Phoenix Transfer - speculation (Part 1)

I notice Coveny's name isn't appearing much: are people assuming he will be back next season, or has he retired and I'm the last one to find out? I would've thought that, for all his sterling work this season, the time has come for Covs to hang up the boots. To me he has been a stopgap measure only, and would hopefully be replaced with a younger, more incisive striker next season.

I thought Coveny did alright this season. He was still pretty quick and he got through a power of work. Didn't score many, granted, but did win a few penalties and had a hand in setting some goals up. I think, due to his age, everybody is just assuming that he'll pack it in now.

As Joel Porter was one of the names being bandied around as a signing target, we can assume that we'll be looking at signing at least one striker for the new season.

If I Covs did retire I would give him a standing ovation, but I would be happy to see him give it one more go next season. We know he won't be a frontline striker but when we needed him he was a key member of the team and set up Smeltz for a couple of great goals.

Doesn't Cov have a clause in his contract with an option of having a coaching role.  Might be good to see the ol' warhorse to take the U20 players under his wing etc

I'd put money on Covs still being well and truly around next season.  He's still A-League quality, I just suspect he'll have a little less time once we sign another starting forward.

Interesting to hear Tony P on the radio this morning specifically mention going to Holland in relation to player recruitment. Rather than just a trip to Europe. As Frankie is not busy at the moment maybe he could stalk them around Europe?

If Smeltz was injured would you feel confident playing Coveny and Felipe/Costa or whoever up front? I think signing another striker for next season is a priority.
Edit: Although I wouldn't feel so bad if we had Leo Bertos as an option.WellyT2008-01-22 11:20:05

Yup. I wouldn't have any problems with Covs up front with Felipe or Costa

I think what a lot of you are forgetting is that not every player in your squad is going to be in the starting 11 (duh).  You need good squad members to possibly cover a few positions and be there to cover injuries and suspensions.  The main thing for that being managing expectations.

In terms of defenders, Christie is actually a midfielder and as long as he is willing to be a squad member, often on the bench then I would keep him.

Old, seeing as he is a young fulla should also not expect frequent game time, and in fact Id suggest he wouldnt have got much this year if Cleberson came through as well as if the Christie trial at RB worked.

Rees also might be happy to be a reserve seeing as all hed be doing otherwise is heading back down to the VPL (or whatever its called), but otherwise hed be the first defender Id cull (if we do get 2 CBs) as I think Old would offer more as the reserve, with his age and nationality.

So if we do get Durante and Sigmund as it sounds is fairly likely, youll have them plus Dodd in some good value competition for the CBs role which can only be good (and something the Phoenix have severely missed in their first year).  Also as Ive mentioned before, Dodd is listed as a RB, so I wonder if hes had experience there and he could possibly cover that.  He has tried to get forward a bit recently and hasnt looked too bad so with the freedom that RB gives him he may be worth a shot there.

I think Lia will be alright at RB too (at least he has pace, but dives in a bit), but would still look to sign a specialist.

Wed also need cover for Lochhead at LB for when hes away, injured or suspended.  Otherwise theyll have to switch to 3-5-2 again and I dont think thats good for consistency.

Midfield has been our strong point, and the only place where there has been competition for places.  Obviously a lot depends on pending retirements (Johnson, Aloisi), but really we dont need to acquire anyone (especially if we play with a 4-4-2).  Daniel, Brown, Filipe, Ferrante, Elrich, Lia and Christie, offer plenty of balance and with the likely signing of Bertos too, it is certainly an area we can rest easy about for the moment.

Up front, as has been mentioned, a bit will depend on how they see Covenys role.  If he is to play as back up to Smeltz and another striker (one of the major priorities, surely), then with Barbarouses and Draper showing promise too (and young so most likely happy to sit back and learn), there is no need for Brownlie.

In goal its a tough one.  I agree Im not sure how confident Id be of using Spoonley in a big match, if Moss was out, so we need to see more of him, but it really depends on Pastons feelings on playing second fiddle.  If hes happy to train and collect his pay check then no worries, keep him, but Id be wanting gametime and Im sure its pretty tough as a keeper, as you dont even get substitute opportunities.  Moss is definitely A-League class so all youre after is a reserve keeper.  Not worth going crazy over.

