I think I read somewhere that Draper scored 5 goals in one game.

Anyone know the situation with Putter - left town, still here with trial extended until injury allows him to play or ..... ?
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Phoenix wasted their chance by not giving Draper a decent go.  A good striker who was as capable as Costa yet got only game-time in two matches (from memory).

I still recall one of the saddest moments last season was heading down to Four Kings to watch an away match and seeing Draper sitting by himself, quietly nursing a beer.

Hang on, Draper wasn't ignored but last season was unlikely to push Smeltz out.  At the end of last season he decided he wanted to be playing more so the club helped him find a VPL deal where he's playing every week.

That's hardly 'ignored and gone' is it ?

As for Mulligan, what are they meant to do, take a hit on the cap to release a player and then find themselves short of players if injuries hit ?

No that's true but he should probably have started ahead of Kwasnik on a number of occasions.  Maybe even Coveny as well in the few games he got.  Coveny was great in season one but faded in season two.

I disagree strongly with everything else that you've said...but I am myself wondering a little about this.  Is Ricki the best man for the job or the best kiwi for the job?  Veeeeery big year for our Ricki obviously

For what we pay them ?

Parker and his offsider wanted $250k to run Waikato FC for a year and he's never coached any meaningful side to success, how much do you think someone with a proven record will cost ?  And if they are any good as a manager why would they be here not coaching in England ?

Do you know how much Australia are paying Pim for some quite average coaching ?  An amount we can't even dream of.

Should have kept Christie and released Mulligan if you want an average player just to cover in case of injuries.

Mulligan is average but not worth losing money on salary cap.. Good point on coaching.. why pay someone heaps of money when there not proven stick with Ricki... but anyone know what hes getting a season???

Our first season we scored 25 goals (1.2 per game, bottom equal GF). Season 2 we scored 23 goals (1.1 per game, 2nd to bottom GF).

Your average spectator (i.e. not football fanatic) wants to see goals, scored by his team - our sh*t GF would have played a part in the crowd numbers being as disappointing as they were last season - boring draws don't put bums on seats.

Greenacre fit and firing AND and a decent second striker and I think we can turn improve our GF, get some decent results, rebuild the crowds and compete for a play-off spot - I can't see us making the top 4 but I can see us competing for 5th or 6th

Greenacre injured or no second and third striker and we are screwed

You do realise that the top 6 are playoffs this year right?

From the other thread on Michael Owen, he is a free agent as of the end of June, unless he signs with Hull.  Seriously, can we buy him up for a few weeks?

Yes - which is why I made the comment about 5th or 6th.

I'd be very happy to make the play-offs by finishing 5th or 6th - preference obviously is for a top 4 finish to get a home play-off game. My recollection is 5th or 6th have no possibility of a home play-off game.

We would have to time it perfectly as he is only fit to play for about 2 weeks every year,

That's hardly 'ignored and gone' is it ?

The 'Nix have been good to their players, organised loan spells in Oz in the off season last year for Costa (maybe Draper as well) and I think with those contacts organised a move for Old to a NSWPL club which has now seen him sign to a SPL club.

Should pick up David Williams. Doubt he would want to come to Welly but it's worth a shot. He was a good player from what I remember - really quick. Not exactly a target man though.

Wait a minute. OF COURSE Draper was ignored. He wasn't given close to what anyone could deem as a fair chance. 2 games off the bench playing f**k all minutes. Makes a mockery of signing him. And if you had been ignored for two seasons you would want to go to the VPL as well. While they were giving Kwasnik opportunity after opportunity, Draper was not given a decent chance off the bench. All the Phoenix did was stagnate the development of a very promising young player, instead of playing football like he needed to, he was sitting on the bench in a crucial development stage of his career.

How many games do you actually think Kwasnik started ?

The people watching him in training didn't think he was as good as the other options so he didn't get game time.  That's not ignored, that is a coach making a decision that the other options were better equipped to do the job.

Course, if we'd had a youth team playing in the  Youth League last season  we wouldn't be talking about this,
would we?

Its something a youth player has to weigh up when they sign, do they mind sitting on the bench but getting a chance to train fulltime and earn some dollars or playing fulltime in a lesser league. The club dosent owe them game time.nightz2009-07-02 21:56:02

We would have to time it perfectly as he is only fit to play for about 2 weeks every year,

CLASSIFIEDS:

Free to a good home: Striker(Owen model).  Hardly used, in need of a good overhaul.  Very expensive to run and breaks down easily.  Performs best in red or white, avoid stripes altogether.

For sale: Midfielder (Zokora model).  Good condition, goes well and quite reliable.  Older French make (has been replaced by a younger Honduran version) - so possibly will get drunk and think someone has assaulted him.

stripes might be a problem then...
could always just base him in Auz and have him play whenever we are in the away strip

So ricki was on the radio last night talking about new strikers. They have rulled Putter out. But have 4 strikers on short list. One that may go to China next week, and another in contract talks. Can't remember the rest.. was tired..

Sounded promising!

Anyone know anything more?
