Good luck to the kid - I'm pleased he's got a couple of games to have a reasonable crack  - the away trip will be a buzz for him as well.

We must win this game if our top 4 aspirations are to have a realistic chance of being realised.

I hope Herbert and the team throw everything in to winning against Perth - the passion and commitment shown in beating Sydney and the skill we know Leo, Lei Lei, Daniel & co have.

I really want to see our front 4 back themselves to have a go - beat defenders and shot !!!

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Either way he will be a better impact player than Ferrante..

Wouldn't expect him to deliver miracles, though. Just glad Ricki has woken up to the fact that we need to give these guys a run because we may be in dire need of strikers/potential goal scorers next year. Also the fact that we lack pace (apart from Bertos and Gao at times)

So now we have Costa in the squad I guess the bench will look something like this - Moss, Ferrante/Coveny, Mckain/Daniel, COSTA COSTA BARBAROUSES!!!

I think it's been very tough for Ricki. Only being allowed minimal subs on the bench to choose from is very inhibiting, it means you've always got to cover your options. If he could take five subs and choose whover is right for a situation, then Costa and Draper would have a chance much more often.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Couldn't agree more, surely there aren't any clubs who are supportive of the 4 player maximium.

Against the gLOLry is the time to give one of the youth's a run, if we don't see them against gLOLry we won't see them at all.

Is there a particular reason that the Nix are the only team too scared to give the youths a run?

He picked it.
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

God there is some crap in here.

Last season the only player younger than Costa to get regular game time in the whole league was Tsatallios from Sydney.  Al the other 'youth' were generally 12 months older than him, as are most of those playing anything close to regular football this season.

To say we were the only ones who don't play youth doesn't remotely take in to account the fact that in the main we have had a fit squad and most of the youth getting a chance are cover for injured older players.

Also Costa plays in a position where we already have significant resources in Daniel, Leo, Gao, Kwasnik (even Mulligan or Smeltz at a pinch).

How's my driving? - Whine here

Boo hoo hoo, poor Ricki. Please give us a break.
Though 5 subs would be the obvious thing from the start, 4 gives the league a 'micky mouse' feel, its been the same for all coaches, hasn't it?

Yeah but Coveny is a lemon.

The anti-Nix brigade are out with the negative comments again.

Covs will start - that's bleeding obvious because of the last game. I agree he should have come off maybe 10 mins earlier to give Daniel more impact, but he'll start.
He's also playing because, as done to death elsewhere on here, the alternatives are a heap worse.

Anti Nix Brigade, mate your a .
Coveny is a lemon and would be better serving oranges.
Nothing "anti Nix" about it.

Good points. Also the fact that NZ players are arguably further behind in development compared to Australian players as NZ players do not have access to facilities like the AIS etc. + decent quality leagues like the VPL.

Still, he looked quite good from what we saw against CCM at the end of last year and I am suprised he hasn't gotten a go yet. Guess Ricki see's him everyday though and he would know if he was up to it yet.

Bloody good. Hope Costa gets a decent run, though he's got a bit to compete with if he's to gain a starting spot out wide in future. Kwasnik has been unbelievably average, but Gao and Bertos should be pretty solid. I'd like to see Costa replace Coveny personally... or for Ricki to give Draper a go up front. Can't fault Covs for effort, but he's got nothing once he's got the ball at his feet... jamesnz2008-10-29 22:39:17

re Costa's elevation to the squad, i wonder if Ricki has asked Terry S for a signing in the window and has been told to give Costa a run first

Pffttt that's why when I put my squad in I picked Draper not Costa, coz Greg is more of an out and out striker.

I don't want to see this turn into another 'who is more worthy, Greg vs Costa' thread, which it seems in danger of... they both offer something different to the team I feel, Costa as a fast wide player, and Greg as a strike partner for Smeltz.  Draper doesn't have the hype (and lets face it, it is a hype really) around him that Costa does, but I don't think that means he is any less worthy of a place in the squad... he has seen gametime in the U20 WC, the Olympics and the A-league, he has been receiving good reviews from Nix training (unfortunately living in PN I'm unable to give any of my own), and he scored two goals against HBU in the most recent Nix 'reserve team match'. I feel he is just as worthy of a place in the side as Costa is. In saying that I hope we see good things from Costa this weekend, and hope to see similar from Greg soon.

I hope that made some sense, and didn't bring us closer to GD vs CB.

Absolutely Zero times.....I havent been given any opportunity too....and I cannot attend training as I live out of Wellington, I do come down for every home game though...

I am just going from what I have heard about him, I just called for Draper over Costa because he is an out and out striker, we have millions of options in midfield....and I think Cov's is letting us down...

Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely DELIGHTED to see Costa in, I hope he turns it on on SUnday!

is it deemed a failure on the clubs and rickis behalf or a disappointment in the player, if after their contracts are fulfilled and they are to old for the U20 spots that they are not resigned?

Both but if the player gets a decent go and doesn't  'make it', the player only has himself to blame

I really wanna see Daniel start this weekend.

Covs hasn't been doing enough for me and I almost ripped my hair out watching Leilei against QLD (although at least he was getting a bit more involved).

Can't decide who i'd rather see dropped out of Covs and Leilei though.

Bertos has to start on the right, although i've still got visions of his miss. I think I actually cried

I've seen Draper play a reasonable few games and he has been far more impressive than Costa (from what little I've seen of Costa mind you).  On that basis, and the fact Draper is a naturally out and out striker, I'd pick Greg ahead of Costa.

Draper is class, seen him many times here in CHCH... Don' think Costa is the option Phoenix are looking for...Would of preferred Mr D out there..

, o.m.g. maybe both on the field at the same time, Draper in for the old man and Costa for a half-arsed midfielder.

...are two of the best players in the league. Young, exciting players are not as known for being marquees and top goalscorers. I think people generally attach the fresh and exciting with the flashy names

You need to get over yourselves. Valeo, you're treating Costa like a god, with only seeing him play what once or twice.. (one was a LA pointless match).. I hope he impresses but i think you're all expectig WAY to much from him.
