Fire it up indeed on game day!

Great to finally get the season started again. Excited and a little nervous about it!!

On the plus side we have Ernie. I have complete confidence in him as a coach. He has been there done that. The new style should be easier on the eye. If anyone can get the maximum out of this squad it will be Mr Merrick.

The negatives

1,The lack of experianced depth in the squad. If we can keep our first team on the park we should do OK.

2,Does Ernie have the bits he needs to make his style work. Has he been able to transform the Lia/Muscat combo into Gerrard/Lampard,  Because if he hasn't then you can have all the fancy attackers in the world, if they don't get regular quality ball they won't function. The plan won't work if Lia/Muscat get pressured and start wellying balls all over the show.

3, Defense. Can our experianced defenders refind their mojo's. Can the youngsters step up on "D"?

Finally, when the Nix first started up I thought great....an outlet for young kiwi talent. For various reasons it never realy happened how I thought. Now we have a squad chock full of young kiwis....some of them are going to be very good players. Exciting times

COYN!!!!!!!!

Good post. Feel the same. Really nervous about 2. But won't be judging the change for 4 or 5 games. Just hope we get a few points before we hit our straps, which I have no doubt we will.

Bloody hell! lots of players unavailable plus a few possibly playing with injuries. Doesnt sound promising but looking forward to see Kenny lighting up the league

If Ernie signs Riera, will he throw him straight into the game on sunday? Or will he start with the likely pairing of Lia and Manny? If Riera was to take anyone's place I imagine it would be Lia as they are somewhat similar players. Probably need Manny in there to break up the play and a guy like Riera to distribute the ball.

That is if he is to be signed...

I hate seeing our guys against Broich, it's painful. Our overly direct and last ditch defensive methods give him the perfect excuse to take a spill every time. Plenty of this on Sunday I bet

I'm picking that Ernie will stick with Lia and Muscat to start. They've been with him all pre-season and he's been showing a lot of faith in them to do the job (certainly in what he's been saying in the media).
Would like to have Riera on the bench and get a few minutes though. If we are going to sign him that is. Otherwise it would be a bit stink to play him for 20 minutes and then make him sit out for however long for ACFC.

To be fair though, he hasn't said anything bad about anybody.

Well he's hardly gonna come out to the media and say that so and so is shit.
He's cut people which shows his opinion certain players, Lindsay and Totori in particular.

What I mean is he's the type of player who will skip past you and go down because you touched him with your pinky finger. But because you didn't technically get the ball it's a foul. You need to be switched on for a full 90 when you're defending against this guy, and we very rarely are.

Picking he plays Muscat and Lia, and probably has had that in mind for this first game for a while. Am not expecting any points.

Fingers crossed both the German & the Bulgarian pull calf muscles inside the first 5 mins. Everyone pray! As for the Nix. I really have no idea on what to judge right now as this is where it counts. Not some friendly kick about. Time for the men to man up and the fans to fan up.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I have not seen VPL but NSW is better than QSL having seen both of those.

I've seen quite a few NSW Prem games and I'd say ACFC and the Waitakerie of last year would compete - but none of the other ASB teams would get near.

Even Manny can knock them in long pretty well.

You had a spelling mistake in there....you said Leo can take a decent free kick...

Deflection? Or did he trip on the ball?

It looks like Ifill is still having hammy problems but will start. A bit of a worry because if he plays wide right we are going to need him to give some defensive cover to Gulley at RB. The last thing Gulley needs on debut is a 34 yo with a dodgy hamstring defending in front of him. Especially as the Roar tend to attack down the wide chanels. Also Kenny has a groin strain, hence the short spell last weekend....so Im' not sure how mobile he will be. Carlos has a thigh strain and is not meant to be taking free kicks....so is anyone fit?

Ferk me the way we are going we won't have numbers for the bench. Don't expect Iffill, Carlos or Kenny to last the full 90. Considering we will have absent AW's we well could have all the kids on the park by the end of the match. The plus side is they have all been well drilled on Ernies style over a long preseason and they should all be fired up. But the Roar are a quality side with some very very good players. I would be happy with a point out of this one

Thundersticks may as well run a competition amongst fans for a spot on the Phoenix bench.

You try selling a wooden spoon winning team in Gosford midfielder and I guarantee you wouldn't get 6500 particularly when they don't play again in Wellington for two months after this game.
