Phoenix vs Jets 4pm Sunday 7th

I'm rather upset that for the Phoenix's chances that our players won't be fully fit due to flying across the world days before such a big match. The whole thing is tricky though. The All Whites have to do what is best for them. A friendly in Mexico for World Cup preparation is obviously an awesome match for them. Not at all easy for the All Whites to get games like that. The World Cup is the biggest tournament in the world, so that really has to take priority.

Phoenix can't do anything about it because it's an international window. I can't see Ricki not picking them, or them refusing to play (please pull out though!!). Seems like it's just one of those really really sucky things that happens. ARGH! Angry.

Just out of interest (maybe wrong thread) - will Paston be playing in LA?

I do him but can't see him starting ahead of Reddy.

I can't see it being a problem, except injuries. The players will have trained like demons before heading to LA to play Mexico, will have a full 90 (give or take) under their belts, and if Ricki has any smarts, he'll make sure the players fly First Class there and back, so they don't have so many dramas with cattle-class seating etc (and can possibly sleep).

With half the squad staying in NZ, it will be up to the SQUAD to pull through against the Jets. It's not a team of 5 players after all.

I'm in  agreement there. Sure it's not ideal that some of the nix have to head away but those left behind make up an important part of the TEAM and the whole team will have to turn up on the 7th and do the business!!

Do any Newcastle players have Aussie duty, I know they get back earlier so the timing is not as bad, but would be nice if they suffered and injury or two.

I hope Tony S. is making a killing off this final run, after all the money he's pumped in knowing he'll lose it, it would be good if he got some kind of windfall.

Tony P or Terry S?   or another tony

Pretty sure Pasty ruled himself out of the Mexico game.

Disagree, do you play the better keeper, or the one who isn't suspended for the first two WC matches?

He shouldn't be too far off recovery.

Given that flying between Wellington and Australia (especially Perth!) seems to be a bit of a problem, I think this will be a problem for the players involved. Hopefully everyone can still step it up on the night though and you guys are right. Early goals please!!

Siggie, Lochhead, Brown, Bertos. The defenders are very key, especially with no Mckain. Brown has Muscat & Vinnie to cover him. Bertos has Daniel and Caeceres. Not that bad in my mind, complaining ain't gonna stop it.

The big trip from Perth didnt seem to worry them, they were all pretty lively. Its not ideal but its also not worth this much angst

Reddy is an Australian?

Also in terms of flying, the 5 hours from perth is exactly the worst amount of time. Slightly too long to sit around and listen to music/read a magazine/chat, but slightly too short to get anything more than a power nap.

Interestingly, time difference between Perth & Welly (5 hours)is greater than than between LA & Welly (effectively 3 hours). I'm sure with nutritionists etc pitching in, the impact of flight and time differences will be minimised - as well as flying in Business class. On the latter, it's a kinda pity we weren't playing Gold Coast as we could have stuck Smeltz back in Coach class and ensure he was next to the fattest man on the plane (no hang on, Clive has his own plane).

Back to topic, real concern is around injuries and inability to train as a full team in the week leading up. But it's not as though we haven't played together much as a team.

I know, I know, its serious!

Exactly. It's not as though they haven't played together much as a team.

Geez, if we can't trust them to know how to play together now, at the end of this long season, I think we might as well park the bus, and get ready for next season

Nice one, Addicks. You beat me to it.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Can't believe the amount of angst over the Mexico friendly. I mean, if I can play a game 24 hours after arriving from Europe on a 24-hour flight with a short stopover in LA, I'm sure professional footballers can cope too.

I'd expect Ricky to go easy on the Nix players and give them all an x-amount of minutes but not the full 90, and with a day's rest they should be absolutely fine for the Jets game (barring any unforeseen injuries).

Barring injury, the Phoenix AWs should be alright for the Jets.

McKain out (suspended) means Siggy will probably start, but he's been itching for game time since punching Leijer in early December.

Timmy I do worry for a little, but the man is an absolute warrior.

And Leo is probably gonna be the first guy subbed (due to all our options), and could even be brought off the bench.

As for the game, if we go into it with the right frame of mind, we should be okay. We've had success against Newcastle in the past.

Got my tickets!!! I've flown business class lots and all over- you feel fine on arrival, and I'm a fat older bloke, not a super-fit young professional footballer. The Jets are dead meat......

This travelling back whoha is interesting. I think we may start slow but in all honesty we should destroy Newcastle. Thats not cockiness thats common sense. I just feel real good about the Nix  and the way we're playing at this current juncture in time...Melbourne & Sydney will be trickier though.
Big ups to my good friend Big Al for getting the boys tickets sortedfor the Newc game.
