If I was the phoenix, I wouldnt be in a hurry to sign to many current All Whites after watching the rubbish they dished up this morning. It was VERY VERY VERY disappointing.

mate you are too forgiving...what they dished up was dull, unimaginative, capitulative, defensive no hope football. I wouldnt mind but south africa are hardly world beaters

Fair Enough but in regard to James, to be fair he didn't get much gametime in South Africa

And he could have been the creative link that the side needed...

You know we belong together...

I am surprised that James isn't used more, his goal scoring record for the under age teams is very good so he knows where the back of the net is.

It could have been quite good to have some fresh attacking legs running through the center for us tonight, but for the Nix, not sure how much game time he would get, and atleast at Tampere he plays in the European cup where there is always scouts available to be seen.

Not sure what he will gain by coming back to NZ?

Also how did Chris Wood slip through the Phoenix scouting radar? or did they just not think he was the right player?

Surely if Chris Wood came to the Phoenix that would be a serious backward step in his career. Just starting to break into the Premier League and then dropping back to the A-League. Can't see it happening.

Yes but I mean before he joined West Brom however I don't know if he had been there in the youth teams for some time before last year?

I believe he joined WBA in August of 2007. So never really an option.

I hope it doesn't happen, it would most certainly be a step backwards.

He was playing highschool football for St Pauls, a solid team which tries to play quite attractive football. They are coached by former all White Groom, forget the first name.

Had a break out season playing senior mens for Melvill in his sixth form year i think which got him into the u17's where he impressed at the cup to get trial offers.

I think Roger Wilkinson also works for WBA which helps. But basically he came out of nowhere, so not too surprised he wasn't known.

Some good talented players coming through Waikato at the moment, Rojas and Woods, and i read that apparently Built the u17 midfielder is off to Northampton to play, League 2 side. Not sure if its a youth contract or what... was in the local rag.

Dennis Ibrahim. A player like Dennis would be ideal for the Phoenix. Probably past his best by now though...

His best was with the KIngz (which says a  lot) last I heard he barely played again after that and retired.

Sad really, I would have liked to have seen him string a few seasons back to back for them. His style of play would be nice to see in the Phoenix side.

The hard thing for the coaching staff is because the league is still relatively young it is hard to know exactly how well a player from a European league is going to go adapting. It must be quite difficult to move halfway across the world. Greenacres sounds good, but what happens if he doesn't score for the first few weeks?? Most strikers survive on confidence they get from scoring goals, add that to having to move halfway across the world...
A case in point, Simon Yeo. Arrived at the Knights with a decent reputation as a goalscorer in the same league as Greenacre. He didn't settle, possibly largely due to off-field issues and playing in a crap team and never fulfilled his potential. Whats to say if he hadn't grabbed a couple of early goals things may have been a little different for Yeo...

I think the Phoenix management would be looking very closely at these players' mental toughness possibly just as much as their technique, because they don't want someone that is going to go crying off as soon as the going gets tough...

Forgive me if someone else has already said this: Aaron Scott for the 'Nix!
Permalink Permalink

Hasn't Tony P indicated that Scott's not what they're looking for at this stage?
Seem to remember reading this somewhere, but can't remember where...

Some Waikato news paper asked him and he said that he "had'nt appeared on the radar" (or something to that effect). He should be on the radar now after a solid performance for the national team

The Nix need a player like Darren Huckerby or a player of his stature,we need a marquis player who will give us an impact. Are our scouting methods working

Woods, Rojas and Built all played for Hamilton Wanderers not Melville, can't let them get away with that. I think Woods was actually a Cambridge junior ??? but played for Wanderers in the 2007 Northern Premier League at 15 scoring 12 goals in 16 games. Which suddenly put him on the NZ radar.

We'd have no trouble finding new boots for the players...

you'd be keeping a wary eye on the Wags,...plus your kids, friends and neighbours and assorted domesticated animals that might be in his vicinity........!!

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Nevermind the Wags, think there'd be some very hesitant players when it comes to showering after games.

Darren Huckerby, only time I saw him play was a right lol.  For Norwich and it was in the Premier League from memory.  He'd just come back from injury and the commentator was raving on about him, after a few minutes he got past the defence (or a lot of them anyway) and had a shot.  Would have been a dream goal if it went in, unfortunately it went so far wide it was nearly a throw-in (and he was standing directly in front of goal from memory).

I don't think I contributed at all to this thread.

As you were.

He was playing for North Shore in the 2006 u19 national club tournament in Napier

I see Gold Coast trying to put together a package of 9 games their target is Hendrick Larsen,my whole point a top Marquis player/ using Huckerby was because SanJose Earthquakes got their a into g and we are falling behind in attracting players before the season is upon us.

Gold Coast are 'allegedly' breaking the salary cap and funded by a mining billionaire.

We are obeying the rules and funded by a man who's business is being screwed by the current economic crisis.

Hardly comparable.

It's spelled Marquee...unless you want to sign a French aristocrat.

If Gold Coast really are 'allegedly' breaking the cap, who's going to call them on it?

If Football Australia knows, and are turning a blind eye, then it's a scandal.

Anyone know a football journo who'd be willing to ask some pertinent questions?

EDIT - HN - Arse covering.
Edit - S - nothing like a well placed 'alleged' to cover one's butt.

Back when O'Neil and Carrroll ran the league I doubt it would have been allowed, Buckley seems more intent on the news cycle than the viability, sustainability and competitiveness of the league.

He'd be right at home with the NZFC.

Still think it's worth trying to find a journo to stir up this  'alleged' rats' nest - 'cos that's what it sounds like.

Get the 'alleged' misdoing/s out there for all to see.

Will need to get a league journo. Football journos in oz don't bite the hand that feeds the mouth.

Marquee players are not under the salary cap umbrella, they can be funded privately or by syndicates that's why Robbie Fowler and players like him are attracted to the A league rather than staying in the Football league. yatesybigal2009-06-23 17:41:27
