What's the deal with A-League transfer windows - does one open at the start of January?

Past two seasons, it was 14th Jan - 14th Feb. I assume it will stay the same this season.

I hear Jason Hicks's left foot got a PhD in sociology from Princeton

PS Albert Riera trained as a medico. So does that make every ball he plays a 'hospital pass'?

Only a paramedic, so while he can't give us a magic pill, he should be able to administer the midfield a kiss of life.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Hasn't mentioned anything on his twitter feed about anything as of yet.

I would hope Ernie does have a look at him.

Almost certainly but we don't need another set of older legs. Can see  Sydney picking him up or maybe even a cut price deal with the Roar, as his family moved back to the GC.

Agree with you Ryan.

I'm loathe to call him done but you have to wonder with his injuries and now lack of goals when he does play, if he is not an NZ version of Paul Ifill.......

I think the main problem we have is an out-dated squad of players. The league is growing and we aren't growing with it. So, out of the current squad who do you think is not up to it?

Cunningham

Bertos

Adams

Lia

Hicks

Huyseguems

Caira

Reira (as an import)

Bring in Chris James and we'll be sweet!

So you don't feel we improved as a squad from last year i.e. grew with the league.

Is that what you are saying?

No use looking across the squad - that'll take care of itself - most of Herbert's leftovers won't get new contracts.

The problem is the Phoenix can't get quality Oz or import midfielders. Or should I say it's been hard for this club to get quality midfielders come to Wellington to live. (Hernandez excepted, but no-one else wanted him presumably.) They ask for more dough, and that's the end of it. So Ernie was forced to go to the ASB Premiership, and we get Hicks and Reira. They are nowhere near this new A League standard. Like many here, have been involved in football while living in Oz, and the technical quality of players next level down is way superior over there.

If I was an owner, I'd be encouraged by the youth setup - and potential of Ridenton and Rufer in particular, when they are ready. But that's a wee way off. Problem is crowds are going be down round 3k if we lose next weekend. I seriously would sign a marquee or guest player. The Phoenix are rapidly losing their fizz (crowd appeal), and you are not going to see the best of Hernandez with players like Hicks, Lia and Reira around him.

Sydney FC reject paying Ibini's Chinese club the $65,000 they want for him to go out on loan. So he's still looking.

Not many options out there for attacking mid fielders for Merrick. Sign James or get Keat on loan?

I don't want to get a reputation as Debbie the Downer, but I really predict (a) Chris James will be signed; (b) he'll be a flop.

I'd probably say we have an 80% chance of signing a flop, but at least we have seen Chris James play. Can't say more than that for many other signings we have made.

James has been in contact with the club, and Durante

What if Ricki signed him?

Three for me, and two for them.

Chris James was actually one of our better players for the AW's. We could do worse.

Yeah but this was against Mexico, playing alongside Michael McGlinchey, a player regarded as one of the A-League's best. We have to sign a Kiwi or Australian seeing we wasted an import spot on Albert Reira so Chris James is the obviously solution.
