Reddy

Hearfield - Durante - McKain - Lochhead

Muscat

Lia - Brown

Ifill ----------------------------Caceres

Greenacre

Bench:

Crowther
Dadi
Bertos
Barbarouses

Dadi to not start please, has been woeful after the two good matches.  muscat to tag Smeltz all night and Lia and Brown to close down Culina/Porter.  We need a strong midfield here.

I hope that was rhetorical...
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I believe the club may be appealing one of Tim's yellows - the one against Melbourne in the 4-0 loss I think.

UPDATE: It was actually against Perth and, as reported on Radio Sport today, it's been successful...

The Wellington Phoenix have successfully overturned a yellow card given to midfielder Tim Brown during the recent away match against Perth.

The card was issued by rookie referee Ryan Shepherd early in the match, even though Brown was nowhere near the incident which led to it. Under the "mistaken identity" clause, the card has now been rescinded.

It is an important decision for Brown, who was sitting on seven yellow cards, just one short of a two-game suspension. His tally now drops back to six, with two regular season matches remaining, and will be wiped clean if the Phoenix make the playoffs.

I too hate one up front, but would rather have one than have that donkey Dadi up there, what has he done in the last 3 games?? Absolutely nothing!!

I think Muscat, Brown and Lia will all play because of the form Caravella has been in recently, we need to flood the midfield so Caravella doesn't get to much time which in turn frees up Culina.

4-3-3 is the only way to go imo

Like I said it depends on Lia's fitness though

Herbert on the radio this morning saying how we line up against GCU will depend on the results of the earlier games in the round.

My interpretation of that is, if a point is valuable, we will have 3 DMs, 2 AMs and one up front. If a point is of no use we will have 2 up front.

In terms of making the Top 6 a point will only be valuable if the Jets draw or lose or the Fury win. The Fury and Roar both need to win to be a threat to us because of their inferior Goal Difference.

A point will also be valuable if Perth don't win but I suspect securing a Top 6 position is the priority (as it should be) rather than trying to finish above Perth.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Still makes no sense to me. Lochy and Hearfield up the wings with more freedom, Ifill and Caceres with less defensive responsibility, Greenacre up front and Brown making runs through the middle is more dangerous than a flat four and front 2 of Greenacre and Dadi.

I think the last time we played GCU, we did well because we shut down their midfield, and negated their long-ball game. We need to keep pressure on their defense, make Culina fall back to get the ball.

We need to make sure our defense doesn't fall into the trap of sitting up too far, like we did against Melbourne.

And yeah, definitely need to man-up in the midfield. I hope Lia can start with Brown, and Manny has been doing well in his spot in front of the back four with interceptions.

Lochy and Hearfield will be key to our attack though. Definitely noticed our attack falls apart if Lochy and Hearfield don't get forward.

Heard a snippet on Radio Sport about 1.30 today that Dadi may be out for this game. Didnt pick up the reason.

Starting Lia, Brown and Manny (as DM) together is a bit defensive for my liking. Two of them but surely not three?

It isn't really defensive when Hearfield and Lochhead basically play as wing backs most of the game as Manny drops into the defence to make a back 3 when on attack

It suits our team.

I didn't see anyone complaining about how defensive it was when we won 3 games in a row by convincing margins

So we shut down their midfield to negate their long ball? Doesn't make any sense mate. We shut down their midfield so they reverted to long ball which is much easier to defend against.

I think we can afford to sit higher up the park against the Gold Coast because they lack the pace of an Archie Thompson who tore us to shreds in Melbourne.

Agreed on Lochy and Hearfield.

And I'll get it now :p Ricki obviously has been reading these forums and made up Dadi's injury

Formation doesn't mean anything if the players don't play well but eh, that is what football forums are for

Wow Dadi out could be a blessing in disguise. Means open path for Lia to come in which is probably what we want against this GCU side

Either smittyz11 or homer's lineup will do then, I am not too fussed which...

Guess it may have been mentioned earlier but if we get a result we'll be doing the league a big favour, as it will set up a huge Sydney vs Melbourne finale to the regular season next weekend.

  Caceres                        Ifill
             Greenie(Dadi)

No suprise that we had the run of the 3 terrific games with the 4-3-3

Allows Muscat to focus on what he is good at - tackling ,tracking players etc. Allows Lia and Brown to do what they're good at - Brown making runs forward and Lia with those raking passes cross field. Caceres and Ifill drop back when we're defending so it's more like a 4-5-1. Allows Lochhead and Hearfield to get forward more because Manny can drop into the defence so we basically have 3 at the back when we're going forward if needed.

Only concern is Lia's fitness.

HILARIOUS!!!!!!!

I did have a different formation on page 2 before Dadi was possibly ruled out,

when he was it just seemed obvious to do that, maybe it was my subconcious writing because I had seen the same lineups in extremely close formations .

one thing I will say in my defense is that I always put WBs

One wee problem with all these formations etc is that nobody mentions the player roles and style of play. Formations are only one small part of the puzzle, the playing model and player roles are the more important aspect.

Too much emphasis is put on the formation. For example if a team is set up for 4-4-2 and then during a phase of play the left back overlaps the left midfielder whats the formation then? 3-4-3. So then the team loses possesion and suddenly have to defend while set up as 3-4-3. Whats important here, the original 4-4-2 formation or the player roles?

A little more disscussion about the playing model, player roles and actual tactics might be worth thinking about.

Simply typing out formations is a bit daft, its quite meaningless on its own
