Phoenix Transfer Speculation 2013/14

He beat out most of Australia and New Zealand'e best in the Nike challenge earlier in the year and has been well-regarded for a long while.  The club have had him in for weeks and made the decision to sign him it's not a knee-jerk 'want' signing.

I think Ryan and News just answered the question.

If you saw him play at Rotorua, his signing is an absolute no-brainer. He is too good to let go somewhere else, whether it be to the US, Europe or Australia. Every chance he'll turn into a Rojas and [this time] generate a bit of income for us when transfered. This nursery of NZ talent could end up quite lucrative if they play it right. From identifying the right talent, signing them and making it worth their while to be part of the club and therefore not be tempted by anmywhere else.

No visa spots, too much money and we don't need another CB.

No thanks. Just because he's a 'name' doesn't mean he will make a difference.

Fair enough too. Clapham's got the goods and should have been signed years ago.

yay hicks. boo clapham, that ship has sailed.

tbh if Ernie was here 2 years ago, going by the signings he has made recently - Clapham most likely would've been signed.

maybe maybe not, surely if he wanted clapham he would have signed him now. 2 years is going to make any difference.

so what does hicks bring our squad numbers up to now? do we have ernies magic 22?

and also, from a "Dads army" team last year, this year we seem to be more "rug rats"

I think Hicks is a decent signing - overall he's made a positive impact and earned the opportunity. He gets caught too often in possession and gives the ball away too much but I put that down to him adjusting to the speed of thought required in the A-League compared to the ASB P - he has and, I think, will continue to get better as he adjusts.

I think Ernie has done bloody well getting value for money out of the salary cap. Given another off-season to make further adjustments to the playing roster / salaries I think he'll have the squad in great shape.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Probably a pointless thought but I wonder what talent might have been unearthed from the ASBP a couple of years ago if RH had taken a punt?

Jesus wept guys, RH is gone. Stop beating the dead horse.

You just get the feeling looking at our squad that there are a few players on silly money for what they are contributing

Hicks is #22, we still have 1 more spot to fill in the roster.

And when does that need filled by? Wonder if we will take another NZU17 player, or give a contract to one of the guys that had been around the squad anyway like Hamish Watson, Justin Gulley etc..

It doesn't. The minimum squad number is 20, we reached that with Riera.

Transfer window closes on the 31st I think?

Oh right, so a squad of 20-23. Makes sense. Remember Ernie wanting to keep that spot for an ASB Prem bolter anyway.

Has he ever had a look at Adam Thomas? As in invited him to trial?

Ernie has kept him in the FSE, so still must be in with a shot. A strong ASB Premiership season can only help his cause.
