season
Swansea City: 20,400 (ground capacity)
Swansea City: only three Welshmen in the first team squad (Williams, Davies appear regularly and Taylor, three apps); the majority are English and then other European nationalities.
Parallel problems to the Nix with eligibility for the Confederation club tournaments - in the Welsh case, the English FA have been the main obstacle, with UEFA in favour of Welsh club participation in European tournaments. UEFA have admitted Swansea to next season's Europa League, the first Welsh club to thus qualify by winning an English competition, this season's League Cup (Swansea previously qualified for Europe by winning the Welsh Cup but UEFA no longer allow that):
In recent years, with Cardiff on the verge of a place in the Premier league, doubts have been cast on the opportunities for Welsh clubs playing in the Football League to qualify for European competitions. The FA had previously stated that they would not nominate Cardiff for a place in Europe should they earn one on the grounds that they don't have the option. However their words were contradicted by a UEFA spokesman saying that Cardiff could play in Europe as European countries are allowed to nominate teams even if they don't play within its boundaries, UEFA president Michel Platini later pledged his support to Cardiff should the FA refuse them entry to European competition, commenting: "If England don't do anything, we will."
FIFA should clearly force the Asian Confed to come in line with UEFA and allow a club like the Nix from outside the national territory of the league they participate in,  to  qualify for Asian club competitions.

Having him and Totori at the same time would be the biggest waste of our import slots since we,  well, signed Totori...

Chen would rival that. I think Krishna would spent more time kicking players than anyone else. Off the ball, he is quite a dirty player from what I have seen and its a shame because I think he is better than Totori (but again not good enough)

I was going to use Toto as my example, but the most recent waste of an import slot is Totori.

Anyone know anything about Mario Bilen?. Playing CB for Auckland City in the OCL. 6 ft 3 inch CB comes from Croatia first Div has had plus 20 games for Croatia age group teams. Nix needs a Croat...would make El Grap happy!

Ramon seems to have a good scouting network....turns up some interesting imports. That Spanish holding midfielder from last??? year who went to the Ukraine was real class. Would have made an excellent A-League player IMO. Can;t remember his name.

Maybe the Nix should hire Ramon as their import consultant

Should hire someone for serious scouting/recruitment IMO.

You are referring to Andreu right? Saw him play twice, didn't rate him. Played like he was on holiday.

Andreu Guerau is still on holiday (according to the chap I spoke to b4 the City v Waitak O-League game, who was pivotal in bringing out ACFC's latest, Mario Bilen) - still in Spain at Racing Santander (since transferring from Legia Gdansk and b4 them Dinamo Tbilisi) but yet to play a game!

PS Ramon may have the Spanish connections but it's ACFC's board plus members plus supporters who have the Croatian connections.

Colosimo, Thompson, Fred & Bolton all released by Heart.

Id maybe take Thompson or Colosimo if I was desperate

almost 13 years ago · edited almost 13 years ago · History

I reckon Thompson would be a decent pickup. Colisomo would only be an option as a last resort, he's no better than SIggy or Dura, despite the poor form of Siggy this year.

 Colisomo? no thanks.

almost 13 years ago · edited almost 13 years ago · History

At 30, Thompson isnt going to be getting any better, but he is the kinda player we need - an engine in midfield and a bit of leadership. Would have been an ideal Tim Brown replacement.

as much as i enjoy watching Colosimo play and would of loved him to play for us a few years ago, hes not what we need now. he would just be more of the same, but Thompson wouldnt be the worse signing we could make...

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

And Nick Kalmar has been offered a new contract at Heart. Not many proven HAL midfielders available.

Thompson would be a good solid pickup as a squad player, could do a job for us in midfield. Experianced A-league player, an Aussie and still talented and still only 30.

This announcement that Heart is shedding players illustrates a conundrum for the Nix. Over the coming weeks more and more clubs will be ditching players as they sort out their rosters. Trouble is we are probably at least a month away from having a coach appointed and in the mean time players will become available....we won't be able to stake a claim for any potential signing until everyone else has picked over the scraps.

if the club were clever they could enquire to him and start the ball rolling so once the new coach has been found he can make a call, but already be a step into the negotiation process..

oh wait, the first 5 words of this post probably make it irrelevant

Would definitely take Thompson

Do they know people who are linked to the underworld who tell them things?

almost 13 years ago · edited almost 13 years ago · History

I would take Thompson in a heart beat if we couldnt get miller. Him, Carlos and Manny would be a nice quality midfield with balance. It would also allow us to hire an import at right back. Or else ship manny there and use the import for the third midfield spot.

I like Thompson - he's got goals in him and seems like a good guy too.

I've always seen Thompson as a slightly better Tim Brown.
Maybe not as hard working but can match the goals.

Donkey. Has bounced around Croatian lower divisions the past few years, as well as playing in Bosnia and Albania. Had one semi-decent season in 1. HNL with Slaven Belupo, the rest of it has been distinctly unimpressive.

There's always a reason you end up playing semi-pro in New Zealand isn't there?
