Phoenix Transfer Speculation 2013/14

I'm a little confused about the whole sherminator situation. He is injured is he not, so the club must have incredible faith in him as a player because most would just be sent home if it were any other club. Does anyone know how good he is? has anyone actually seen him play in australia other than Ernie/scouts?

Ok just numbers - how many players have we. How many is max.  And do you consider we are close to salary cap. These FAX will determine if this thread is closed for the season.  Drink more guys!

Currently have a roster of 18. I think from memory 23 is the maximum but we generally operate on a squad of 20 (which is the minimum squad size) as if allows us to recruit within the Salary Cap. This is also due to the cost of employing 3 extra players that are not getting any regular game time in our non-exsistant youth league side.

I don't trust a word what they say about the cap. Leo has taken a drastic pay cut. Lochead has been shredded, Paston is gone. We have a couple of young ausis as replacements and four players on youth rates. The numbers don't add up

18 with Sherman to be one and a DM to be the other. Ernie has said he will go larger.

I suspect the cuts that AP mentions will be offset by Carlos and KC. They wont be on an ACFC Thursday night feed or coaching money. The space for a 5th import not signed... There is money there but I would think once we go past number 20, we are onto scraps with minimum salary (which is fine as they are more likely training fodder)

Re - Sherman. I dd say earlier this week that you don't keep an injured guy around to oversee his treatment unless you look to sign him. You ship his ass home and say come back when you are fit and try again. I'd say likely is to be signed.

Rufer made it 19 signed, gun Euro DM will be #20 and utility player possibly #21.

Sherminators club is under the impression he has been offered a contract, subject to fitness. The club have been running his rehab program, so must see him as a potential signing. A QLD based guy I talk to on twitter seems to rate him but it is a big step up from QLD state leagues to A-League. It sounds like he can play both sides of defence, so that would help provide cover for the squad.

JV is right on 18 incl Rufer

but certainly looks as if Sherminator is likely and provides that cover.  That also suggests the budget left after Carlos and Kenny is needed for the DM, so FB cover has to be a cheaper option.  Like Ernie says, it's just a matter of scoring more than we leak.  Reckon our CBs could have a busy season covering FBs.

"The squad list currently sits at 18, with several players likely to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Returning Captain Andrew Durante is joined by 2012/13 team mates Ben Sigmund, Glen Moss, Jeremy Brockie, Paul Ifill, Leo Bertos, Vince Lia, Tyler Boyd, Louis Fenton, Stein Huysegems, Manny Muscat and Michael Boxall.

2013/14 will see Costa Rican strikers Carlos Hernandez and Kenny Cunningham joined by Australian players Lewis Italiano, Reece Caira, and Kiwi youngsters Luke Adams and Alex Rufer.
Don’t miss out on what promises to be a season of excitement both on and off the pitch!"

Funny I though we were at 19 too but I assumed I was wrong when I read someone write 18 so I went with that.

They forgot about Cam Lindsay, tho that isn't hard to do.

I hadn't read that email, hmm should we take something from that? Don't think he has played much of the pre-season.

Agree. It seems they have kept their eggs in the basket to buy the DM they need hence the young 'cheap' signings. I doubt that Caira, Adams and Rufer are going to cost more than the minimum. I have no problem with that and I guess you have to get the best you can for that minimum and it would appear they have on face value. Sherman would be another minimum I guess keeping the cap space for the DM.

I'm not sure I agree with the Ernie's face value philosophy of trying to outgun the opposition because title winners (and title games) can defend and score. It's like we have decided we are going to smash 400 off 50 overs every game and daring opponents to chase us. It's a risk and reward concept but then you need the horses to achieve that. We have Brockie and his record is freakish goals.. After that..

Ernie hasn't promised to win the title this season, just to make finals

He can't avoid a few weaknesses, but if the kids do develop and the key signings come off strongly, including that certain starter Cunningham ;) we could over-achieve

Rueing the fact we couldnt somehow nab Engelaar; hoping he will be a dud for Heart. Remember seeing him for the Netherlands a few years ago and he was always entertaining to watch play.

Hold on. The club has called Kenny a striker. All JV's earnest arguments have been on him being a midfield/half !!

I reckon that's a decent stab. I'm lazy but what do your hypothetical figures add up to and what's left. Moss would be $150k along side Sigmund

Cap is 2.5 mil, but we can pay $150k outside the cap to 3 homegrown youth players (all the kids but Caira qualify). AucklandPhoenix has spent 2.36 mil of it.

So there is in theory 290k left (if we take the figures as stated)

Actually when I look at that team, I think if I could release players today, I'd ditch Lindsay. I'm comfortable with the rest. Last year I could have tossed a few.

I had excluded 3 kids @ 40k before saying 2.36 mil, so only 140k. AP's figures must be higher than reality for some players. We will need at least 200-300k to get the sort of box to box midfielder we need.

If we do call Moss at 150k, we are up to $2480,000. That will give is 170k to play with based upon Ryan's youth policy. I can't however think I may over estimated a few of them, Brockie, Cunningham and Manny. If any one knows any better jump in.
