The Warriors got mentioned as they played a league game at home.

We played a Pre-Season game in Rural Queensland.  Air New Zealand Cup sides are currently playing Pre-Season matches and you don't hear a peep about those generally.

Get over it.

If the stupid buggers running the league had just called it the A League Cup there would not be as much of an issue with coverage, it's that they put pre-season in there is the problem

Fair. Making the final will hopefully warrent a mention, the 5000 season ticket goal depends on it I think, the season could snowball from there. Good to see we got Queensland at home first game after we drew on their home turf.
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

Warriors played at about the same time, I'm sure Phoenix must be catching up to them in status in the nz sport hierarchy. But the warriors got mentioned and we didn't.

The Warriors were in the business end of the NRL regular season and beat probably the best team in the comp. They played 2 hours earlier, in NZ and had TV coverage. They started at 2pm.

The Phoenix played a preseason match against a mid table team, with no tv coverage and got a draw. They started at 4pm......

Roar and Phoenix finish all square
Sunday, 27 July 2008

Massimo Murdocca

Queensland Roar and Wellington Phoenix have fought out a 1-1 draw on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday afternoon, leaving the home side's Pre-Season Cup final's chances resting on the result of Sydney FC's match against Central Coast Mariners.

It was a niggling start to the cross-Tasman clash, both sides guilty of giving away cheap fouls, but it was Queensland who had the best of the early chances, Wellington going unpunished after the Roar failed to capitalise on several free-kicks in the opening minutes.

In the 18th minute the home side's early persistence paid off, when Massimo Murdocca found himself in space on the left flank. The midfielder did well to beat some heavy Phoenix defence, before cutting back to a waiting Sergio Van Djik at the top of the box, who finished coolly with a surging strike into the top right-hand corner.

Wellington responded quickly, some good build up play setting up their first shot on goal ten minutes later when Michael Ferrante drilled the ball hard towards the top corner, but an outstanding save from Roar keeper Liam Reddy denied the visitors.

Phoenix defender Jon McKain was shown a yellow card by referee Regis Queffelec in the 39th minute when he took Roar striker Tim Smits down on the edge of the box with a tackle from behind but the resulting free-kick from Van Djik floated wide.

Phoenix came out faster in the second half, Reddy tested early as the visitors peppered his goal forcing him to make another brilliant save in the 61st minute, when he pushed Troy Hearfield's scorching shot from the top of the box over the bar.

Phoenix evened the score in the 74th minute when the Roar's backline failed to clear a ball directly in front of goal. New Phoenix recruit Adam Kwasnik pounced on the gifted chance, smashing it home and leaving Reddy stranded.

Farina's men were lucky not to find themselves behind when Smeltz fired another shot born of a Roar defensive error minutes later which went just wide.

While both sides surged forward in the dying minutes, neither could find the back of the net, and both sides were left to take home a point each.

Queensland Roar 1 (Van Djik 18)
Wellington Phoenix 1 (Kwasnik 74)

Thanks very much for the updates.  Think I have just about survived this experience with my sanity intact!  Its horrible having such patchy coverage.

Hear what you say HN about realism on coverage - but clearly many people interested and surely the A-League could consider keeping interest as high as possible.

They do no such thing, the team with the pre-teen supporters are on 1 point as they lost to sydney and drew with us.

WLG: 4
SYD: 3
CCM: 3
QLD: 1

I'm sure the A-League site will be updated soon.

depends - both ADL and WGTN are on the same GD, so if the reds win it'll come down to that. If they don't (and we do), it'll be in wellington. Thats my understanding.

I bet they just did that so Perth have to travel further! In all seriousness, it's good to see the aussie teams giving the regional centres some pre-season love.

The reds have a much better chance against Perth than we do against Bling :(

We have the same points, goal difference and goals scored as Adelaide so it will come down to who gets the best result next weekend - points, gd and then gs.

If that doesn't separate us it's red cards then yellow cards.
