A good first hit-out at RoF for the team and fans alike.

Very much a trial type game with some good moves by the nix (Leo looking fresh after a bit of a stale later-season last year, Daniel making some good runs when he came on but a few poor decisions).

There was one part in the first half when Boca were pressing (after we had scored) and we had a solid backline but no one in midfield so there were 3 or 4 boca players all lined up ready to take pot shots or runs at us.

Crowd was so-so I thought. FZ looked full and plenty of crowd continuing from FZ to us in aisle 25. Chants never seemed to catch on much - some got going in Aisle 24/25 but didn't have the volume of FZ.

in terms of marketing, i reckon it 'worked'

i agree UKAndy the prices (and weather) would have kept some away but it got excellent media

so yeh a bit of a trade-off in terms of numbers in the ground and getting a financially viable contract for them to play

over-all a success i reckon - great to hear our result on Nat Radio news ahead of a ranfurly shield result

Don't see why it was poor taste. It was a friendly. Boca probly asked for it. After all its all we a pritty much known for oversea's.

Your only saying its poor taste because your suggesting the haka is associated with the All Blacks. Although the All Blacks do the haka it is a symbol of New Zealand culture.

I remember doing a Haka in scotland for a cricket school trip and they thought it was awsome so I imagine Boca thought it was great.

I thought it was a "nice" gesture to Boca. Not a feature of regular games but maybe for these international friendlies.

The group must have been keen to get off the field and into some warm clothes!

^^^ Looked like the Boca players appreciated the Haka, with smiles and applause all round from them.

Probably the last bit of the evening they enjoyed...

Not a bad effort from the Nix..nice and physical..Manny was superb as was Dura. Not a bad effort from FZ with general chanting and noise but who were the nupties throwing bottles again. FFS I thought this had been knocked on the head..............My only negative was the person behind me with a set of those damned hand clappers expounding her infinite knowledge of the Nix to her friends...how Vince Lia is captain, how the FZ is only Aisle 21 and how she knows Paston's wife...she was lucky that clappers didnt end up her damn arse...Please please can we ban them or make them for the family zone? Just a whinge I know but having those things clapping in your ears all night can make one a bit terse....and yes we all gave her the glare every time she did it and asked her to stop...but nope...she knows Paston's wife yoiu know!!!!!   Numpty

Yes. Seriously. What is your football knowledge like?

Actually that's not really true. The argentine league wouldn't be in the top 10 in the world any more. The best players leave very early and the standard really isn't that great. And I am basing this on actually being in Argentina and watching a lot of matches
What would you rank ahead of it then?

Premier League, Championship,Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, Holland, Belgium, Portugal, Greece, potentially, Turkey and Brazil.

Championsip and Belgium clearly not, Brazil thereabouts, maybe slightly better overall. Greece, Turkey and Holland probably not better either overall.

Is it just me or did the Nix play with a lot more pace than usual? I thought they transitioned from defense to attack much smoother and faster than last season.

Leo made some great runs down the wings. Also, Muscat was a beeaaast.Macallistar also had a great game IMO, i liked how he often came back to press and win some ball, not just waiting to have the ball fed to him.

Great night, very glad we went. Dura, Manny, Greeny and Leo all had great games. Phoenix stood strong against their "tactics", and Tim grew up about ten years inside twenty minutes. YF was a bit disjointed, and will get better with practice of course. Weather and prices (in that order) probably kept some away, but over 11k isn't too bad. Phoenix played as a unit, and we witnessed some very sweet passing. Glad that the YF sang over the bloody awful Prendergast woman's speech, but cheered the roof off for Ricki's award. Only slight spoiler for us was a row of JAFA's sat behind us, who knew less than sweet FA about the game in general and spent the whole game taking the p### of all things Wellington. They were extremely lucky not to get an elbow in the knackers. I did tell one to proceed and fornicate, but this did not seem to spread amongst their group. How do others deal with irritating twats like these? Still, we had a great time............STIULL UNDEFEATED!!! We're back!!

Nostalgia isnt what it used to be...........

Ahh no. Stop making sh*t up.

It was poor taste because it was contrived. They could have done a haka at the powhiri when they arrived in Wellington if Boca wanted to see one.

A haka is meant to be performed by the team facing their opponents. Which would have meant the phoenix players doing it. Not some run on dial-a-haka group.

The teams you see doing hakas, are the teams performing the hakas. Name me another event where you've seen a run-on dial-a-haka squad, because I've never seen one.

