Sounds very very promising.

No mention of going to Brazil on the way home - I assume that means they are confident the job is done.

Pleased to see that Tony and Rickie have done the job in the UK. I guess when the names are revealed we will all probably go ....who?
 
Until we see them play preseason we will  only really be able to judge them off YouTube clips and by their playing stats. Neither method will be much good...remember a certain Mr Smeltz. Many of us queried his initial signing...and the rest is history.
 
We will just have to trust Tony and Rickies good judgement. Tony sounded fairly upbeat in his Blog. Sure hope they both turn out excellent buys.
 
No mention of the side trip to Brazil. Not sure if this means recruiting another attacking midfielder is still on the cards. I sure hope it is. Our attacking play through the midfield was pretty lame last year. Diego is a good signing but he has been injury prone.
 
If Diego has injury problems again then we are left with last seasons midfield plus the two new strikers....that will not be enough!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Totally agree, we need to find  more depth in the squad.
We where very ordinary in the middle of the park last season.

Lads went to Wigan - what League 1 clubs are near to Wigan I ask myself;
 
Leeds (sort of), Tranmere, Oldham, Stockport, Huddersfield, and Crewe.

No to Elliott, too injury prone. And besides, I think if Ricki were interested he'd be signed already, he has not had a club for a while.

Defensive midfielders we have any way, we need better attacking ones.

Kevin Kyle is about the right age and isn't in a club likely to be playing in the Championship next season

Theres no way Beckford would come here. He would command a big salary and has a future in the Championship/Low premier league side

In Tony�s first blog he mentioned he had meetings scheduled with players playing at levels higher than League 1. May mean some strikers from relegation bound Championship clubs are in the mix.

Here's a list of some battle weary strikers who may want a sojourn in the A-League. Feel free to add or can any options here.

Charlton - sure to be relegated

Todorov � Mentioned in this thread before Two crocked knees have killed his career. He's now 30 and has played a few reserve matches and 10 minutes off the bench in recent months, after sitting out most of the past two seasons. He was class but he's not at all likely to be retained when they go down.

Deon Burton - brought in to keep them up but after some workman-like performances poor scoring record saw him replaced up front. At 32 he'e experienced but unlikely to feature much in a League 1 Charlton side if retained with younger players like Fleetwood and Dickson ready to step up

Southampton - On shakey ground financially by all accounts and likely to shed players to avoid administration. The Saints strikers are generally young with the exception of Saganowski who is likely to pick up another championship contract if he doesn't stay and the pickings here look slim.

Jason Euell - His contract's up in the UK summer and he's 31, plays up front or in the midfield and has experience in the top flight - sticking point would be his salary. BBC message boards say he's one of Southamptons higer paid players.

Stern John - Contract is up at the end of the season and won't be renewed. He's currently 32 and on loan at Bristol City, no doubt to cut costs at Southampton as he's surplus to requirements. He's a proven goal scorer with bucket loads of experience. Could Roy Keane have given Ricki an inside word on him seeing as Roy signed him for Sunderland?

Nottingham Forrest - The wheels are coming off their recent run and it is looking likely that they'll be in a relegation fight with Norwich and Plymouth Argyle as Barnsley have a couple games in hand are coming off a morale boosting win against Palarse which could see them getting up steam to clear the drop zone.

No likely suspects here as far as I can see with Robert Earnshaw and Nathan Tyson looking well out of our league and young enough to keep collecting Championship wages, and their other options are too young to fit the bill.

I watched Carl Cort for Norwich recently, and at the risk of giving News a boner, he was one of the worst players I've ever had the privilege of watching live

As has been mentioned several times before: Chris Greenacre.
Tranmere striker who has played for Man City. Has to be him now surely.

Other striker not so sure about tho.

Wont be Cureton either - After Reading he signed for a Korean team and was a flop there. Success for Reading and a flop in Korea, doesnt sound right does it??

Love the comment on his Wiki page; "He is often praised for his high work-rate."
 
 
That's just the sort of work ethic that will fit in well with the team culture - Siggy, Manny, Leo, Brown ........ no prima donnas - team first.
 
He has a very good goal scoring record over a number of years and, at 31, you would think he would have at least a couple of good years left in him - I'd be very happy if he was one of our 2 new strikers.
 
P.S. I think the 2nd striker will be Killen - I have absolutely no reason for thinking this other than the lads weren't over there very long. Greenacre would have taken up a fair bit of time whereas Killen is as simple as - ready to come home ? So, basically, pure speculation.

True he turned his back on NZ for a pipe dream of playing for England, but my team Plymouth Argyle are feeling the bite of possible relegation and he's not been involved with the team much of late and Plymouth played up that way the other day.

Would be cool to get Killen but wouldn't want to be forking out too much dosh as he is quite out of sorts. but i guess that means it is a good time to jump on him if we could. Don't know about his contract though.
 
Greenacre looks quite promising. Reminds me of Porter in some ways

Someone like Killen could be brought in as a Marquee player of course.  A marquee striker would go down a treat and would keep a lot of the salary cap free for other targets.

Wouldn't that depend on what McKain our current Secret Marquee is being paid and whether his salary fits under the Cap?

I would have thought that a combination of a slightly smaller squad, a couple of "cheap" youth players and assigning youth marquee status to our most expensive youth player (outside cap - correct ?) would give us a fair bit of "cap room" within which to accomodate McKain and the second striker - the assumption being our first striker will be our highest paid player and, therefore, our marquee.

Sure it's a cunning plan to do it, but what happens if we get the oppourtunity to sign fred as marquee or someone of similar calibre.
If we had a similar circumstance as we had this year with mcKain then it may not be possible.

Using costa or someone else as youth marquee is something I'd accept but realistically I don't see many youth players taking up too much of the cap unless you had someone like rukavytsya or somethingplaywithFire2009-03-20 15:54:17
