Saw U, honesty call, how many matches have you seen him play in the last 5 years?  That Wales game was a long time ago now...and he's struggled for game time at 2 MLS clubs now.

I haven't seen him play for anyone other than the AWs.  Appreciate the point about Dunedin, I saw him play down there too.  But that's not enough to get you a Phoenix gig.  I mean Mike McGarry is still running around down there

Cracking point, of course I've seen very little of him in recent years. Yes, "insert jokes about standard of Dunedin football here", but he was the stand-out in a Tech team that was competitive on a national level. And saying he's struggled for MLS game time is perhaps a bit unfair... he's played over 50 games in 3 seasons, that's a good "squad rotation" record at the least.

The fact he's been a part of the All Whites in the last couple of years, has got to say something at least. And I still think he's got a lot more in common upstairs with the likes of Siggie or Smeltzy, as opposed to the likes of Mulligan... my point is, I reckon he'd fit nicely into the phoenix, and he would genuinely make the most of a second chance.

...And, at the very least, would be cool to have someone 6'6" running around for us ;)

As cultured as Che Bunce's left foot and as profilic as John Lammers

Jade North excites me even less than Macallister. How North got anywhere near the Socceroos I still don't know. I'm probably being unfair I know but for a player so highly touted he has quite a talent for defensive disasters.

Would be keen for Smith and James to get trials...they couldn't be worse than Diego, Mulligan or Ferrante surely? And if they were at least they would have a chance to prove themselves...

Is Smith quick?

One thing I worried about watching the Hamilton game was the lack of pace in our squad. We have a lot of old players...and now no Costa to call on...

though admittedly team without Leo, Lochy and Timmy

Boyens> Old? or Old>Boyens? Would we want either back? Old had a good olympics and is surely improved...

They are not that standard that players coming in should aspire to.  They should be able to compete for a place in the first team or have some capacity to improve over time.  Giving NZers a chance for the sake of it is a waste of our time and theirs

well, we are going to have players like Dadi, Costa, Caceres and Diego who will have important contributions off the bench and can push for a first team place. No reason why NZ players who have pedigree but haven't had a great recent track record shouldn't be trialled for those squad places...

with all due respect to Chris James and Jared Smith, Dadi, Caceres and Diego all have far better track records than those two and are much better players than them

to be honest, I think we may be over analysing the things we have read.

1. A New Zealander. I'm not sure if it will neccesarily be a World Cup All White as that was never specified?

2. High calibre starting players maybe be, as someone said, more of  ploy for helping push for these signings to take place.

3. Most importantly for me, that all four players may not already be at clubs. Ricki may have used this as a reply, but it may not cover all our players and i wont be surprised if we sign someone off contract anyway.

I'm interested to see if we loan out any players? That could be part of what Ricki means when he spoke about negotiating with clubs?

Also, the Marquee spot could be very interesting. I won't be at all surprised if North is used as the aussie marquee. And the south american will probably be the marquee creative midfielder. I hope

I also have a feeling the kiwi will be the striker, I don't know if i want to see another asian striker

Crowther stays in Finland and Moss comes back? Didn't we say we might get three keepers as well?

Ok fair call. But Costa's contribution to the season was as important as Dadi's I think...

and Diego has been pants in the main. I'd just like to see Kiwi attacking players coming through and given a chance, no reason why they can't be given a sniff and if they're good enough they could come through from a squad place...

anyway...waiting with baited breath for the new signings announcements...

Yeah, if youre going to have fringe players who wont be getting as much game time as established starting players, they may as well be kiwi. No point getting a south american or whatever if hes only going to get the odd sub here and there, just for the sake of it.

Wouldn't you rather they not be Kiwi so that it leaves open the possibility of the Kiwi getting a contract elsewhere where they do play often so it's better for the All Whites? loyalgunner2010-07-15 12:23:23

So, even though they ruled Elliott out, "because he'd rather be overseas", he's flying into Welly JUST to be here at the All Whites parade..

I wonder if there's a little bit more than that to it than everyone's letting on...

Why would we get Elliott when we already can commit to securing mulligans future here in wellington?

I'm hoping the Kiwi is Chris James. He needs to get his career back on track. If he could stay fit, he'd be a good attacking Mid for us.

We are getting quite desperate if we sign Pavlova. He was easily their worst player against us last year and if it wasn't for him missing chances we wouldn't of won.

Didn't somebody say something similar about McAllistar he seems to be going alright to date, he wouldn't be trialling I am sure if Ricki didn't think he was suitable ??????

Just to clarify - is Jade North being considered as the 'Asian' or the 'Australian' that Ricki was talking about?

Assuming he's the Australian, is it still possible the Asian might be from Australia?

From the couple games Ive seen him play for the Nix so far, and even though only 'training games', hes looked very suitable.

Newcastle didn't keep him... apart from Bridges did you see how awful the strikers at that club were... and they released him.

My United contacts don't exactly sing his praises either.

Australia play in Asia but Australians are not Asian, they're criminals

Chris James and Jared Smith would be great. Should be able to get them on the cheap and they both have a huge point to prove. It's a risk but could work out positive for all parties concerned. Luis Garcia2010-07-15 15:03:28

They'd both be cheap. And have potential. I'm all for having as many New Zealanders in the team as possible, but they have to be good first. If they don't become starting material atleast we haven't paid top dollar for them like Mulligan.

We want to win the comp, have the best squad, get people coming along to see a winning team. If they are Kiwi and good enough, fine, but otherwise pass.

My only concern at present is that we are running out of time to get quality before the deadline of 1 Aug. Still need 3 signings.

But have done it before, and need to do it again  -  in Ricki I trust

(one more Ifill and we'd be as strong as anyone. Just hard on the nerves as the days tick by)

Jared Smith has played in the MLS, surely he's done something right before. Ofcourse if he's not good enough I don't want him. But he could be? Fingers crossed we get North, would be great boost for our defense.

This, although as far as I am concerned if they are Australian then just as fine.
