I'd say he'll start game 1. Then yes, anything can happen. He could get injured, be rubbish yet somehow be starting for costa rica, sleep with Ernies Wife and end up out of the matchday squad. Who knows.

But as of now, I think you can safely say that Ernie Merrick signed Kenny Cunnilingus as a starting player.

People, people.
It's compared with not compared to.
You are making a comparison between similar things.  If you wanted to compare a player with an egg ball player or a donkey you would use "to".

You are comparing a guy that plays up front/wide upfront to a midfielder/wide midfielder. The comparison is not the same! That's the point I am trying to make. If they played the same position, sure compare their strike records. They don't so the comparison is pointless. Do you compare Ivan Vicelichs goal scoring record the Shane Smeltz? No because they do not play the same position.

That would be the basis of our difference of opinion on this.  Looking into it a bit more was interesting.
Everything i've found has Cunningham listed as a striker/CF/left wing/right wing and as far as i can tell he seems mostly striker/CF

In the games that i can find where his playing position is listed he is down as a forward or striker

including internationals - this friendly v Canada

http://m.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/05/27/canada-vs-costa-rica-international-friendly-preview

but this one he is listed as midfiled

http://www.goal.com/en-us/match/114579/usa-vs-costa-rica/preview

as far as i can find at san carlos, where he has played most of his games, he was at striker (16 goals in 67)

http://www.costaricanewssite.com/saprissa-eliminated/

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/cs-cartagines-ad-san-carlos/index/spielbericht_2264171.html subbed off as striker

ditto for Carmelita where he played his next highest number of games, the very few bits of web info i can find has him at forward

we announced him as a "star striker" but also talk about him being a speedy winger
Wellington Phoenix head coach Ernie Merrick describes the signing of Costa Rican international striker Kenny Cunningham as a major coup for the A-League club.

New coach Ernie Merrick yesterday landed his second Costa Rican international, signing speedy winger Kenny Cunningham on a two-year contract.

Merrick said Cunningham was as ''quick as anything'' going around in the A-League, with skill and goal-scoring instincts to boot.

''Not only can Kenny score goals and set them up, but he's very good one-on-one,'' Merrick said.

''Those strikers are always the most difficult to find and the most expensive to pay for because they can just create something themselves. He has tremendous pace and dribbling ability.''

i'm not getting the basis for this apparantly robust view of yours that Huysegems and Cunningham have been playing in totally different positions over their careers or recently
hence our difference of opinion
i'm not here to score points, but what i've read and heard suggests kenny has been playing primarily as a forward, so the comparison of their records looks valid
but if you can point me to any contrary information i am happy to be enlightened
but regardless hopefully he's a very quick goal scoring machine

Merrick seems to consider anyone in the front third a striker, including Leo for instance.

All the international appearances Cunningham has had that I've found he plays in as wing or wide mid. Just saying.

Really all of out strikers can play wide or central and Cunningham's pace would be more useful wide.

ok well you have you have done some work on this so fair play to you. My basis comes from the following:
1: Ernie himself said he is playing a 4-2-3-1 with Stein/Brockie in a shoot out up top, Carlos in the middle, and the two flanks with be the Bertos/Ifill/Cunningham/Boyd quad, manny in behind, another DM - amen
2: The recent qualifying games he had played for Costa Rica, 2nd best has reliably informed us he has played as a CM/LM/RM

Now I respect you've done a shit load of research above and on that basis alone, well the evidence is overwhelming, however the coach made a statement on what he is going to do, and the recent games he has played, have not been as a striker. If he was a striker, quite frankly his record screams do not sign him. So when you take that as fair, then it's logical he is not signed as a striker.

Has anybody got details of the Newcastle game; as in where it's going to be played, kick off time etc? There's no mention of it on either the Phoenix or the Jets websites. Living on the West Island the off season is too long, I need to see some football!

It was probably Ricki worried about how bad it would look if he lost. Crazy that they've never played ACFC before, being that they're a decent side and not that far away

Didn't Domey mention a behind closed door game against Sydney after the Jets game? That bridges the gap a little.

*deliberate troll* (or those with a bit of humour)

This is the form responses being printed for the knitting circle as we speak

Strong Nix v Strong ACFC - win to nix = Excuse: Well you are Pros, you should win
Strong Nix v Strong ACFC - win to ACFC = We're the 5th best team in the world blah blah
Strong Nix v Weak ACFC - win to nix = Excuse: it was not our top side
Strong Nix v Weak ACFC - win to ACFC = We're the 5th best team in the world blah blah
Weak Nix v Strong ACFC - win to nix = Excuse: You've had a long preseason
Weak Nix v Strong ACFC - win to ACFC  = We're the 5th best team in the world blah blah
Weak Nix v Weak ACFC - win to nix = Excuse: You've had a long preseason
Weak Nix v Weak ACFC - win to ACFC = We're the 5th best team in the world blah blah

The Phoenix fans response
ACFC win = well done, good luck to you. WTF is up with our team, we don't know what we're doing, its Lochheads fault
Nix win = Stick that up ya knitters. Ernie is on track. Ricki would not have gotten that result.

The knitters are already saying that Ricki rightly feared playing ACFC for precisely that reason. But luckily Ernie has balls of Glasgow shipyard steel, or else understands that knitters are irrelevant to the world of professional football.

I met quite a few at the 2006 NZFC final at NHS. I probably would have kept going to ACFC matches, if their bitter hatred of the Phoenix hadn't put me off.
