Perhaps another big factor to consider in why our crowd turnout was so good last year.. besides this year's economic downturn, lack of marketing, team performance etc, etc... was perhaps the backlash of the "floating" rugby crowd after last years world cup/rotation policy debacle..there seemed to be a feeling of "too much rugby" many people baying for blood, or Henry's head, and too much negativity in general if you recall the bad press at the time. In contrast, the football news in Wellington was all good.
Local Millionaire Terry Serepisos had stumped up the money at the 11th hour to rescue the rights to NZ's only professional football team,before some other aussie team could snafu it...and even better, its HERE in Wellington! WooHoo! The Phoenix were new,exciting and full of promise and so were its supporters, especially the highly organised, very vocal Yellow Fever...aahh, those were the days...