So this is how I see the squad panning out (or at least how I hope it pans out).

  1. Moss
  2. Paston
  3. Spoonley (y)
  4. Dodd
  5. Durante
  6. Sigmund
  7. Old (y)
  8. (A quality RB dont ya wish you had a database of players to specify a search on?!) (f Europe/Asia)
  9. Lia
  10. Christie
  11. Lochhead
  12. (A reserve LB, young) (y)
  13. Brown
  14. Ferrante
  15. Elrich (not marquee if doesnt accept then release and keep Johnson)
  16. Daniel (f)
  17. Filipe (f)
  18. Bertos
  19. Smeltz
  20. Coveny
  21. Barbarouses (y)
  22. Draper (y)
  23. (A marquee quality, non ancient (max 30yrs) striker) Phillips/Porter (f Europe/Brazil?)

I think it provides the balance of starting, reserve, backup, youth and experience.  Obviously the signings are fairly important but Ill leave that to the powers that be (satisfying my criteria of course!)

That is interesting.......................Ivan Vicelich??    The defenders in the dutch league (Eredivisie) are pretty no-nonsense/ strong in the air types.

Although it would be nice to have another Kiwi in the squad, i think we can do better than Ivan. I'd rather have Ivan 'aswell' as someone else rather than or someone else.

I was just wondering about Danny Hay and whether he (and the Phoenix) would be interested in a one year deal. At the start of the season he expressed some interest if he didn't have to live in Wellington. His wife had just had a child and he didn't want to make her move. The kid will be a little older by the start of next season and this would be his last chance of playing at a high level. I think he is still good enough and would provide good leadership if Aloisi doesn't re-sign. Maybe an option if the other defender rumours don't come to anything.

IMO Danny Hay is too slow for this level, he might have the nouse and leadership skills but i still think he will get stripped for a lack of pace.

Sigmund is a better bet, although siggy isnt as tall as Hay he has most if not all qualities to do well in the A-League , i think Sigmund is similar build to Newcastle centre back Jade North who seems to do well with the type of build he has.

signing 3 more players - LB possibly another youth???

Ta, yeah i reckon another youth.  Someone from the NZFC.  Or I see the youth league is (almost) underway, might be worth seeing what's coming through there.

Full squad size is 23 I believe.  Though there was talk of that changing with the A-League bringing in the youth teams?

Re: Vicelich, they may not be in Holland to sign him but could certainly use his opinion on players in the league?

True enough - Vicelich would be quality though - he was the stand out player in the recent All White prerformances - really held us togethewr at the back distributed well.

I think Cov's is on a 2 year deal so he'll be back.

No Rumour, just an option (I'm bored so scanning Wiki) - Spase Dilevski is a RWB (even covers LB) who used to play for the Roar but moved overseas and according to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spase_Dilevski) wants to come back to the A-League.
Anyone seen anything of him?  Worth signing?  He's young and was recruited by Tottenham at one stage so can't be too bad.
Get on to him Ricki - better he come here than Sydney or Gold Coast!

I'd like to see more of him, hard to judge on performances on matches against the island nations. He is currently playing in the dutch second string which certainly isn't a great standard

It would be great to see Ivan at the club...even if it was just to bring all his experience home...Is covs athletic flick at the near post there for goal of the season voting?

I still would vote Elrichs goal...but I thought that covs goal was class...

Unlikely I think, as he is an integral part of Celtic's strikeforce, (would cost a fortune too!)

Who knows? He's a quality finisher and quick. After the CWC, some clubs have expressed interest in signing him up. He can score goals, but if he gets starved of goals, can he set up goals for others? It would be hard to ignore him if they can't get a better and proven striker. He would qualify for as one of the four foreign players if they get him.

Getting an NZFC player in the Phoenix would be great for the credibility for the former, justifying the NZFC as a good developmental route for future Phoenix players. Hopefully Costa and Draper won't be the last.