And I will add, when I've seen NZ footballers doing a haka of some sort, it's always been the players doing it. Just as in every other sports team from NZ or random crowd gathering does when they feel the need to.Ard Righ2010-07-24 13:48:06

lol we did actually do a haka but it was after the game at the end of match function. I guess your right about the powhiri.

But it wasn't really bad taste just a gesture. It didnt really ruin the spectacle at all so we'l just leave it at that.

Yeah you are correct,in fact i think Boca did get some sort of haka at their hotel. It would have been a Kerry Prendergast arranged thing.

Dial a haka indeed. Least it wasnt Mickey Mouse they were selling out to

I see in the context of last night's haka the word culture being used. Let's be clear culture is not fixed it does change.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Don who stood next to us actually sounded like a cross between a Conch and a mating Bison call when he was pretending to be one, but he plays in a brass band so must have an enormous lung capacity.

I always thought that when something was in poor taste it was somewhat mildly to actually offensive. Like if Durante had handed over woolly jumpers made from the wool of Falklands sheep for example. Bad taste would be like playing the MaccLads song "Buenos Aires (1982, Falklands War Mix)".

I was pleased there was little Falklands crap being banded about although one bloke shouted out his collection of Falklands stuff he must have googled. The guy was a kiwi , I was standing next to this Scottish bloke and I was shaking my head and he said "ffs it's all history now".

Dial a Hakas' get on my tits, but I was not particularly bothered by it. An Argentinian team is not going to understand the cultural significance and who should have performed it etc. They would have seen it as a welcome and a curiosity that's all.

changing the subject:

Who was the young bloke at the Back Bencher before the match who climbed up onto one of those plant boxes sang 3 song verses he had obviously written himself about the Allwhites?

It was met with a slightly bemused but crushing lack of interest from everyone after which he ran off like a thief  into the night?

That's not dial-a-haka.

Very little, but enough to trip Ifill, which when from behind after being beaten, is enough for a second yellow card.

I think the ones setting the prices were the ones being unrealistic.
This was a pre-season friendly with triallists playing.
How can they justify charging more than for a league game?

$112.50/125 for family vs $99 for 14 Nov

I think they were pricey, but willing to pay. Would have preferred similar level to 14 Nov - that was just right!

1) The tix were more expensive because Buenos Aires is a bit further to fly than Sydney. And we expected them to be not quite so crap.

2) Who's this white man making up the "tradition" that "hakas are only performed by the actual team"? I remember and endorse Ryan Nelsen's quip about how ridiculous it would have been for the "skinny white guys" of the AWs to do a haka, and I think it's actually only Leo who's tangata whenua in our team, right? I think it was excellent taste having the haka performed by actual, y'know, local Maori (although I was a bit surprised because I thought women weren't supposed to do that particular haka).

3) Big ups to Dewhurst's comment that, as opposed to the Beckham game three years ago, this time the crowd came to see the Nix.

Totally agree, thats the ONLY reason I didn't go and chose to watch on TV.

People say its not much blah blah blah, maybe not to them with a bigger disposable income, but someone like myself with bugger all spending money its too hard.  Well over $100 for me and the partner to come, tix = $104, then travel and any food or drinks, unrealistic.  Should price these games within reach of more people and then they will get a much bigger turn out and probably make more cash.

Now I will get slammed as I do everytime I mention this thing.

I do think it was marginally too expensive and think perhaps just under $40 instead of just under $50 would have been an easier sell.  To advocate $15 or $20 though is naive and unrealistic.

Boca aren't one of the English big 4 but they are a world recognised football brand and to charge more than a game against the North Queensland Fury is not unreasonable.

It is also worth noting two other points.

1, The Everton tour of Aus was as much as double the cost of this match.
2, The club got paid a set fee from Boca for the match, every chance that it was then Boca's decision (or at least a significant input) on pricing as ticket revenue was theirs.

Agree on all points.

I would have paid $35-39 per ticket, but for two of us worked out to $52 each just for tickets, not including getting there and refreshments.

I even took annual leave for the matcg from work the day the game was announced, before prices were released.

Quite a few people I spoke to were put off by the ticket price. I think just under $40 would have been more saleable.

I definitely think there should have been a student price.

That aside it was great having a team the calibre of Boca visiting - hopefully tours down under will became more common for top teams - a game or two in Oz and a side trip to play the Nix.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)
