Good win by the lads.....first half looked like a well oiled machine starting up after a long rest. BigMac is a good signing...he fits in well with Ifill and Greenie.

Of the trialists..Palovich looks to have the goods for a youngster....some nice touches. The boy has some skill. Toto did some good things but it is way to earlier to tell if he will be a Georgex2....he certainly looks keen. Shuker...well you couldn't really tell, only arrived at 11am this morning. He would not know which planet he was on. I guess Viera and Lovemore are no longer on the scene. Shame for Lovemore...it would be good to see another kiwi.

Memo to Rickie.
Please don't do the three at the back thing. This team is settled, the players work well together. Playing three at the back will just bugger it all up. We went well last year, what we lacked was a couple of key players. There was no problems with the formation. With BigMac arriving a vital cog has been added to the setup. This season just play the team that started against Boca and we will be top 4 at seasons end. Its not broken...you don't need to fix it!!!!
I hope we dont do the three at the back

What battle? All i saw was JD argue amongst himself without bothering to actually read through any of my posts.

Three for me, and two for them.

Well worth a look see http://www.bocajuniors.com.ar/en-us. Has some footage from tonight's game, but, strangely, no mention of the score. Por qu no?

Hey you bastards I'm still here.

I see it now, I assumed that you would come up with something more than the bold assertion "it is better than league x, y and z"

Man, it has been a way too long off season. It took me like 2 minutes to realise that you were right and that Sydney won last season. Pfff... Bring on Friday the 13th.

Great stuff boys!

What do you guys reckon the crowds at the caketin will be like in the regular season compared to tonight? I know the weather was crap, but still a disappointing attendance I thought

The ticket prices and the weather were a pretty huge barrier for most people, I would think - $40 is a lot to pay for a pre season game against a team most 'casuals' wouldn't know much about (and even football regulars wouldn't know much about this current Boca team)

Remember that Melbourne, who get the largest crowds in the A-League, only got about 1,500-2,000 more people to their Boca game.

The fact you have used the 'x amount of Champions League teams' in an argument concerning two leagues from different confederations says it all.

And i think when it comes to the Championship, you must be reading 'quality' as 'competitive'.

But anyway thank you for raising a chuckle out of me today. Made my day that. Ahh

This is the UEFA league coefficient for this season:

England, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Russia, Ukraine, Portugal, Turkey, Netherlands, Greece, Denmark.

Tell me where you think the Argentine league would sit in there, preferably without using smiley faces.

Of course I understand that Boca can't compete in the champions league.  But the simple fact is that the champions league is the best club competiton in the world and if a league can produce teams that do well in that competiton then surely it is an indicatior of the level that teams from that league can compete at?

And i put it to you again, how many argentine matches have you watched/ attended?  I've lived in the country for 3 months and watched Boca in both the league and the libertadores and watched a $hit load of games on TV so I feel like I know what I'm talking about.

Martin Palermo has scored 222 goals in the league, that says a lot

Boca were Apertura champions in 08/09 (they have 2 separate leagus per season)

Agree with everything you've said on this and was about to mention the Ukraine but you got in before me.  They have some strong teams and their league isn't to be sneezed at.

Considered mentioning Romania as they have a few quality sides but from what I've heard it sounds like the lower part of the league is somewhat of a shambles.

Would you rate the J-League on a par with the Argentinian league (haven't seen a lot of J-League, personally)?

On topic, thoroughly enjoyed the game.  Great to watch.  How many regulars were Boca missing?  We looked very comfortable on the ball, I thought, and nobody played poorly.  Hearfield was average, but he was the lowest.  Muscat looks like he could give Lochhead a run for his money this season.

You're right, plenty of cash floating around in the Ukraine.

It's also instructive that a lot of argentines choose to play in Mexico because the pay is better

I have never watched a single J League game so couldn't comment.  Sth America have beaten asian teams in the club world cup though

I must add, I thought the kapa haka group on the field doing a haka before kick off was very poor taste.

Some of the pictures on 442 are hilarious. The ones of Jamie Cross and the one of Brownie looking terrified of the ball are standouts.

If it'd been at AAMI they would have got 30,000 easy. Stupid, short sighted, greedy promoters.

Boca what? Youth v Phoenix men. Phoenix is trialling few players and Boca Youth brought mostly younsters. If that comes from a top club from Argentina, then we are disappointed. Flashes of Argentinian football flair but plenty of aggro from both sides. Won't be fooled next time.

The weather actually wasn't too bad by start time. No real 'rain' and 'our' end is always sheltered in a southerly.    Also I thought the attendance was pretty good, great atmosphere. I would be v happy with that as a pre season start up crowd and I think it will only build for the regular season.

as a zone we need to help keep these things out

i reckon text security (you could ask them to stop blowing it first and if they don't stop then text security)

those things are banned and security would be obliged to act

as to the two or three idiots who threw stuff I'm glad that our reaction from all over the zone seemed to prevent that behaviour spreadingtigers2010-07-24 10:10:50

Im a season ticket holder but I wasnt going to pay those prices to watch a pre-season 'friendly' with a load of triallists.

What were they thinking, that should have $15 to $20, and would have attracted a few more fringe people who might come and watch during the season.

Very poor marketing, fleecing the regular spectators.

Having said that, I quite enjoyed it on TV until the triallists took over. Durante was superb, so was Muscat. Macallister looked to be handy aquisition for us. Lia was a bit hit and miss, Hearfield - well, I cant see him keeping Muscat out of the side.

If they charged $15 and got 11,000 people then it would have been a loss.

Be realistic.
