Yeah this annoyed me a bit, find a club whos going to play their top side or dont play at all. Wouldve been better organising a game against Upper Hutt or Island Bay or someone, you wouldnt get any excuses from those guys.

Remembering that of Miramar's first team Tom Doyle was playing for the Phoenix.  Justin Gulley is injured, as is Patrick Fleming.  The club is playing a lot of second team players in the first squad due to injury and suspension so that may have been the best they had.

A game against Upper Hutt on their new turf would be great  - I assume they have lights

That's the last one for a while anyway as they leave for Aus/India later this week and aren't back until early September.

Will any of the pre season games be televised?

Permalink Permalink

Almost certainly not.  A-League vs A-League friendlies aren't normally and last I heard India were trying to arrange some but it didn't look likely.

Wonder if the club could sort out a live stream for us? At least get someone filming so we can watch highlights or something.

I don't think its finished yet, the weather has been causing issues. And TopLeft07 pointed out they tend to avoid playing/training on turf.

I went down there a few weekends ago and its pretty sweet - they have a small training area with goals that can be moved around which was pretty cool.

Didn't realise it wasnt open yet - but what a great way to make an official opening - plus could be a good time before Upper Hutt's promotion game seeing as they have a big break before they play it I understand

Who is our whipping boy this season now that Timmy has gone?

Vinnie, Leo? Or one of the young ones?

The Nix defense was weird and unnecessarily stretched at times in the first half. Bertos and lochead were pushed way up,almost like wingbacks. That left siggy and dura getting sucked apart and out wide.

But they weren't put under much constant pressure,so wasn't much of an issue in the game. Just an observation of some odd positional play (or formation experimentation?).

Yeah deffo playing like wingbacks for the first part of the match. I can't see them adopting this though come the season.

I thought the youngests were great charging around really fearless - Enjoyable night.

I rung up and they said the aisle next to it has heaps of seats left so I will probably be going there...although I could imagine being yelled and for standing and such

Surely if someone got in touch with the stadium authorities about 'expanding' the fever zone beacuse there are more people interested (I am not sure how many though), they might look into it?
The club also needs to sign two under-21 players and all seven Phoenix academy members will board the plane today for the pre-season tour of Australia and India.
Isn't there 9 of them? Have a couple of them been grounded because they stayed up past their bed times?

[Edit: also, I assume Pav will be meeting up with the squad in Newcastle?]

Yip there are 9 - a few maybe unfit though.

Its great so many are going, as originally they said maybe 2 or 3 would go. But I guess the number of injuries are having a part to play.

Yeah that's what the players and coaches have told me. I suspect that's why they played miramar out in porirua - not many grounds with lights that aren't turfs. Most club teams can only play mid week at night at the momeny. They use Newtown 2 most days though. So basically they will avoid it if possible but if they have to play on turf to get games against decent(ish) opposition then they will.

Fuck this stupid game

Did someone mention a couple of them playing in the Chatham Cup instead of going on the tour of India?

The Wellington Phoenix will be without six players on their pre-season soccer tour of India.

A 21-strong group left for Australia, where they will play A-League rivals the Newcastle Jets on Saturday night.

They then travel on to India for matches against four I-League opponents.

Veteran goalkeeper Mark Paston will return to New Zealand following the Newcastle match ahead of the pending birth of his third child.

Four injured players are unavailable for the tour - Vince Lia, Jimmy Downey, Dani Sanchez and Lucas Pantelis - while Mirjan Pavlovic is still on loan in Australia.

Phoenix tour squad:

Mark Paston, Glen Moss, Manny Muscat, Tony Lochhead, Michael Boxall, Alex Smith, Leo Bertos, Paul Ifill, Benjamin Totori, Jeremy Brockie, Cameron Lindsay, Ben Sigmund, Andrew Durante, Scot Basalaj, Justin Gulley, Luke Rowe, Tom Doyle, Tom Biss, Alec Solomons, Tyler Boyd, Louie Fenton

So no Hamish Watson, and Pavlovic staying in Aussie. Very surprised about Pav, if we loaned him out to get match fitness surely we would want him travelling with us. Maybe we are hoping he impresses the Wanderers?

Maybe part of the loan deal was that they wanted him for a certain amount of time. Ideally he would be with the squad thoug.

Allegedly

There was commentary of the Jets last local game on these ones

Not 100% sure if the newyboys one will have commentary, they were asking on their forums for someone to do it tonight.

Reports of bomb blasts in Imphal...

This is my favourite bit:

David Dome wrote:
It's like any large city in the world - New York, London, Glasgow - there's incidents like this all the time

Yeah, very naive! Not at all comparable to those international cities where you might have one terrorist incident a decade - Imphal's much more dangerous! Incidents occur every single year...North East is the third most terrorism-prone area of India after Janmu-Kashmir and the Pakistan border and the UK government warn against all travel to Manipur state and all but essential travel to the capital Imphal.

The major cities like Delhi and Mumbai have terrorist incidents but the risk is acceptable. I visited Delhi two months after the High court was bombed last year killing a dozen and injuring sixty, including a foreign tourist, and although there's armed soldiers and sandbags all over town you don't feel threatened. Security remains tight in all major Indian cities.

The Imphal blasts happened on Indian Independence Day and most were in the area around the parade ground where official  celebrations were occuring. A young girl died and the Chief Minister was hospitalised from shock after collapsing during the blasts.

The authorities can't absolutely guarantee security in situations like the Phoenix will be facing. Times of India on the blasts:

"... the blasts, suspected to be triggered by militants, which took place despite elaborate security arrangements in view of militants' call for a boycott of the celebration."

By the way, despite what the Phoenix and the NZ media have been saying about it being a four-team tournie, it's in fact a three team tournament with the Nix guaranteed two games and the top two teams playing in a final.
