Bizarre subs tonight. (why was A-rod playing wide right?)
Wee-mac was good the first half, disappeared completely in the second half.

Roly continues to prove he is an amazing player.

Lia frustrated me completely. Does some amazing good work, then nek minute wastes all his hard work by screwing up a simplish pass.

We look good in transition, but very lost in the front third. Newy crammed the box with numbers and we couldnt deal with it.

Moss did nothing really all game, he will be really disappointed with that second goal.

Next week start Sarpong, and bring on Apiah to run at tiring defenders

I thought Lia was pretty good actually; though I don't expect him to start when A-Rod is fit again. The problem for me was the crosses from wide to our midgets in the middle/poor defending/WeeMac slowing play down far too often/Powell offering nothing up front.

I was a bit worried going into this season, purely because of our lack of CB cover - unfortunately that cost us in the last 65 minutes. If Dura is out for an extended period, lets hope this Fox fella turns out to be good.

I also don't think Ernie trusts Sarpong to be the man to take over Burns just yet. He needs more game time, and I think he needed a longer pre season with us. From what i've seen, I'm unconvinced he will be any better than Kenny C. But time will tell.

Give Sarpong a bit more time he got himslf into some good positions and it was our inability or refusal to give him the ball early and at his feet as he was requesting it..

His touch was appalling when he did get it.

Yes because when they did give it he had invariably been closed  down by 1 or 2.There were 2 clear times at least where he got in perfect position but got nothing.Just think its far to early to make a call on him yet.

We did have some breaks but like we have done for ages there seems this need to hold it up and play it back instead of pushing on.Longest off season around and we still look like we have done buggar all on set piece play  Siggys header aside.

Yep, sack Greenie.

Louis had some good assists last season iirc, but this time seemed to be on instructions never to run to the by-line. Doyle put the ball in a lot less than he could have. Can't recall any successful passes in behind the defence.

Long season ahead if we can't beat rubbish like that at home.

No back up centre halves in the whole squad? Ridiculous to be honest.

Lack of creativity is a real worry and how Lia still starts truly beggars belief.

Our team proved that they have regressed during the off season and we got beaten by a bang average Jets who had 10 men for the last 15 mins.

Yes we have seen this too often. According to the stats, 62.6% possession, 6 shots on target vs 3 by New Castle, we lose 2-1. Mmmm, I think its going to be a very long season based on this one game. Thank God I am a Wolves support, I am so used to this. :-).

We were good for long spells last season, but ultimately we blew a great chance to do a whole lot better than we eventually did.

Might as well be to the point

- mostly crap I'm afraid

- croud was diabolical, but that performance aint gonna bring them in

- dreadful penalty (again) and set pieces generally weren't any more inspiring

- too tight through the crouded middle and too predictable for the opposition

- very little imagination when it came down to it. Incredibly disappointing.

- Don't need Lia and Riera when we are at home, not if we are trying to attack and win

- Did anyone have a good game? All much of a muchness to me, uninspiring team performance in a horrible looking system.

Let see some of the clubs that side of the ditch try a 7.00 pm kick off on a Sunday doubt the results would be stunning.

Some quick observations:

We played better than I actually thought we would. It wasn't great, but good enough to win games in this league. To get nothing is very disappointing.

Roly was by far the best player on the pitch, no-one is even in the same galaxy as him. Shame that Riera isn't younger, but still the two of them are the best players we have right now. I was critical of McGlinchey last season, he was woeful tonight and should have been dragged after 60. After tonight, I'd be tempted to keep him on the bench next week. Our backline will get us into lot of trouble this season. Could be a long one if we don't turn out to have a good goal-scorer in the squad.

Newcastle are dreadful, clear favourites for the wooden spoon this season. Had two chances in the whole game, and basically just parked  big bus, and got the three points. But it won't work out like that every week. Oh, and their left back was laughably bad.

KO time was awful, but unless we beat Perth, I doubt we'll get many more for the Brisbane game. We'll then then proceed to say everyone was away for labour weekend etc.

Relax guys... First game of the season. Everyone knows the Nix don't "do" penalties, corners, score from crosses.

The other teams figured us out in Feb last year... They now dont get players drawn out wide and basically stay deep and cram the box so we can't get in behind. This means we revert to crossing with midgets in the middle.

Ernie will have prepared for this - it's called being more direct earlier in transition. Don't let the opposition have time to regather shape. This means Wee Mac not turning in circles constantly allowing players to get back etc.

It needs our midfielders to get their heads up. While many criticise Lia he has the best vision in the team and will suit this style. Wee Mac does not- he would need to be benched for Appiah or someone with pace to start our wide and get in behind early.

Ernie cleat didn't want to show his hand today... Maybe like Hansen. Too early :-)

We created a lot of chances.

Newcastle's brick wall and cynical play wasn't the best opening challenge for our attacking third and the defensive blunders gifted them leads and allowed them to play that way.  But we've also turned Ernie's desire for patience in front of goal into some pretty unimaginative and overly slow play.

I think there is some reasonable chance the not a strikers and midfield will gel and we'll score enough goals.

The problem at the back looks harder to fix with Dura down so early.

Is 63% our best ever game possession stat?

