The PSC final was the second biggest crowd we had this season. The only bigger crowd was the Round 1 game against Queensland.

So if we were to get 2,300 more than the PSC final crowd on Friday, I imagine everyone would be absolutely stoked.

Has it ever occured that some people may be short on cash during this credit crunch and therefore can't spend the money on a luxury like the 'nix Scottishbhoy2008-12-16 00:29:07

IMO the marketing is sh*t. It's the same for all A-League clubs.Obviously it also doesn't help that we have not lived up to the pre season hype.

It's a bit strange that we can only get 2,300 or so more than we got for the pre season cup final. It tells me that the only people who actually know the game is on are the people who would go to every game no matter what.

How do you mean, the marketing is bad?

What would you do to improve it then?

i'm no marketer, so will  make only one observation

last season, when you left the ground the posters for the next game would already be up on the bus-stops

yesterday the perth poster was still up at the bottom of cuba St

(yep, that's two observations )

I also note they've reverted back to last season's posters (the yellow with the black ribbons across it rather than the two fans faced away that they were using earlier this season).

I dunno. My builder, lawyer and dentist have given me a total of $4200 in Bills in the last 4 weeks and they say they haven't noticed any credit crunch and are doing fine. In fact the Dentist is very friendly - he waved out to me from his Porche the other day. The lawyer has kindly said not to pay the bill til just after Xmas "because I don't need it" and the builder says he's retiring in 2009.
I haven't seen them at Nix games

its the same for the whole A-League and it is a bit of a worry. Last game of last season we got 14,000. First game of this season we got about half that....even after all the publicity of making the preseason cup final. Its almost as if the off season was too long...people lost interest amd when the new season started it was not so trendy to go anymore. Who knows?

Unfortunately sports fans are fickle. If the Phoenix was dominating the A-League, winning most weeks then people would come. But crowds have been going down in all sports. Some rugby games you could hold the game in a phone booth and there would still be heaps of room.

The worry is the viability of the club. I remember from year one Tony P saying that just under 8000 was break even point. Well we have not got near that once. The Club must be lossing money. How long will Terry keep pouring money into it?

7800 was the crowd for the Melbourne game

does anyone think that the marketing behind the club feel that no matter how little or how much they promote the team / games that they wil always end up with a crowd of 6-7000 so rather than spend alot more on promotion they just settle fo rthat - economies of scale its called if my 5th form economics serves me correct.

(ie it's not cost effective to spend extra money on promotion)

A lot of other things will influence the crowd number as well as the cost and any marketing the Phoenix marketing and PR departments can do. I'd say the biggest thing in Wellington would be for the All Whites to qualify for the World Cup in 2010.

That qualification match is a little while off but if that happens, there's definitely going to be a bit more hype around football and higher crowds at Phoenix matches. In Australia, crowd numbers will go up when the Aussies qualify (and that's looking like a when, rather than an if, at this stage).

Of course, regardless of whether we qualify or not, crowd numbers for all A-League matches should rise and fall in a World Cup or Euro year, just because of the football hype in the media and all the coverage on TV. That's my theory anyway.

Sounds more like diminishing marginal returns to advertising rather than economies of scale.

If no marketing is done at all then the Phoenix brand as an entertainment product will dwindle out of consumers' mind, or their "evoked set of alternatives" in marketing speak. Ofcourse it is beneficil,l dont be so bloody negative! If you wanna help spread the word to some non believers and bring them along to a game.
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

Perhaps another big factor to consider in why our crowd turnout was so good last year.. besides this year's economic downturn, lack of marketing, team performance etc, etc... was perhaps the backlash of the "floating" rugby crowd after last years world cup/rotation policy debacle..there seemed to be a feeling of "too much rugby" many people baying for blood, or Henry's head, and too much negativity in general if you recall the bad press at the time. In contrast, the football news in Wellington was all good.
Local Millionaire Terry Serepisos had stumped up the money at the 11th hour to rescue the rights to NZ's only professional football team, before some other aussie team could snafu it...and even better, its HERE in Wellington! WooHoo! The Phoenix were new, exciting and full of promise and so were its supporters, especially the highly organised, very vocal Yellow Fever...aahh, those were the days... things will get better - the whole a-league is experiening lower crowd numbers, our total crowds are always lower cos we never get the away crowds. Admittedly the turnout is not as good as last year - possibly 2nd season blues, if the team continue to play good footy ie Melbourne and last Newcastle games and we finish 5th or top four(fingers crossed) nest season with a better draw ie no more sunday evening games, I think we'llk see better crowd numbers

For one thing, I would scrap the difference between Gold and Silver tickets - the pitch is too far away for Gold seats to even be any good, can't believe anyone pays the extra. 1 flat rate for tickets, and include prices on the adverts too. Not knowing how much it's going to be puts people off IMO. It's not hard to find out the price, but if we're talking about people who don't normally go, it could be the difference between going and not going.

Better pre match and half time entertainment when there would be good too - the atmosphere is good when the music finally comes on, but the same adverts EVERY single week are becoming pretty tiresome.

Isn't there any scope for lowering prices? Even to $25 a ticket would make a difference I think. People who prefer rugby are not going to pay more to see football are they?

Obviously the product on the park is the main marketing tool but there's not a lot more we can do to affect that.

Will be interesting to see the crowd on Friday with the 2 for 1 offer. If we can't crack 10,000 I will be seriously concerned.
