Phoenix Transfer Speculation 2013/14

Looks like Ernie will either hold onto this spot and use it if he needs to later in the season or use it on Tobias Berstch. From what I saw on the weekend, I wouldn't be disappointed if Bertsch claimed the final import slot. I think he would definitely push either Lia or Manny out of the team. He looks like a solid and reasonably skillful box to box midfielder.

So I'm guessing we've all given up on the foreign DM signing?

It does feel like Bertsch will get the spot. He would be on a minimum wage, so if a quality player did become available during the January transfer window he might be able to be released (on paper) and join TW.

I'm not quite so convinced by Bertsch. I think Rufer looked quite a bit better with the ball in the same position, and even in tackling he was no worse. I think he would likely get a contract except for his visa status, but I don't really see him playing much of a role unless there are injuries. So I don't think he will get a contract this season.

Agree. Bertsch was OK, but Rufer is shaping up as potentially being in a different league than the other young newies.

Okay so most people agreed Alex Smith was a decent enough player, just didn't warrant an import slot. Is Tobias the new Alex Smith?

Hadn't thought about it in those terms. I was firmly in the good enough but not as a visa player but that was after seeing him for one season. I haven't seen anything of Bertsch, so unable to judge if he is good enough.

I would rather we use the last visa spot for someone that can contribute from day 1 but willing to give Bertsch a chance if Ernie can't find someone who can.

Yep. Wouldn't of been overly happy having Smith even if he didn't take up a import slot.

that goes ditto for Totori - both needed to be cleaned out before this season started and Ernie has done just that.

He might have more potential, but I think Alex Smith was better.

Alex Smith was a "full" import slot. I guess Bertsch is more like a backup, Ernie will not fill the slot to be flexible, good for the club, not so good for the player. But he is part of the FSE, maybe he gets a chance when the Alll Whites are playing or we have some injuries.

I reckon bertsch will be signed if we dont find an Int DM in Jan - assuming its another year or whatever till he has doesn't count as an import. Else maybe before then

Would rather see Tim Payne/Cam Howieson come in on loan anyhow.

My opinion on Bertsch signing depends on 2 things - his potential and how long til he gets residence. I don't mind him taking up an import slot if he'll be good enough to be starting and better than any kiwi/Aussie options by the end of the season, or if he'll be a kiwi next season. If Ernie isn't going to use the import slot otherwise, I say go for it. But if we give him a season of training and he's still not good enough to start and not a kiwi, what then? Seems like a waste to invest in him now only to cut him loose in a year to free up an import slot

surely import slots have to be either in the starting 11, or pushing dam hard for it. otherwise we could be paying a kiwi kid to train with the squad yea?

Yeah import slots should definitely be starting players. The exception with Bertsch though is that he is still very young and Ernie could see him as the best young player in the country at this stage to fill that role. There is also an argument that suggests he has a lot of potential and can develop even further given his young age.

yip but if he will be a kiwi kid in the next 12 months, and we aren't going to use the spot otherwise, then why not?

Exactly. If Tobias develops into a better-than-A-league player in a couple of years and we didn't sign him when we had a spot free then people will complain that we didn't. I know everyone thinks the import slots should be reserved for definite starters but realistically in a salary capped league that might not always be possible, especially if we aren't using the marquee spot. The best balanced squad we can get for our budget won't always have 5 starting imports. A lot of imports are gambles and flop anyway

Might both be available next season anyway. Shame they are stuck playing U21 again

Very unlikely that their clubs would send them on loan out here. They will want both players playing for lower division clubs closer to home for logistical reasons.

I think they may be in the final year of their contracts, so TV is meaning they may be released.

Imo it was important to have spots free so that we had room to move the squad around a bit, rather than just about cutting Smith. If we could have said "hey maybe we'll have a spot for you in six months time, maybe we won't, we won't pay you in the interim but you should stick around just in case" then perhaps that would have worked, but clearly Smith wasn't going to take that deal.

Correct thanks RR. I'd be excited to see how either would go in the A League TBH

That's a very good clip. Very impressed that as a sponsor, they can put themselves up for a bit of laugh (cause some of that pronunciation was hilarious) but also make it a fun clip and educate the fans.

Unless you can show me a 20 year old kiwi who is the spitting image of Stiffler?
Crazy good photo-shopping skills in the photo in that story too.
