Yes, it is an increasing trend in football coverage and it's bloody annoying.  They did it all the time at the world cup, in the England games David Beckham was shown continually!

Yes. Seriously. What is your football knowledge like?

Actually that's not really true.  The argentine league wouldn't be in the top 10 in the world any more.  The best players leave very early and the standard really isn't that great.   And I am basing this on actually being in Argentina and watching a lot of matches

What would you rank ahead of it then?

Premier League, Championship, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, Holland, Belgium, Portugal, Greece, potentially, Turkey and Brazil.

You taking the piss

Three for me, and two for them.

I think if this game has shown one thing, it is that the Phoenix could easily compete in the Argentine League. And maybe even win it.

Not really.

Three for me, and two for them.

I'm fine with it generally, as long as they are back to the action just before/as soon as play starts.]

Dear Sir/Madam

Perhaps this result will persuade you to show some respect for the mighty force that is New Zealand football. Next time send over Boca Seniors.

Respectfully yours,

Nope.  How many argentine club matches have you watched?  Greece has had up to 4 champions league participants in recent years, it's very well funded and has a lot of quality players.  Players don't go from Argentina to big leagues these days, most bypass it altogether and leave at a young age.  Top three or four in argentina could compete but at the bottom clubs are poorly managed, go through players and coaches at a rate of knots, there's a huge amount of violence, guys like veron and martin palermo are still dominating, the whole league had to be nationalised by the argentine govt, it's not the same as it was 4 or even 5 years ago

Where are Boca Juniors in the mix now? are they top 4 or one of the others? (genuinely not sure of the answer, and interested how we went in that context)

The fact you have used the 'x amount of Champions League teams' in an argument concerning two leagues from different confederations says it all.

And i think when it comes to the Championship, you must be reading 'quality' as 'competitive'.

But anyway thank you for raising a chuckle out of me today. Made my day that. Ahh

Three for me, and two for them.

The fact that the Boca Juniors are on the wrong continent is a possible reason why greek clubs have had a better showing in the champions league

yeah, I loved what we saw of pavolic, but toto looked kinda cool too.
I only saw second half, but enjoyed seeing leo on the ball a bit more (cf world cup) and brownie was definitely making up for lost time. forgot for a moment what an aggressive bastard he is! Loved it (but also wonder how long he would have survived against italy!)

This is the UEFA league coefficient for this season:

England, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Russia, Ukraine, Portugal, Turkey, Netherlands, Greece, Denmark.

Tell me where you think the Argentine league would sit in there, preferably without using smiley faces.

Of course I understand that Boca can't compete in the champions league.  But the simple fact is that the champions league is the best club competiton in the world and if a league can produce teams that do well in that competiton then surely it is an indicatior of the level that teams from that league can compete at?

And i put it to you again, how many argentine matches have you watched/ attended?  I've lived in the country for 3 months and watched Boca in both the league and the libertadores and watched a $hit load of games on TV so I feel like I know what I'm talking about.

Martin Palermo has scored 222 goals in the league, that says a lot

Boca were Apertura champions in 08/09 (they have 2 separate leagus per season)

Coefficients only tell so much don't they? La Liga is far superior to the Premiership at the moment and the Dutch league should be far higher too. It's better than the Ukranian, Greek, Turkish and Danish leagues though.

And yeah, i've seen enough via the internet to know what the league is like. Just because you have been to some matches there doesn't instantly qualify you as some expert on the league. I've been to K-League matches in Korea, doesn't mean i know anything about the league, in fact i know f**k all about it. I do know about the Argentine league though and you're underrating it.

About Palermo, yeah it does say a lot, it says he is a good striker who has been round a long time.

Three for me, and two for them.

Funny old game....contrast of styles and drama with all the bookings and growing frustration levels.  MacAlsiter(sp) is good..other triallists..well we need some more signatures so cest la vie.  One of the Boca number 10a played really well first half.

YF sounded great for early season...

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

it was good to be back (hello etc)

good to grab a win

like folks have said a bit of a strange game, certainly got a bit tasty after dura got tapped after the ball had gone and went into the next tackle with a bit of oomph - lifted the intensity (about 30 mins from memory)

I'm surprised the ref didn't send another one off, they certainly got in his face

nice to see Big Mac get his first at home

I haven't been to any pre-season friendlies before but tonight seemed a pretty intense affair to me. The Phoenix played really well and defended brilliantly, always looking like they were in control, Durante's 'whoopsie' notwithstanding. Crowds was great too and YF in great form. Crowd seemed about 9000-10000 which, when you think about, for a pre-season friendly is pretty damn fine. Wellington....is wonderful....

Hey you bastards I'm still here.

Good win by the lads.....first half looked like a well oiled machine starting up after a long rest. BigMac is a good signing...he fits in well with Ifill and Greenie.

Of the trialists..Palovich looks to have the goods for a youngster....some nice touches. The boy has some skill. Toto did some good things but it is way to earlier to tell if he will be a Georgex2....he certainly looks keen. Shuker...well you couldn't really tell, only arrived at 11am this morning. He would not know which planet he was on. I guess Viera and Lovemore are no longer on the scene. Shame for Lovemore...it would be good to see another kiwi.

Memo to Rickie.
Please don't do the three at the back thing. This team is settled, the players work well together. Playing three at the back will just bugger it all up. We went well last year, what we lacked was a couple of key players. There was no problems with the formation. With BigMac arriving a vital cog has been added to the setup. This season just play the team that started against Boca and we will be top 4 at seasons end. Its not broken...you don't need to fix it!!!!
