yeah right, welnix would never want to spend the millions required to build a new stadium! and even if the did, where would they put it?

Major League Sports teams in the States hold their City Councils over a barrel, forcing them to invest in stadiums for them to use. You are probably thinking of European Football clubs, most of which have owned the land their stadiums sit on for decades which were bought at a pittance.

Ignore the money side of things, where would you build a stadium for the Phoenix then?

a purpose built stadium would have meant I wouldnt have confused Cunningham with Gulley on Sunday viewing them from "200m" away...that or a visit to Spec savers.

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

A perfect site for a new Phoenix stadium would be the gravel pit on the corner of Munroe and Raffles Street. Land is currently land banked for iwi settlement.

Let me emphasise that a great stadium is a piece of garbage if it's in the wrong place. Exhibit A: NHS. The only place you could fit a new stadium in Wellington proper (i.e. not the Hutt or the Coast) would be Rugby League Park.

So the council should fund a smaller stadium to compete with the stadium they already own?

build two new ones, then let the punters vote

In an x-factor style made-for-tv fapfest. That'd be tops.

I remember last year one member of Welnix was keen to build a dedicated stadium

Wasn't that hugely misreported?

I think it was a very tentative thought from the nix, they concluded it was unfeasible, so didn't go any further with it. Which only really strengthens the argument of those who say itd be nice but isn't really a feasible option, not yours.

It could be on port or railway land built adjacent to the existing stadium.

Which would then become a white elephant.

So, not likely to happen :-(

Build a 15k square stadium up on top of Mount Crawford - a stadium with a view! Parking might be a struggle but........ And you wouldn't want a Vinnie Lia stadium clearance kick.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

!00% this
Would be a great site for a mini stadium(see Google Earth). Would be the cheapest option. There is already terracing cut out on the embankments that just need to be concreted and seats added. Used to hold 8000+???. Could easily get it over 10K+ with a new eastern stand. Same distance from Courtney place as the ROF. Loads of parking. Easy walk up Taranaki st from the city. Only problem is the rugby heads have taken it over.

I agree with your statement but disagree with your example, I think NHS sucks as a stadium - it's too open and generates no atmosphere even when it's sold out.

Interesting article on how to build atmosphere into stadia here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22110898

Personally I think RoF has a great atmosphere when full, but the problem is that it's just too big for 95% of the games played there (ABs tests are the exception). I know there's no chance we'll get a smaller stadium because it just costs far too much. But having a chat about it as a hypothetical is fine. If people have a problem with that they can just not come on this thread.

To go back to something I've said a few times in the past - atmosphere is largely why people go to live sports  and the Nix undeniably  have a better level of crowd engagement and therefore atmosphere than any other professional sports team in the country (except maybe the Breakers but they play indoor so not comparable). Also, the more people at the game = the better the atmosphere. So why not lower prices, bring more people in, get a better atmosphere, and bring more people in again. If ticket prices were halved and attendance doubled then we'd have an almost half-full stadium every game for the same income (I know that's overly simplistic to say half price leads to twice the crowd but just for arguments sake). Bigger crowds means more merchandise sales, greater bargaining with sponsors, and so on.

Also, instead of building a new stadium can we at least start with improving the service at our existing stadium. Let's improve the concourse, get decent food and beer available, drop parking prices, and generally make the whole stadium experience less of a sh*tfest?

Obviously don't know what the agreement the nix has with the Stadium and Council but Gold Coast United put a cap of 5,000 supporters because that was a magic number, go over that and you have to hire more security, provide transport, etc. So it was cheaper to sell less than 5000 tickets than more.

It would go along way if we replaced the Yellow seats with something that is not so obviously empty. I always thought that if I ever bothered going to the Sevens again I would go as a yellow seat, just to fit in.

The old innovation - pragmatic disconnect at work here.

Interesting that the Muldoon govt (mostly evil) initiated the Think Big projects - which turned out to be not particularly helpful due to drop in oil prices in the 1980s.  However the basic premise was good (diversify the economy and build infrastucture).

why don't you build it then! *slams door and listens to Fall Out Boy in bedroom*

OK, I will...

It is surprisingly quite expensive to replace the seats (1-2 thousand seats every sevens) so I don't think anyone is in a hurry to change them just so you can feel better about being out-numbered by them.

Why not just double the size of the seats at Westpac?

Not only do you get cool new comfy seats it drops the capacity from 35,000 to about 17,000, which is what everyone wants.

You won't get a Council financing a new stadium, not when they already own the biggest and brightest in town. The only way to get it done would be by private interests that would combine it with an hotel, events centre, conference centre, shopping mall etc to generate income 24/7 rather than just for a few times a year. What is likely to happen in that scenario though is that Westpac would then drop their rental prices and there would be a price war. Market forces at work I suppose but if you were an investor you'd have to be pretty confident you would win that battle. The only way you fill a Westpac is with the ABs, The Lions or Phoenix being really successful and attracting sell outs, the odd concert and cricket 20/20. Almost everything else can be accommodated quite nicely in a 15,000 or less size stadium. Reduced running costs, better atmosphere, make it rectangular and don't cater for cricket - perfect.

On the subject of Flares.....I watched the PSG vs Olympic Marseille game last Sunday and there were some really cool parachute flares thrown......they floated gracefully onto the field under a little white parachute.

What was interesting was the reaction. Unlike this part of the world it was a non event. The world never ended, the sky did not fall, they did not interview the police chief on national TV afterwards, they did not have the mayor saying how terrible it was, they did not interview pointed headed academics who decried it as a sign of the end of western civilisation. No, some guy came on to the field with a bucket and took it away and the game continued.

I love Latin countries!!!!!!

Looks like the redevelopment has already started and some of the stages have already been completed according to the stadiums annual report (http://westpacstadium.co.nz/assets/Documents/WRST-AR13.pdf). Also have been reading elsewhere and the redevelopment is funded internally and no funding is coming from ratepayers!

It's a good read - this one outlines the improvements both inside and out...