Burns bailed us out of a lot of situations like this last time around. Not sure at this stage who is going to do it this time around. However, first game last season was also a bit piss poor, so early to rush to judgement

We played shark tonight, but glad we are not the Jets, they play the worst football in the league, at least we have the potential to improve.

Controlled the mid field but still looked weak in the front third and caught out by two sucker punches at the back. A continuation of the end of last season. I hope it is just a case of first game wobbles other wise a long and frustrating season is in store.

This

I think this might be a very accurate summary of our upcoming season.

First off.....A few  seasons ago we shipped 50+ goals and I think we did it two seasons in a row????. The same guys are still there.....and they are a couple of years older and slower. I think we will ship goals at quite a rate....not enough to be a disaster but enough to stop us picking up regular points against good sides.

Ernie needs to have a rethink about the slow deliberate buildup. How often do lesser sides pick up points against us by packing the central defensive areas and choking our attacks? We don't have a Messi to unlock tight defenses. We do have quick nimble players who could succesfully play a counter attacking game. If we moved the ball quicker into scoring zones before defenses had time to set then we might increase our scoring rate.

Its hard to judge a season on one game but there seemed to be a fair bit of deja vu watching this game. Crap side arrives, parks the bus, we can't score, we let them score, we lose points. Seems like the Nix blueprint. I'm sure Ernie will get the attack firing and we will win games but the defense is a big worry for me!!!!

We should make top half of the table but I can't see us troubling the big boys

In some ways this is a pivotal year for the Nix. I think its Welnix's 5th year??? They always said they would do five and then review their participation. Plus the relicense is still up in the air. Small crouds and another ho hum season are not going to enthuse anyone....especially guys who regularly put their hands in their pockets to keep the whole thing afloat.

Who knows, the Nix might have a storming season and go right to the final. That would help ensure the club would be around for many more years.....here's hoping.

My biggest disappointment (after not winning) last night was the yellow fever. As twelth man they were woeful. My tiny group tried to get things going and some of them gave us the finger. I assume they were taking thier frustration about the game out on us. Part of my disappointmment was that at the home show game they trialled a bunch of new chants that didn't even come out last night. I hope they "bring it" next home game

Right, a classic post-match angst-fest to join in on then...

For me, the two biggest concerns coming out of that game were things which have been concerns for a while: one, the lack of a backup CB, and two, our inability to break down teams who defend deep and narrow.

The first issue has been obvious since the moment Boxall left. Although you don't expect to lose a CB inside the first half hour of the season it was madness to never have specialist cover there. Already you could argue it's cost us 3 points. I just don't understand why Ernie didn't sign a backup CB. I just don't get it. Why?

The second issue has been obvious since about the middle of last season. We signed Griffiths partly to combat it I think. Last night, we had no width, but we also had no striker playing centrally. Our fullbacks weren't hugging the line on attack, in fact Fenton in particular kept trying to cut in field every time he was one-on-one with the Jets FB. Then he'd end up passing back into the croud centrally and running into the same zone that Krishna or Powell was already occupying around the corner of the 18yd box. The middle of the park was horribly congested when we had possession. But without a striker who poses at least a bit of an aerial threat we don't cross so we're left with trying to play into a massive croud every time (Krishna did get a header on target of course but a bigger striker would have been able to get over the ball more and hopefully make it harder for the keeper).

Maybe another way to do it would be to get to the byline and cut back - and that's how we scored - but then we never seemed to really try that again. Flat low crosses in the gap behind keeper and defence might also work but there wasn't much gap there and our not-a-strikers never seem to make the runs they need to for that kind of ball to work. Instead the vast majority of our attacks involved a slow passing move out to the full back and then back in again, when we'd then just get caught with the ball at our feet while we looked for options, or try to pass through about 3 guys at once.

Again, none of this is new. These issues were there at the end of last season. Why haven't they been addressed? Does Ernie like the not-a-striker gag and doesn't want it to stop? Does he really think that Manny is a solid option at CB?

Overall, I know people will say that this is just the first game and don't read too much into it. And that's true to a point, but after last season and the massively long off season we haven't even managed to address 2 obvious problems before the first game of this season. Definitely not a promising start.

Other random thoughts:

- Either a bunch of our guys put on a few pounds over winter or the spikey makes players look fatter than the stripey does

- Sarpong was underwhelming, but I'm willing to give him a few weeks to find his feet.

- I haven't seen a replay of Krishna's penalty attempt, I only saw it live at the ground, but I didn't think it was too bad - at least he got it low and on target. Maybe I'm expecting so little from Nix penalties now though.

- Man that ref sucked.

- The possession stats are meaningless. Newcastle never tried to hold possession and were willing to let us keep it all we liked. We can't claim some sort of moral victory just because we touched the ball more often.

Not sure where in the zone you were but some of the new chants were tried but very hard to get them going if people dont know them.As has been the case for a few seasons many come into the zone for a game but just wont participate, instead of complaining help the guys out with some ideas on how to make it better..

Back up CB signing today allegedly btw

As for Krishna, he's now known as low and into the corner IMO. Needs to be able to send the keeper the wrong way if he's going to do that every time.
