Just out of interest, the side that day was...

Paston
Muscat-Durante-Sigmund-Lochhead
Lia-Brown
Bertos-Ifill-Daniel
Greenacre

Hearfield
Caceres
Chen
Crowther

Damn. No Chen :( Suppose a repeat is out of the question then.

Replace Chen with McCain, he's scoring freely at the moment.

I drop Dadi to the bench. So he gets the fact he needs work hard. Give Ifill a player like Bertos to rotate and work over the weakest link.  Then whe we up 3 nil go the solid aerial route with Dadi and Greenie up front till they are both run into the ground.

I would go for Caceres over Bertos.

me to......and I might even go for Muscat over Brown on current form

Though Brown is one yellow off a two match suspension, so is it worth playing him with that on the line?

Got to weigh up how much we need him in our race for 4th place vs how we'd cope without him in the play-offs.

Good point.  I was thinking back to Lia's latest two match ban, but that was for more than 8 cards.

Yeah, I think you're right.

Still, wouldnt be good at this stage of the season. Does it still apply in the playoffs? i.e if Brown gets a card in the first week of the playoffs,is he suspended for the 2nd round?

Allegedly

Not sure Cards carry over into playoffs but Suspensions certainly do (unless you play for Melbourne!)

Cards don't carry over...the slate is clean after 27 games and you need three yellows in the playoffs to earn a suspension.

C-Diddy is right though....if you reach 8 yellows before the end of game 27, the suspension carries over....so if Tim Brown gets booked on Sunday, he'd miss the CCM game and the first playoff game. If he doesn't get a yellow this weekend but gets one against CCM, he'd miss the first two playoff games if the Phoenix got that far.

Similarly, anyone sent off in round 27 would miss the first playoff game (and maybe more depending on the nature of the red card).

I believe the club may be appealing one of Tim's yellows - the one against Melbourne in the 4-0 loss I think.

No suprise that we had the run of the 3 terrific games with the 4-3-3

Allows Muscat to focus on what he is good at - tackling ,tracking players etc. Allows Lia and Brown to do what they're good at - Brown making runs forward and Lia with those raking passes cross field. Caceres and Ifill drop back when we're defending so it's more like a 4-5-1. Allows Lochhead and Hearfield to get forward more because Manny can drop into the defence so we basically have 3 at the back when we're going forward if needed.

Only concern is Lia's fitness.

Looks pretty good, but Daniel may provide more attacking threat than Lochead.
Dammit. Knew I was forgetting someone.
not bad, but we could do better than Dadi upfront.Crowther for striker!

This. That way we'll also have goalkeeper cover for when Reddy does a blitz up the centre when GCU are expecting yet another lame throw of the ball since he can't kick anymore.

generally agree..noting that Lockead and Hearfield would have to fight their way thru the midfield first to get a cross over to lone striker.

can't be seriously considering playing one up front, we never do well with any form of that shape....have to continue with two up, with either Ifill and greenie or Dadi and Greenie.

Can they do that?  I remember when Matt Simon got a very weak yellow card against us (after he did nothing wrong at all) and the commentators mentioned how it was a poor decision and was a pity he couldn't appeal it being a yellow.

Peoples obsession with 2 up front is strange to me. 4-3-3 is more attacking than 4-4-2 generally. Dadi and Greenie don't seem to work particularly great together because there is no one really making the runs.

We won 3 games in a row playing 4-3-3 -  reverted back to either 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 for the next few games and played shocking.

In the end formations are meaningless though if the players don't play up to standard.

We have played well with only 1 striker in the team. Add to that GCU like to play with 3 central midfielders, combine that with the movement of Caravella and Culina you need to match them there. we dont want another MV game where we were outnumbered in the middle of the park.

Would also like to see us play three across the middle of the park, closing down tate gold coast midfield will be very tough if try to do it with only two central players;

brown, Lia and the maltese viper in the middle of the park for me.

I think we need to be careful here. We were very successful last time as we shut down Smeltz with ease. Lately he hasn't been on form and they have been doing well regardless. There have been two wins and a draw for them since Smeltz last scored, so I hope that our tactics look at shutting down the likes of Porter (2 goals from their last three) as well

UPDATE: It was actually against Perth and, as reported on Radio Sport today, it's been successful...

The Wellington Phoenix have successfully overturned a yellow card given to midfielder Tim Brown during the recent away match against Perth.

The card was issued by rookie referee Ryan Shepherd early in the match, even though Brown was nowhere near the incident which led to it. Under the "mistaken identity" clause, the card has now been rescinded.

It is an important decision for Brown, who was sitting on seven yellow cards, just one short of a two-game suspension. His tally now drops back to six, with two regular season matches remaining, and will be wiped clean if the Phoenix make the playoffs.

The old mistaken identity clause.  Completely forgot about that.

That's brilliant news.  He still needs to tread carefully ofcourse.

Edit: does that mean whoever was at fault will get another yellow-card added to their name?

you may laugh, but he scored the winner against Sydney. No small feat. None of our star strikers have managed it this season. Then again, they only Nix player to score against them was Costa....

I know Porter has scored a couple recently and has assisted in a few goals but I can't help but laughing at him.  And that nose is massive!

In unrelated news I just watched Mad Max after hearing great stuff about it.

It is, without doubt, one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
