Just said North unlikely to sign. Nothing specific. Personally I would have said "North unlikely to head South" Or some sort of Jade/Greenstone pun. Bad news if it's true. We need a replacement for McKain.

I heard the bulletin an hour ago and didn't get the impression North was unlikely, maybe it has changed.

So (in summary) our goalposts move again:

Youth Options:
Pavlovic
Lovemore
Prattley
Spragg

Players:
AW - Si Elliotttt
Aus - Jade North
South American - Magno Vieira, Roberto Carlos (whatever)
England - Chris Shuker

I would be quite happy with that HN - the South American would be a gamble but a gamble we can afford to take.

Would like to see Lovemore picked up over Pavlova as he's a kiwi and Pav has already had his chance with Newcastle and failed.

Comments on Shuker from Tranmere forum:

But I feel let down by Shuker, an experienced and undoubtedly a talented player. He was included at the start of last season as one to watch in our division, true he picked up a bad injury. But after return has given nothing at all to the team. I find that very poor from a player who can deliver when he wants. Of course his injury[s] may have got the better of him but no comment has come out to that effect. So I have to assume that hes fit and as a senior experienced pro I feel entitled to expect him to have played a leading and productive role.
Other players have underperformed I admit but none with the ability of Shuker.

Sounds a bit like how the Palace fans felt about Ifill before he came here. Can be a good player but affected by injuries.valeo2010-07-21 17:24:49

Fair enough. He has to pack up his stuff before the A-League season starts. Look forward to seeing you in black and yellow, Si!

Re: North

Ricki talked about Jade not making up his mind. "It's up to Jade now." and then mentioned how he's keen on a move to China. Maybe we should get Smeltz to have a talk to him.

Perhaps it is a matter of making Wellington more appealing for women. How about shoe shopping discounts to Phoenix players' wives?

I may have missed it but wasn't there an Asian player in the mix - what happened to him ?

All a bit exasperating and disappointing - we seemed to have gone from world class players knocking on our door and Ifill and Greenies mates queuing up to no where fast.

A couple of weeks to season kick-off - mild panic starting to set in.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

A comment Terry made a few weeks ago.

Even allowing for the euphoria of the Nix's contribution the our World Cup success it would indicate players of a much higher pedigree than the ones we are looking at.

I don't think we should get too disheartened with the lack of signings. We still have the nucleus of a team which last season was one game away from the grand final. Sure we need find the players to ensure we've got a full team, and find back up in key positions but I think we are just an attacking player away from being a title contender.

That's what I meant by back up. Of course if we can pick up someone like North, all the better.

Well if you thought world class players were going to start turning up out of nowhere that's a bit silly.  There really aren't any world class players in the A-League anywhere!

I dont think we can go in with just last years team though (minus McKain)

The A League has got stronger each year it seems to me, and if we want to do better than last year, we need to have a stronger pool than we ended up with.

So far we arent stronger, and there are only 10 days to go

Ricki, you are testing my faith

We also need to accept that we've got a cap to work under so if Mr. Johnson wants $200k a year and our budget says $120k it won't work.

Hardly Ricki's fault.

Interesting news that (known or conjecture??)

I would have thought if we are only going to have 20 players at this time we would be well under the cap, and hasnt one of our most expensive players moved on??

Not having a go at Ricki, just saying it is getting close and I am getting concerned

Hypotheticals, but the  Johnson thing 'fell through' and he's a free agent so it wasn't over the transfer fee...

Just watched a few vids of Shuker and he looks alright to me. He had a bad season last year but he can definitley bounce back.

He looks to play rightwing rather than central, but he is only 28 which would give us a fair few years with him if he turned out good

I agree with the comments about needing a stronger team than last year. So far we have lost a very good player in MCain, an Ok impact attacking player in Caceras and an erratic Dadi who still managed to bang in 5 goals in a handful of games.

MacAl looks like he might turn out to be more consistent than Dadi....but so far thats it.

The North signing is vital. Plus we deperately need another fast attacking goal scoring option.

So whats now on the table. Viera? we shall see but from all reports he is hardly another Ifill. But after that the speculation is on more midfielders....Elliott would be grand, Carlos....who knows? Shuker....yet another midfielder....and a midget(5ft 5"  or 1.65)

So who is going to score the goals? Ifill should be good for 10 to 15 if he has a good year. But after that, who are the natural goal scorers?. Ifill will be heavily marked again this season.

This is going to be a tougher season. Some other sides have recruited very well. Our first 11 looks very good but heaven help us if we get injuries(pray that Ifill goes through uninjured) There are quite a few midweek games that will really put the squad under pressure.

If we sign Elliott and North and had managed to get JJ then we would all be excited.......its nail bitting time until the end of the month.  In Ricki we trust!!!!

At the moment I'm waking up every morning with the excitement of a new signing, so disappointing when there's nothing. Hopefully something tonight/today.

and Reddy got us to the finals. Not a chance we would have made it if we didn't sign him up....I'll miss him more than McKain even though we knew he was short term.

Just heard Elliotttt on the sports news on the radio. Said he wouldn't rule out a move to Wellington but his wife is in some residency situation in the states and if he played overseas (away from USA) he would want to be able to see her reguarly and wants to be at a club that would allow that.

Just read the article on stuff. Same as what was said on the radioLuis Garcia2010-07-22 08:16:39

Elliott on radio this morning saying he is not in negotiation with Nix at the moment. Mystery remains who the All White is we are after - if that possibility still has a pulse.
