I guess the plan is to gradually increase the financial viability of the clubs and the profile of the league, and keep increases of the salary cap in line with such growth, to both keep clubs away from financial trouble and the competition relatively even. It's a long term project though, I would think.

This philosophy seems far to sensible and level headed for any football governing body to come up with.

I guess I'm swimming against the tide here, but I think Dodd has been one of our most consistent and reliable central defenders over two seasons.  Sure it was a mistake to play him in midfield, but he's really impressed me over both seasons.  He's always calm on the ball and attempts to play football rather than just kicking the ball upfield.  Ricki's certainly used him extensively in the last two seasons, and he must be doing something right if the rumour that Adelaide is interested in signing him is true.  If he does go, then I think we certainly need to sign another quality central defender, which will probably need to be an import.

From what Tony P said on the Radio yesterday regarding signing three front line players, 2 strikers and an a-m would suggest to me that Dodd has already agreed to resign or they are more than happy to let him go because they think McKain is c-b cover and maybe some of the youngsters they sign will be defenders. What are other peoples read on that?

Yeah Man_Utd_Fan, we definitely need a third specialist central defender as cover for injuries, suspensions, lack of form.  I think the best position for McKain is in midfield.

It has nothing to do with FIFA - the FFA set the 4 subs for the A-league in order to keep down the costs of travel for the clubs. Once the clubs are financially stronger, the number of subs allowed will be increased.

There is no one set rule on how many subs can be on the bench - different leagues and competitions have different rules. That's how you get 4 subs in the A-league, and 12 in a World Cup tournament game.

I think Diego would be a good signing. Hes an AM, and most of the Adelaide fans arent happy to see him leave. We should act soon before he joins a club like Sydney

Actually, he's our worst exponent of the hopefull kick upfield. Still want to see him re-signed though.

wtf?

FIFA have nothing to do with only 4 subs. It's an A-League rule, and a useless one. Most (if not all) of Europe has 7. FIFA competitions have 12 (all the squad).

I think the finals series has 5 (though it may be 7). It's more than 4, whatever it is.

There's no magic number of subs (according to FIFA).

No, mate I and many others are with you on this one. I couldn't stand the sight of Dodd last year, but since he's been placed at CB he's performed very well (given his level of skills). I think we don't need to invest in another CB at the moment. Dodd, Seamonster and Durante will do just fine. I'd concentrate on getting 2 strikers with bollocks+Cassio. Then, if we have any spare cash, I would get a young and promising Oz/NZ CB, someone to play when needed, gradually.

I think it's such a stupid rule. Screw financial issues and the like, I mean what do you think it will cost to a professional football team to book 1 extra seat on a plane?? nothing!
I find it awful how you are basically forced to bring on the bench 1 player for each position. One of them, of course, being the keeper - whom, let's face it, 98% of the times doesn't need to be played.

I think the subs should be increased to at least 5 or 6. That would be good for youth developement too. Let's say Kwasnik is out...why woulnd't you bring Costa AND Drapes along? The worst that can happen is that you're not going to use them. But the best that can happen is that for one reason or another they both get game time+match fitness+experience..

Dodd? Durante? McKain??? Mulligan has by far been the culprit of the worst long-ball play.

Just read somewhere that Jonas Salley is being let go by his club. He was one of the few who shone for The Knights, and Ricki tried to keep him.

But, as I recall, the on-again-off-again nature of the Nix's birth meant Salley didn't take the risk of being left without a club and jumped the ditch.

He's had limited game time this season, but looks good. Anyone else think he'd be worth an offer?

Don't need him. We need attacking players, bigtime

He's definitely a good player but I'd go for better and come back to him almost as a last resort (no disrespect to him intended).  Although, if you leave him too long he could get snapped up so we need to make up our minds quick.

Okay, okay, I won't mention Salley. Won't even think the word ' Salley' in my deepest, darkest moments. Ever again. The words 'Jonas Salley' will never again flow from my flashing fingers.

Im with you guys on this one. Dodd isnt the most skillful player in the A league but he's solid at the back..be a real shame to lose him to another club..better sign him up quick

Go Terry - make it happen !!

"Meanwhile, Serepisos said he was attempting to lure Brazilian midfielder Fred, who took part in three matches as a guest player this season on loan from DC United, to Westpac Stadium on a permanent basis."

Read that this morning. Now that would be superb, if he can get him here. Go on, Terry. Wave your wallet at him!

We can only hope... if we could get Fred back add a (top) quality striker, plus a not too shabby striker, then we'd be looking pretty solid for next year... and don't let the Dodd out!

So, with Diego's signing here's my understanding of our roster for next season - as it currently stands (could be not quite right e.g. Paston ?);

14 Phoenix players contracted by the club for next season and beyond are;

Muscat, Sigmund, Lochhead, Durante, Mulligan

Diego, Daniel, Brown, McKain, Bertos,  Ferrante, Lia, Hearfield

Costa

Current players remaining unsigned;

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF THIS SEASON:
#1) Mark Paston
#2) Jeremy Christie
#5) Karl Dodd
#8) Vaughan Coveny
#9) Shane Smeltz
#12) Richard Johnson
#15) Adam Kwasnik
#19) Greg Draper
#20) Glen Moss

Paston is a more than capable keeper.  We'd be silly not to sign him up quickly.  If we don't, we'd be unnecessarilt in a position of needing to find two quality keepers instead of just one.

I would suspect we'll definitely be letting Messrs Kwasnik and Johnson go and Christie will stay. I'd want to keep Dodd but suppose it depends on whether he wants to stay and whether or not he gets a better offer somewhere else.

TBH, I don't really have much of an opinion on Draper.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Draper will still be on the youth deal?

Kind of feel sorry for Christie. Because he can cover all over the place he never seems to get a start. Can we not fit Fred in as well as Diego? + potential striker marquee...

how many players is a squad?
