STuff article says that JJ has fallen through, disappointing

Sounds like DC United is after him. MLS is probably a bit more tempting than the A-League, especially given JJ is American-born, so I'd imagine that's why.

So much for 'four high profile signings'. Not happy, unless Ricki has something up his sleeve.

I can understand where youre coming from as 'high profile' would suggest popularity or a big name (ie. Henry or Fowler or someone), but they never said this. They said "up to four high calibre players", which would suggest more along the lines of talent and ability. You dont need to be heard of to be a good player.

We still need a decent left back.

I've had enough of seeing Tony getting beaten/caught out/make an error there... both for the Nix and Aw's pressure is placed on him.  He needs some decent competition to up his game irrespective of the potential of 3 at the back.

As to the Chilean, he played for some pretty decent clubs which I feel could hang the Nix out to dry on their day potentially; thus give him a trial to see what he's like
(TBH hopefully he cant be any worse then some of the other "Blooper" players Ricki has signed (Ricki is very hit and miss I think with signings)).

Damn JJ looked the business.

Have to sit back and wait then. To be honest, we have a good crop of star players. Need to build depth, speed and tactical options...centre back and forward the main ones you would think...

Viera must be training well then??

Well he's been hanging round for a few weeks so he must be doing something right. They'll want to see him in a game environment (ie Friday) to get a better idea.

Feel disappointed - wish I'd never heard about this JJ guy now!  You can't miss what you never knew about!

and high profile "heard of" players tend to be more expensive to hire than they may be worth!

Sign Clapham. Nuff said. A ginga in the middle of the park would surely be a good luck charm. Maybe on par with the headbandage?

"North is contracted to Tromso till the end of August but Durante said he was trying to gain an early release as temperatures plummet below -10."

Currently Tromso would be experiencing the midnight sun, 24-hour sunlight and temperatures in the mid 20's even up to 30 degrees. The season would end by the time it gets to -10 and 24 hour darkness.

Are you suggesting we lynch every new signing at the airport when they first arrive for good luck?

^^ Not for luck, but to see whether they're worthy enough to wear stripey.

Erm, probably not - lynching=death, and, I'll just take a wild guess here, that probably won't be conducive to good performances on the pitch.

Geez, if a man dies when you lynch him, then lynch him again and again until he gets used to it. Simples.

Seriously, though, I wonder what the thought from Phoenix HQ was about leaking various names before they were signed up.

Seriously?

Disappointed about JJ. North would be a solid signing but not excited about any of the other prospects.valeo2010-07-21 12:02:30

Hope the Phoenix have other players up their sleeve who we haven't been told about.  From Valeo's (and several others) reports on Pavlovich I'm not filled with optimism.

ahh my optimism has been well and truly crushed- serves me right for reading to much into that jj rumour

well, JJ hasn't signed for DC utd yet. So there's still hope. I guess the MLS rates higher than the A-League. Is Danny All-Twit still playing for DC by the way? If JJ signs with them and doesn't like the environment, maybe he will give us a call?

I'm very eager to hear about our new signings!

If we don't get Jade North then this will be a very disappointing off-season.

Heh.  I just went back a year in this thread.  You might recall some of these things from mid-July 2009:

  • Angst about never being able to replace Shane Smeltz
  • Angst about Joel Porter slipping through our fingers
  • Wild speculation involving improbably big names (Dwight Yorke!) and has-beens (Claudio Canniggia!)
  • Less wild speculation involving names like Putter, Potty, Krishna and Astroklaus
  • Riki stating that he was confident of signing a high caliber striker
  • Angst that he was running out of time to make any signings at all.

And despite all our angst, we started the season with some pretty damn good additions to the squad.

I think that Elliottt will be joining the Phoenix...i hope so

At the parade he brought his two sons.....

AND

I asked him if he was joining the Nix and he said "maybe, we'll wait and see" and then I was like "Simon, you will lead us to glory" and he smiled and made some small talk. He asked me and my friend if we were going to Boca/Phoenix games and we said we were and got season tickets and he was real chill. Seems like a great guy! Hope he joins us.

Best indication yet, I think. Sounds like he might be in talks. Hope so even if for a season.

been reading back the last few pages... when did ricki actually suggest the phoenix would adopt the same formation that we saw the all whites use?

Even if Elliott is not going to sign, he should at least 'trial' for the Nix against Bocas

Briefly caught the sport news on radiosport

North is unlikely to sign. While Ricki Herbet is keen on trialling Argentinian midfielder Roberto Carlos ... and what sounded like English creative midfielder George Chuter

Only just caught it and the last part I can't be 100% on.
