Agree with some of what you say but Manny dead wood? I rate him. Similarly Stein is good when used properly and with the right support and there's been pre-season matches where he's shone apparently. Lia, yep, he should be at least put on notice.

Do you rate Manny when he is playing or when he is sitting out his every season red card?
2 reds in 5 seasons. Manny has had 1 bad season out of 5 but who did have a good year last season?

Without looking up the stats (can't be arsed!) I would suggest Manny has served at least one suspension every season. That said still rate him as good enough to make an impact this year

I had a pretty decent year last year.  A few holidays, some decent nights out, no hideous diseases contracted.  All in all, I'd consider it a good year.

I as trying to think what was lacking and I think it was "intensity". That's what the Phoenix were missing. In the first half ACFC had it and could have scored three but for Spoonley's heroics. In the second half ACFC sat deeper hoping to catch the Nix on the break primarily through lack of match fitness, and yet with plenty of possession the Nix midfield still didn't really put them under pressure. The solid ACFC defence wasn't greatly troubled by either Brockie or Stein. Part of that was due to a lack of defence splitting passes from a creative midfielder coupled with a lack of pace from your wide players. I was surprised because I thought you were really going to come on strong in the second half.

I just hope Hernandez can deliver high tempo creativity in midfield and Cunningham some accurate punch up front because I really don't think you can rely on the ageing injury prone legs of Ifill anymore.

To me you needed a Michael Essien type driving you forward, a role Chris Bale did well for ACFC. For all the talk of a DM being needed, I think you need a midfield general to drive the momentum. Where's Roy Keane when you need him. Someone to scare Brockie awake.

I honestly think he gets lots of ref-attention because he always looks angry. I think the first time I saw him smile, ever, was when he scored that 1st goal.

Meaningless game and meaningless result... Maybe.

If something good could be taken from it, perhaps that could be increased visibility for the under funded, under appreciated asbp. Perhaps, along with acfc's positive result against ccm a couple of years ago we could finally see that our own league is worth attending. That it is worth investing time, money, resources and media coverage in because as well as providing the majority of nzers with a meaningful competition that is accessible to more than just Wellington, that the standard is decent also...

Sadly, I don't see this as a likely outcome. Once the glamourous Australian team rolls out of town, the media lights and football fans will go home and wait for the next time a 'quality' overseas team comes to town.

Another good thing about this game is that it provides ACFC with some reasonable quality pre-season opposition.

And hopefully provide ACFC with some much needed funding for the upcoming o-league and club World Cup campaigns.

Man, you're either a troll, or mildly developmentally impaired.

NZF don't give the ASBP the love it deserves. But under-funded? When your club has the budget it has? Hardly. Maybe ACFC could divert some money from the squad into promoting fixtures and try to draw a crowd themselves?

Remember Welnix? Them what own the licence for the Nix. They're sinking their money into the Phoenix. And that money is what brings the bright lights and media.

Stop being so God damned miserable. Lots of good can and did come from that game. I hope it happens every year.

Heaven's above Smithy, is there a cure? Will therapy help?

Actually I'd love the Phoenix to win the A League this season, then we can say we've beaten the A League champions - just a minute, didn't CCM win the title the year we beat them? Sorry, we've done that already. Seriously, I want all the NZ teams to do well. perhaps not WU because you've got to hate someone, don't you JV?

You mean the previous post where I said that people were doing the drive and I was seriously considering flying up? And contrasted that with Aucklanders who wouldn't cross town to watch?

We all know there are football fans who will go anywhere to watch their team and fairweather fans who will turn out if the stars align - like a sunny day, a much hyped match, the team on a good run and the ground close to home. Unfortunately, as you guys know, the hard core fans are outnumbered by the fairweather fans.

To those who didn't come to Kiwitea Street to see ACFC vs Phoenix, well you missed a cracker of a game. However it was a pretty full house so I'm not sure we could have fitted many more in anyway. To those Phoenix fans who drove/flew up from Wellington, good on you. Just like the ACFC fans planning to fly down to Wellington for ACFC vs Team Wellington next month. Those away trips are a great day out. To me that's what being a football fan is all about.

So I was in Auckland for a long weekend up from Welly and I went along to the game on Saturday - Nice set up at Kiwitea street. I sat in the grandstand about 6 rows below the Auckland City FC core supporters. Around me were families with kids supporting ACFC. Strange, I didn't see an knitting needles???

My take on the whole experience: I loved it - I didn't have any pre hopes for the game, just that I was there to watch a game of football...

The weather - typical Auckland 4 seasons in one day (but cleared come game time)

Pre-Match entertainment - Some fella rocking out to Thin lizzy singing 'the boys are back in town' over and over and over and over... but the crowd in the stand liked it.

Game Time - Well Auckland City came to play from the start and the Nix didn't, ACFC should of scored within the first minute.....hit the post. That set the tone for the first half with ACFC having multiple chances - backed up by some great saves from Spoonley. With the Nix having a couple of chances one by Sigmund that needed a top save from the Auckland keeper.

If things has panned with that first shot going in it could have been 3-1 easily at halftime.

Second Half - Coaches ring the changes and the Nix start to get more ball. but can't do much with it.

Auckland scored a late goal that was a bit out of nowwhere from where i was sitting in the stand and I thought Moss should have saved it. However, the Auckland fans were up and at 'em when they scored - Well done! And with Auckland winning the game it was a fair result. (It could have been 5-2 if some of the shots had beaten the keepers)

So, I was impressed with ACFC and the fans had there chants going from time to time. I'd welcome more games in the future as some have mentioned prior. Either @ Kiwitea again or in Welly.

Both teams played below strength linups - would the result have been different if both were at full strength? - is irellevant untill it actually happens...

I can't wait for the inter squad game on Sunday!

Cheers,

Just
