Seems a lot of People went to Palmy expecting a hole, so got a hole.  Yes the stadium is crap (the speedway track makes viewing poor, but it brings in a sh*tload of money).  But Palmy the city has a heap to do if you want to find it rather than whinge and moan, and really as Wellingtonians, can you seriously complain about the wind?

The occasion to celebrate was being out with the Yellow Fever!  In that light, we were actually a bit subdued.

Also, everyone in Palmy was incredibly friendly.  Retailers seemed to be trying to convince us that it was worth coming back, while the girls seemed to find hoarse men wearing football scarves exotic and appealing.

fully agree with that. made the trip up with two others, convinced five of our mates who have never been to the nix to come along. not a great game but still enjoyed ourselves. then spent the night in a bar that had as many girls in it as guys, and that never happens in Wellington.

Unless the girls are 15 and so drunk theyre vomiting everywhere.

Sounds like the roadtrip and being out in the pub in a foreign town after was the best thing about it,game and venue being rubbish.

Allegedly

There was no 'celebration' as such. Some drinking, and then some moaning about the game, followed by more drinks.

Just a normal night out but we happened to be wearing Phoenix gear after a sh*t game!

Would have been a shame to have just headed back to the hotel sulking.

If I'd had fresh batteries in my camera there would have been a lot more running amok and enthusing with the locals.  And I definitely would have pulled the bird in the $1000 dress!

I would rather have travelled to watch the game at Park island in Napier! But as someone suggested, Porirua Park and a 5pm KO would've seen the game finish in daylight with a happy crowd and a lot better atmosphere than standing out in the barren waste lands of a stock car track.

Never again Tony, never allow this to happen again.
Agreed.  A useful experiment I guess but it backfired and was no real home advantage.  Whoever thought it would be good to play somewhere with a big dirt track and caged fencing around the pitch needs a slap.  I'm dreading Christchurch now!!  How is that going to help our play off prospects?

We played like crap, worst game i have seen in a long time.

Players need to start looking at themselves a little bit, wither that or give the fringe players a shot and see if they stand up.

So he let in how many goals? and that one was a penalty. He had a good game and will be ok as a replacement for the rest of the year.

Thankfully I don't have to hear them.

On the game, dreadful game, enjoyed the bus ride though (cheers Smithy).

Not sure if the Fever sounded great, cause in the middle of it it sounded like we were out of time, starting different chants at the same time etc. But it was pretty noisy.

I think the dickheads to the right of us had something to do with that. They attempted to start a few chants off but after the first line it was obvious that they didn't actually know the words and they just descended into silly little giggles.

Agree totally with this.  FMG Stadium is naff.

BUT everything else about our trip was good:

Saturday:

1.  Got lost in the new carpark at the Plaza and in the Plaza itself (just like any other mall in the world) - free carparking for two hours.

2. Kids got talking to a couple of local lads at Milverton Park  - one of whom was one of the flag bearers at the match.

3. Match (CENSORED)

Sunday:

1. Visit the Farmers Santa Cave/Basement.  50c entry to sit on the old guy's knee and get  a sweety (plus some cool displays that haven't changed in years and a merry-go-round that the kids peddle themselves.

2. Te Manawa - best science museum in the country.  Last day for a spy exhibition - why doesn't Te Papa get these sorts of activties?

3. Esplanade - tried out the mini railway and its extended tracks. $2 return ticket.

We like coming back every few years.  However 12 Dec 2009 will remain our dirty little secret and FMG stadium will never be mentioned again.

Who cares what Palmy night life was like - had to get back down the road after the match, and judging by the traffic that's what most people did.

Point is it was a two finger salute to the season ticket holders.

I was looking more or less in line from behind them and Brosque managed to get in front and McKain clipped him.  In that type of situation if the man goes down with contact, a penalty is going to be called. I thought it was a penalty and I thought the ref had a good game. I thought the linesmen were a bit slow but pretty accurate in the main.

What did amaze me was the amount of cafes/restaurants that were closing or closed down at 5pm. Ended up walking from the stadium to the Nightflyer in search of food. Even the fish and chip or burger places were closed along the way. We bumped into nix fans coming from another direction whom also experienced the same. Yet for a town that not only had 6k showing up for a game of football but also had the pipe band thingy going, no one really seemed interested in making some money out of the night.

Well done Nightflyer though, you guys were good, the service was great and the Pizza was awesome!

Again, got to the live match and after reading some of the comments on here, wondered if i was at the same game. Sure the result was dissappointing but we were competitive against the number 2 club in the league. I didn't think any of our guys played particularly badly and a draw or win either way would have been a fair result on the day. We certainly weren't outclassed. the only real chance that Sydney had [apart from those saved] was when Brosque was brought down, he was on his way to a 1 on 1 with Crowther.

In terms of tactics/what we need; I still think we need a Rory Fallon [for example] type of player as a target man.

Just because a penalty was awarded doesn't mean it was automatically a red card.

hmmm

The closest shot we had to being on target all night was from Crowthers long punt up the park.

f**k there are some miserable c**ts on here.  It's not a two finger salute to season holder to have to play a game away from home because the stadium needs to get re-turfed.  Porirua wouldn't be able to hold enough people.  The only other place it could possibly be played in Wellington is the basin. And that is out of action because of cricket.  Plus it doesn't meet the minimum requirments set out by the FFA.  And its a far cheaper option to travel to palmy than napier or hamilton.
So quit your f**king whinging and embrace a new experience.

Rant over.

That's the 3rd time they've beaten us this season now. Don't forget that teams all operate with effectively the same budget, a team shouldn't be dominating us and taking 9 points out of 9 from us IMO.

'Competitive' is not enough I'm afraid.

Sydney weren't great either, I can agree with that, but Phoenix were close to woeful.

If we agree that the first foul was by Brosque and it wasn't given then the only other logical thing to happen was the penalty and the red card.

The fact that Brosque wasn't pinged may not have been obvious to everyone (I missed it until I saw the replay) but the red not pulled was a bigger laugh. Missed the first foul and missed the send off.

What part of that is not 'deliberately stopping Brosque from scoring?'

I wonder if the match looked any better live. It certainly was absolute rubbish to watch on the telly. We could have still been playing and would not have scored. On a slightly brighter note, I thought McKain was okay given his layoff (despite what was definitely a penalty), Troy was reasonably sound, Crowther did what was necessary desppite a few scares with clearances. Bertos looked tired flat and disinterested, Caceras was rubbish, Lia was no better. The Wheels seem to have fallen off since 14 Nov!

It's not hating to have expectations of someone of his calibre and then expect him to deliver on them. Just because we're playing a TINA system up front with Chen poor and Costa exciting, but not yet a dependable or composed striker doesn't mean there aren't alternatives to the up front tactics we were using.

Why would you put Ifill on holding up the ball duties? When he got wide we nearly scored.

Also the last two times we've played Sydney they've schooled us on how to pass a football...It's not about having one midfielder who can pass it's about the whole team knowing where each other will be and having the skills to play a quick passing game.
