SST is saying another club is watching how Thompson goes for us in these NSW games and may grab him before we do. But I think they may be his agents, so take with a big pinch of salt.

Signs of desperation signing Thompson - he was very good a couple of years ago, but was poor last season . I guess he's still a better option than Manny or Lia.

I believe he's played right back at a pinch previously too?

Not a signing that will push us forward us a club, but a decent depth filler.

He was garbage in Hearts midfield last year. Saw plenty of their games first hand and he was consistently bad.

But apparently he's a nice guy.

Heart were only marginally less shambolic than us last year. No one shone. Thompson's got a proven track record, is a good team man, runs his guts out, and knows how to score. Pity he's not a couple of years younger though. I can see our physio getting a lot of overtime this season.

We've cut Lochhead, Smith, Sanchez, Paston... not to mention Pantelis, and bought in a whole bunch of youngsters (other than Thomspon and Hernandez). I'd be surprised if our average age hasn't come down significantly over the off-season.
I'm pretty happy about Thompson, as someone to bolster our squad, and provide some depth and possibly cover in midfield. Would be disappointed if he signaled the end of our recruitment though.

Sanchez and Smith were reasonably young. I doubt the average age would have come down much, particularly of the starting lineup, remember all the players we've retained are a year older.

It sounds like we haven't signed him yet, just has a trial game. I'm a bit underwhelmed but we do need a couple more midfielders.

No.  There are plenty I just dislike because they don't play for us.  C*nts are limited to a select band.  Although I have mellowed.  I don't even dislike Archie.

For those interested:
Average age of squad last year at beginning of last season:   26.57 years

Average age of current squad  at beginning of upcoming season:   25.42 years

As RJ points out, all our players are one year older, so to drop it down by a year is pretty significant.
Also need to remember last year we brought in Boyd at 17. Think the year before would be even older

Yeah the season before last (11/12) was older again : 27.33 years

So we can see quite a shift coming in since the new owners have taken over

Don't apologise, just re-work all of those stats to show average age of the starting 11. It's the age of the guys on the pitch that really count (and you will have to assume a starting 11 for 2013/14).
Go forth young man and statify!

I'm not at all convinced on this.  If he is I'm not sure by how much. But an Aussie player in a position we don't have cover and not a ...grrr- that right back who was quick but not really any good..can't recall his name...type player

I just seem to recall Thompson actually scoring goals.

Who's next? Jobe Wheelhouse?

Said it before - would happily sign him up if he wasnt too pricey.

Thomson looks an ok addition, should be better than Lia.

I don't get the feeling that he'd be out of our price range given that he is currently playing in the NNSW Premier League in Newcastle for the Lambton Jaffas...

My 2 cents: Thompson would be a very nice addition to the squad.

Apparently Ernie has asked senior players whether they were OK or not for him to spend time in the Nix camp and they said yes - so that solves the perceived breaking of the no-cXXts policy.

Furthermore, he is the most-capped A-League player and is a championship winner which says a lot about his ability. Never underestimate what it means to have players who are used to winning games. This is something we as a team are certainly not very well acquainted with, and having players with a winning mentality sometimes really wins you games. And it's  good for the development of younger players.

I think if we signed Thompson he could well be be the best CM we ever had, maybe even better than Tim Brown!

I really hope his trial goes well and we sign him - this would add depth to our MF (and squad).

Just spoke to my father who reckons we'd be mad to pass up the opportunity to sign Matt Thompson and that he was furious with the Jest for letting him leave in the first place!

Yes please on Spoonley.

Looked good in his last A-league outing, and certainly not much worse, if at all compared to some of what is on offer over the ditch.

We have 2 keepers on the books, we don't need 3 other than when Moss is away and we can call up a back up.

Tie up a squad space and commit at least min salary on a player who will sit on the bench for 2 (or 3?) games when in the past we have been able to bring in cover when needed - 2 'keepers should be fine.

Yeah he's not having 3 keepers. Spoonley is just covering for Italiano until he gets back from VPL much like McPeake was for Spoonley now that he's signed for TW. I'd rather Spoonley over Italiano though...

Find myself agreeing with TV, from a NZ perspective I want to see another NZ keeper on the books. Don't completely trust Moss, haven't seen Spoonley do anything stupid recently...from a club perspective is Italiano going to push for a starting place?
