Phoenix vs Roar - Wednesday - Dunners

So what I am gathering from this thread is that people are happy to be Phoenix fans as long as they can do it on the days between Friday and Sunday inclusive!

Lets just all be grateful that we have a team to support no matter where or when they play.

And remember it was the FFA's decision to play in Dunedin on a Wednesday not the clubs or its supporters so lets just accept that and get on with supporting the team!

I would dearly love to be down in Dunedin for this match but that looks extremely unlikely given my current employment predicament but that is not going to stop me from getting behind the match and embracing the FFA's initiative of showing off the A-League to centres outside of its normal reach.

My main concern is this:

1. Make it work and Dunedin may be seen as the place for midweek fixtures (which draw smaller crowds/atmosphere, etc.).

2. "Fail", and we lose future games.

To me it's kind of lose-lose but I'm over that now. I'm moving forward now and won't mention this here ever again (I'll go on record for this).

Although, my honourable and esteemed colleague, C-Didds, I think that the Southern Chapter bretheren are perhaps more concerned about crowd numbers than their own actual attendance.

To which I can sympathise - especially if these "regional" games are to increase coverage and grow the game.

Remember this is an FFA thing.

Likelyhood of them repeating the exercise is quike high as they like to show off their product in nice shiny new stadia whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Well spoken C-Diddy I'll vote for your party, purhaps the moaning mob should start applying for jobs as PR reps for Wellnix then they can make the rules. Unfortunatly there are always those who would moan at anything, never happy, some people just have a sad life.

Get a life people as C-Diddy says be grateful we have a team. Ok we aint had a good start but we cant go much lower the way back can only be up.

AS for the other four locations:

Morwell, VIC: A dentists dream town which is also home to massive power stations. Has previously hosted pre-season matches and was home to the Morwell Falcons in the old NSL. It's a region that I believe the FFA hopes to re-establish a side one day.

Bathurst, NSW: Redneck Central! The only reason I can see for a match being played here is that other than Wollongong (who believe that they should get an A-League Licence), it is the next largest centre in NSW without an A-League club and predominantly a Rugby League town so the FFA looks to be trying to recruit supporters from the enemy!

Campbelltown, NSW: Western Sydney is football heartland. Easy choice. Keeps Western Sydney Rangers fans happy until the FFA can find somebody in that part of the world who hasn't their money from drug running to cough up the millions required to run a football franchise. Also the region is home to a new AFL club, Greater Western Sydney so FFA attempting to keep football at the forefront of the minds of the locals.

Launceston, TAS: Incestuous town in Tasmania. FFA has also explored this option a few times before as Tasmania is the only state along with the Northern Territory that doesn't have either an AFL or NRL Franchise. Big crowd guaranteed if everybody brings their sexual partners along to the match!

I'm going! Staying with my grandad, and taking him to the game, so going to the YF function before the game may not happen for me...

Facebook event created:

Please "attend" even if you can't make it to the game, the purpose being that this is an easy way to post the message up on your wall and let your friends know about it, and building the numbers up also looks good.

What does Wellington typically get for a midweek game in terms of a crowd? And what was the Boca midweek crowd again? 12,000? And have there ever been any other midweek games played by the Phoenix outside of Wellington but within NZ?

Backpackers/hotel/motel/B&B/homestay? For 1 or share?

And how much do you want to spend ideally?

My holidays may have to start early this year, would love to catch round two at the lunchbox/greenhouse/box of fire.

Would the temporary seating still be up then or will it just be the north and south stands?

That's something I am in the process of trying to confirm. Also need to work out best Fever Zone if the stands are gone...

Permalink Permalink

Personally I reckon one end of the south stand, if not where we were last time.

Yeah can't see North working to be honest.

For those that were there in August, what were your general thoughts about the Fever Zone and do you have any complaints/suggestions?

Permalink Permalink
over 14 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Fever Zone was good for the pre-season, the West Stand was a place where we could make a lot of noise which was ideal.
I do think the South  Stand would be more appropriate is well since I'm pretty sure it is the main stand in the stadium and is the biggest, so one end of that would be good.
So yea, I can't really make any evaluations though, as in the best for acoustics etc

Sorry to come back to you late, have been spending today trying to get a package of discounts for fans for the event but I don't think there will be many hotel/motel offers forthcoming because Wed 14 Dec is a graduation day.

As such I would suggest you make your booking as soon as possible so that you get a central location rather than be pushed further out. All the prices seem to be around the $115-125 mark for a studio room 1-2 persons so sounds like it's within budget.

Here are a list of the MOTELS that are between the Octagon and University (only 10-15 minutes stroll between so anywhere in this zone is "right in town"):

97 Motel Moray

Alexis Motor Lodge (Motel)

Farrys Motel

And finally there is Allan Court Motel. These guys are a bit more expensive but they have a 4 star+ rating and were really nice when I had a chat to them about the Nix game. They also have free wireless internet. If anyone decides to book with them please do tell them that Ahmad from Yellow Fever recommended booking with them!

Allan Court Motel

These would be my initial recommendations for a motel and I suspect their rooms will fill quickly especially as there will be a graduation ceremony on the afternoon of Dec 14.
