I reckon the player who will really shine this year under Ernies new style will be Huysegems. He is the one guy who looks like he has the skills to benefit from a "ball on the deck, pass and move game". Stein really struggled under Ricki last year...Rickis game(whatever it was) did not suit him at all. A big year coming up for Steiny IMO

again.. dont let the cat out of the bag...queue another Gareth picture.

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

Should we be concerned we let  two in verses this mob?

Pretty much gave both of them away. Honestly the 2nd goal was the biggest howler you have ever seen. Words cannot describe it.

we haven't got anyone else to push Moss for a starting spot have we?

Only problem with Stein is that he has no right foot whatsoever. He has a really good left foot, but his right is only used for standing on.

beginning to get worried about the depth of our squad again. And who the hell in our team is going to make tackles. Some of the contributions last season were lightweight and apart from Hernandez we haven't added starters or people who will push incumbents. Merrick will have to get a lot more out of the existing players. Also think Manny is better at right back, but it seems he obviously isn't going to have a chance there with Merrick.

And the Louis for Leo is also another bit of tactical Mickey Mouse that hopefully will come off with a bit of coaching. Also we seem to have fewer Kiwis genuinely pushing for a start.

Be interesting to see how our squad shakes out up front- Leo/Brockie/Stein/Hernandez/Ifill/Cunningham perhaps/Boyd

The good thing is you definitely sense Ernie has a plan to score goals, and it doesn't involve leading the balls into the box stat. And that these players are quick and will benefit from fast ball movement.

Nope

So Moss is the scapegoat for this season then? Guess one of them does always have to be a keeper.
I kind of think that having 2 senior starting keepers (ie moss and paston) on the books is a waste of cap space. You're better off having a youngster, then if moss goes down you can always sign an emergency replacement.

Nope

Italiano is still with Oakleigh to get game time. Sounds like he was very highly recommended.

Just some comments from Merrick via Sam Worthington

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/8959030/Merrick-sees-a-bright-future-for-young-Rufer

Merrick was pleased with patches of Tuesday's win, just their second pre-season hit-out following the 4-0 defeat of Wellington Olympic.

He was "really happy" with both Caira and Louis Fenton, who is being converted into a right back.

Vince Lia and Manny Muscat predictably bossed central midfield for most of the match, although Merrick said at times they started to try and create too much going forward."

"You've got to be a bit more patient and not try and rush it and force it forward."

On Caira

"It's good to have that sort of quality of player keen on coming to Phoenix because he played every [World Cup] qualifying game for the [Australian] under-20s. He's had three and a half years at Aston Villa so a good background. He can play in two positions, at Aston Villa he was switching between left back and centre mid because he's a tenacious ball winner, he's quick and he's a good passer of the ball. I'm a big fan of that sort of flexibility."

On Rufer

"I was impressed with young Alex Rufer at training but tonight the nervousness showed," Merrick said after the match at Porirua Park.

"He was just too nervous trying to play one-touch on a bumpy pitch but he's been very impressive at training."

He had one shocker but I think it's a bit early to start looking for replacements yet. Everyone can misjudge the bounce on a cut up rugby pitch every now and then. There was nothing else in the game to make me feel at all nervous about him starting for us.

moss isn't so good with his feet.  he makes a few clangers here.  so i get nervous whenever a defender rolls the ball back to him.  other than that, he's a mighty fine keeper.

Yeah that was crap wasn't it? He is also scared to use his right boot for anything than standing on.

yep - he scored a very good goal with his right foot about 8 years ago - definetly a proper two footed player

Ah yeah - is it a bit easier on the joints? Not a fan of artificial turf at all. I know it's a bone of contention for most MLS supporters too after reading the Toronto forums a bit this season.

I believed A-League games could not be on an artificial for insurance reasons. But this is just practice.
