Sean Devine is at Metro but Three Kings are apparently trying to sign him and have a bit orf coin. Heard through the grapevine he asked for a $4k sign on fee to sign a new contract at Metro!

We need to sign another keeper, Dodd (or another centre back) and 2 youth players. That makes 19. Talk is about 3 strikers (2 from UK + Brazilian). That makes 22.

I think that will be it - we should / will keep at least 1 squad slot up our sleeves for too good to miss opportunites / flops.

Means no place for Christie.

Also can't help starting to think someone is playing silly buggers with the time it is taking for Dodd to re-sign.

Am I the only person that thinks we shouldnt resign Dodd :S we had a leaky defence and need to strengthen it here is an easy opportunity to do it without resigning a very average player

Close to it, I would say. Games against Melbourne and Adelaide aside, I wouldn't have said our defence was that leaky this season. We just couldn't score enough at the other end.

In fact, in a post a few weeks ago, someone pointed out that after taking away every club's worst two defeats we had one of the best defences. Just a few really bad days.

No your not.  Dodd is not very average, he is below average. Good enough for the local league, not the A league. If someone else wanted to sign him I'd say please. I would look forward to our new forwards, who ever they are, facing him.

Dura was terrific in the last half of the season (when he played). I think Sig + Dura should be our preferred pairing.

Easy as that. I hope we keep dodd. Gives us depth in case of injuries.

I still think that Durante would be best out on the right. He played bloody well there for the planes. I think he is a good player but doesn't have that nuggetitiness about him that Sigmund and Dodd have (which is a personal attribute I like to see in my CBs). Hard to drop Muscat though as he was a performer and a mover and would like to see how he starts the season with a full A League preseason under his belt.

I'll throw out a daft name here and will take the ridicule but I think Nathan Strom has been the best CB in the NZFC. While he is a bit older, he would be a good, cheap, local reserve defender and brings a hard streak. I put a caveat on that statement that I'd sign him if we found ourelves in a position of needing another reserve defender (behind the signing of Dodd) but at the moment, we don't. Can be card prone due to his emotions but I think has a bit of the same nuggetitiness that Sigmund has.

We need some speedy defenders.
We haven't had anyone quick since Steven O'Dor.
(though he was still developing, of course)

Can any of our current defenders chase down Zullo, Rukayvitsa or even Archie Thompson?

Don't recall Muscat giving Zullo much of a sniff the last time we played the Roar

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Approximate list, may be inaccurate.

Jo Kuffour (Bristol Rovers) - No EPL games but Arsenal 1998-2002 and Arsenal youth.
Michael Bridges (Carlisle United) - Sunderland 1995-1999, Leeds United 1999-2004, Newcastle United 2004 (loan).
Paul Connor (Cheltenham Town) - No EPL games but Middlesbrough 1996-1999.
Elvis Hammond (Cheltenham Town) Fulham 2001-2005.
Simon Johnson (Hereford United) Leeds United 2002-2005.
Phil Jevons (Huddersfield Town) - Everton 1996-2001.
Danny Cadamarteri (Huddersfield Town) Everton 1996-2002, Leeds United 2004.
Steve Howard (Leicester City) Derby County 2006-2008.
Gary Alexander (Millwall) No EPL games but West Ham 1997-2000.
Lee Hughes (Oldham Athletic) West Bromwhich Albion 2002-2004.
Michael Ricketts (Walsall) Bolton Wanderers 2000-2003, Middlesbrough 2003-2004, Leeds United 2004-2006). One England cap.

Also Lee Peacock (Swindon Town) Manchester City 1999-2000,  although he's now playing as a midfielder.

Of that list only Michael Ricketts really stands out as worthwhile. Michael Bridges I believe is a Hull City player on loan to Carlisle so probably doesn't count.

Ricketts was rubbish at Leeds, he may have played for England once but is a shadow of himself.  Leeds deliberately let him go.

Oh come on now man, be serious...Strommy is a good athlete but he's so far off this level.  It is a huge step up, remember that Sigmund was the outstanding player in the NZFC for 2 or 3 seasons.

Yeah I did say I would take ridicule for it. I'm not saying he is there now or even close to that. I just thought with the back 5 (assuming Dodd resigned) he would be a good cheap local 6th option. I don't think there are many local CBs better at the mo in the NZFC. He'd never see any time, but just has that nuggetity toughness about him.

I personally think that Dodd and Siggy is the pairing of choice at centre-back positions

There's only 2 strikers in League One that have played for Manchester City that I could find. Chris Greenacre and Lee Peacock. Both's contract expire this season so I'm pretty confident (if the article is to be believed) that one of these is who we're after.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBX92lYxZsA&NR=1

Let's go Disco?

As for the other striker from league one, strikers with contracts expiring age 29-32:
Lee Hughes (Oldham) age 32 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Hughes
Aaron Wilbraham (MK Dons) 29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Wilbraham
Malcolm Christie (Leeds/Free Agent) 29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Christie
Gary Hart (Brighton & Hove Albion) 32 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Hart_(footballer)
Gary Alexander (Millwall) 29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Alexander_(footballer)
Neil Harris (Millwall) 31 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Harris_(footballer_born_1977)
Danny Cadamarteri (Huddersfield) 29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Cadamarteri
Phil Jevons (Huddersfield) 29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Jevons
Lloyd Owusu (Cheltenham) 32 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_Owusu
Gifton Noel-Williams (Yeovil) 29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gifton_Noel-Williams
Ian Moore (Tranmere) 30 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Moore
Michael Ricketts (Walsall) 30 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Ricketts
Leon Constantine (Northampton) 30 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_Constantine
Matty McNeil (Stockport) 32 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matty_McNeil

Given that Peacock and Greenacre are 32 and 31 respectively, that might narrow the list down to Wilbraham, Christie, Alexander, Cadamarteri, Jevons and Noel-Williams.

I remember Christie when he played for Derby. Was very sharp and pacey but who knows what he'd be like now? If he's anything like he was he would be a good one to get..

Herald on Sunday says that Ricky and Tony went and watched Krishna in Waitakere's 3-0 win over Otago on Waitangi Day. They are apparently going to wait and watch him in the playoffs, where they reckon more pressure on Roy will give them more of a clue. Bringing him in on trial for preseason is an option also.

It also says Krishna is the only NZFC player they are keeping tabs on, and Fred is still a possibility. I tried to find a web link but couldn't, but it does say it.

They should be looking at Luis as well, and hunting for a yoof player.

I watched Team Wellington once a few weeks ago, Corrales is quite good I think. He would be worth a trial or something I reckon.

Do Krishna and Luis (if they signed) occupy an import spot?

1 for Diego (confirmed)
3 for these rumoured 2 strikers and 1 attacking midfielder.
1 left.

Means we sign a local keeper, if you don't want to use it on an import, and if you did, that rules out Krishna and Luis. Local keeper also rules out Imray. More likely to be Spoonley, but hes not on the Auckland bench at the moment.

Interested to see how these pan out. Krishna would give them the pace that they after and he runs at the defence with ball at feet as well, a bit light, but nothing to stop him hitting the gym. Luis is similar and I would be intrigued to see him and Krishna in a foot race. On the flip side, I have heard strong rumours that Krishna wants to go to the US and Rex is enforcing the terms of the contract.
